On Thursday October 6, 2011, the Gamma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho hosted their Royal Court Coronation. A recent initiate into the chapter was interview to find out the inner workings of the coronation. What was the theme of your coronation? Toni Hagans-Greene: The theme was breast cancer awareness. We plan to wear pink every Wednesday in October to promote breast cancer awareness. What are the different court titles you have? T H-G: In the Gamma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, we have a Mr. 1922, Mr. Blue, Mr. Gold, and a Mr. and Mrs. Sigma Gamma Rho. How did you go about finding your Mr. Sigma Gamma Rho? T H-G: We held a pageant on Friday, Sept. 30. The contestants had to go through various portions of the show such as exercising, talent, Q&A and casual wear. The contestant with the highest score is crowned Mr. Sigma Gamma Rho for the 2011-2012 year. What else happens at coronation?

T H-G: The court is presented with gifts from various organizations and is allowed to give thanks. This is also an opportunity for them to introduce the programs they are planning to implement during the school year. The chapter also presents gifts to individuals they feel have helped tremendously. What kind of programs does the court plan to do? T H-G: One of the programs we plan to do is providing awareness for sickle cell anemia. We plan to help people get screened for it in partnership with Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency across from N.C. A&T State University. What is the first way you will promote breast cancer awareness? T H-G: Well at the coronation, we placed pink table cloths on the tables and asked everyone in attendance to write a special message so that we could send the table cloths to those who are affected by breast cancer.
