Weather 101 Best Season to Ride

Fall is my favorite time of year. I would venture to say most of you bikers enjoy getting out on the open road this time of year as well. This is the season we get a bit cooler in the morning and then rapidly warm up into the 70s and 80s by the afternoon. That early morning chill we get typically happens when many of you are likely rolling out of bed sunrise! This is perhaps the time you want wait getting on that bike. Do you know why our temperatures are typically lowest around sunrise? During the day, energy arriving from the sun exceeds energy that the Earth radiates back

radiation from the sun (sunlight) and the terrestrial radiation given off by the earths surface (felt as heat.) When the sun goes down, the incoming radiation from the sun stops, but there is still a lot of radiation that has been absorbed by the earth, so we still feel heat near the earth even after the sun goes down. At night, the loss of terrestrial radiation continues, and the ground and the air near it cools Earths surface is typically in radiation debt from a couple of hours before sunset to near sunrise. When the sun comes up and the increase of incoming radiation from the sun equalize with the loss of radiation from earth, we get the coolest temperature of the day. Sometimes in winter when the sun is low in the sky, the earths surface can remain in radiation debt longer, and the coldest temperature of the day can actually occur as much as an hour after sunrise. As the sun gets higher in the sky, earths surface is in radiation surplus, so the ground and the air near it warm.

into space, so temperatures usually rise. At night, incoming solar energy drops off, but the Earth continues to radiate energy, so temperatures typically fall. Dawn comes after a full night in which the Earth has lost energy and received very little. Often the temperature does fall for a short time after sunrise, though it is only a degree or two at most. And even if the temperature doesnt fall as the sun is rising, the air may actually feel colder to you. Thats because we are used to it being colder when its dark and warmer when its light. So, as the sky begins to brighten in the morning and the temperature remains nearly the same, we might perceive that it is colder than it actually is. Also, wind generally increases during the day. The air sometimes begins to stir just after sunrise, and an increase in wind would make us feel colder. If there are no fronts or precipitation nearby, the daily temperature cycle is primarily controlled by the radiation budget. This is a comparison between the incoming

Las Cruces Toys for Kids Motorcycle Parade

November 20, 2011
Motorcyclists will gather and register at Mesilla Valley Mall beginning at 9:00 a.m

We all love our toys - adults and

kids alike. For the 31st year, Toys for Kids Motorcycle Parade is asking motorcyclists to ride their big toys loaded with toys to bring joy to kids throughout Dona Ana County. The parade will take place on November 20, 2011. Motorcyclists will gather and register at Mesilla Valley Mall beginning at 9:00 a.m. and registration at the Mall will remain open until 11:30. The parade will leave the mall at noon sharp.* To participate in the parade, motorcycles must be street legal, registered and insured. The parade will end at Dickersons Event Center where food, music, door prizes, vendors, a bike show and a grand prize drawing await. Music will be provided by Saturday Nite Special. If you dont have a motorcycle, join us at Dickersons anyway! A donation of $10 and a new toy valued at $7.00 or more per person gets you a meal and two beverages, plus the chance to win a door prize or the grand prize of a $500 gift certificate from Las Cruces Motorsports. The primary beneficiary of the Toys for Kids Motorcycle Parade is Tresco TOTS, the only non-profit early intervention agency in southern New Mexico. TOTS provides physical, occupational, speech and developmental therapy, among other services, to children from birth to three years of age who have, or are at risk for developmental delays. So, toys that encourage

the development of fine and gross motor skills, language, thinking, music, and creativity are great choices. Many other agencies in the area have received toys from the TFK Parade. Last year Dona Ana Health and Services Division hosted many parties throughout the county; many of the toys were donated from this event. Gospel Rescue Mission, La Pinon, Respite Care, Sensory Kids, and Jesses Bikes for Tykes also received toys in 2010. Coats for Kids, Prison Family Services, Mesilla Valley Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Santas Helper Program, Salvation Army, Mesquite Community Center, San Andres and Las Cruces High School GRADS Programs, FYI Girls and Boys Shelters, La Clinica de Familia Healthy Start, and Valley View Multiple Disabilities Parents Committee received cash donations to provide happier holidays for the children in their programs.

If youd like to donate toys but are unable to make it on November 20th, you can drop off toys at Tresco TOTS, 2325 E Nevada or Wheelsport, 105 Hanks Dr. in Mesilla Park.

*LCPD has approved the parade permit but the route has not yet been confirmed. Please check the website and watch for information in the Sun-News closer to the date of the event.

9 Steps to Winterize your Motorcycle or Dirtbike for Winter Storage

By: Ryan Seylhouwer

months. Proper preventative measure and maintenance ensure optimal engine health and function after storage. The most common issues arising from motorcycle storage are body and parts rust, fuel contamination, battery drain, and engine corrosion. This article will address the following issues: 1. Where to store your bike 2. How to cover your motorcycle(s) 3. Changing the oil 4. Preventing rust and other surface body defects 5. Disconnecting and storing the battery 6. Monitoring tire pressure 7. Preventing engine cylinder damage and corrosion 8. Using fuel stabilizer 9. Fluid change

heat. 2. It is important to choose the right material for covering your motorcycle. Sheets absorb moisture and hold it against your motorcycle causing rust. Tarps trap condensation by not allowing air exchange leading to rust. Another unfortunate problem with tarps is that they will often bond to your bike's body paint in the cold and ruin the paint job when removed. Specially designed motorcycle covers prevent moisture absorption and allow air exchange. 3. Changing your oil to a winter grade oil will ensure easy start up in the spring. Even if you are not due for an oil change it is a good idea to perform an oil change as combustion created acid byproducts in motor oil which can corrode your motors inner surfaces. What to do with used motor oil? Read disposing and recycling used motor oil 4. Waxing your motorcycle before storage will create a protective barrier against rust and moisture. A light spray of WD-40 on engine parts and the frame will protect your bike against corrosion. 5. Batteries should be disconnected and removed from the bike to prevent current drain. Dead batteries are the most common startup problem motorcycle enthusiasts face in spring. Charg-

ing your battery every few weeks will maintain its charge 6. Cold temperature inversely affects tire pressure; meaning that the colder it gets the more the air in your tire compresses, lowering your tire pressure which causes premature wear. Continually monitor your tire pressure and use a motorcycle paddock, lift, or stand to raise your bike's tires off the frigid garage floor. Examples of motorcycle lifts and stands 7. Lubing your engine's cylinder walls with engine oil will prevent corrosion and rust. Without lubricating your motorcycle's cylinders premature ring and piston wear is a very real possibility. 8. Gasoline breaks down overtime creating compounds that clogs the fuel system. Filling your tank with fresh gas, draining your fuel line and carburettors, and adding fuel stabilizer will prevent gasoline from decomposing and prevent moisture collection. 9. Brake fluids are water-absorbing, or hygroscopic, by nature. If you haven't changed your fluids in the past year or two chances are a good deal of moisture has been absorbed which can cause engine corrosion. Following these steps will prevent problems with starting your motorcycle after the winter months.

With winter months soon ahead

motorists are starting to prepare their motorcycles, choppers, dirt bikes, and ATV vehicles for winter storage. Following a few simple steps for winterizing your motorcycle will prevent your bike from seizing on ignition. Bikes and other motor vehicles should not only prepare their bikes for winter storage, but also for any non-riding period in excess of 1-2

1. Ideally your motorcycle or dirt bike should be stored in a temperature regulated environment with low humidity and away from UV light. Your local motorcycle dealer or bike shop may offer winterizing and storage service for a nominal fee. Most motorcycle enthusiasts will store their bike in their freezing garages which is why proper winter preparation and maintenance is necessary. Covering any windows in your garage will prevent temperature changes and condensation from the sun's radiant

How To Sell Your Motorcycle On eBay

ple photos. This gives you an opportunity to take some shots from various angles. Here are a few tips for taking photos of your bike. - Wash your bike thoroughly before you take the photographs. You don't want mud splatters to ruin your sale! - Take multiple photos from different angles. Straight on, angles and exterior shots should all be considered and included if possible. A sweet engine shot can often seal the deal. You may actually

selling that with the motorcycle, take a picture of it. This builds value and will help you to attain your asking price. If your model of motorcycle is a special edition, highlight that with your photographs. - Understand your light source and take your pictures in a well lit environment. Pictures of your bike at night, or covered in snow, leaves or mud will only cause buyers to think you have something to hide. Don't have the light source directly behind the motor-

Write an ad That Sells Your Bike Yes, a picture can say a thousand words, but great writing and selling copy can really help. A few enticing 'call to action' statements like 'priced to sell' or 'call now, before it's too late' can all work wonders. Here are some tips for how to write the best selling copy for your motorcycle: - Always list the basic features of the motorbike. Some bike details are essential and should always be included even if it is a detriment to the value, such as year, model, make, price and mileage. You may also want to mention if you are the original owner, and may want to list some details on the history and condition of the bike. - Use simple words and avoid jargon. Do not attempt to go into too great of detail when you are describing the motorcycle - you may come across as desperate to sell, meaning people will try to drive down the price. Even if you need to unload the bike as quickly as possible, don't mention that in the written description. If you are going to include accessories like a helmet, leathers or gloves make sure you include this in the description. It could tip the balance in favour of your your listing.

You are selling your bike. You,

like millions of others, are turning to the web to market your motorcycle. There are many different sites that can do this for you , whether it's eBay motors, Gumtree or Autotrader. It doesn't matter what site you use, the same rules apply when it comes to advertising your bike and this guide will take you through them. In no time you will be able to sell and organise motorbike delivery service to send your motorcycle to the buyer. Selling Your Bike Through a Photograph With an online motorbike advertisement, think of the main motorbike photo as the 'first impression'. Remember, you only have one shot! Most online sources for selling bikes allow you to take multi-

- Mention RELIABILITY. Is your bike faithful and reliable? Well if it is, shout it to anyone you will listen. Let buyers know if the bike has passed a safety or emissions test recently. With used bikes, reliability is often a deciding factor in buyers' choices. Offer reliable contact/personal information This may seem like a total nobrainer, but so often people use an email address that they never check or a mobile phone number where the phone is always off. How can you sell your bike if people can't get in touch with you? Make sure to list personal information where you can be reached immediately. If you are unable to respond immediately, state this early on and when you do get a

chance, respond asap. Buyers are always on the hunt for a good deal. If your bike meets their specifications and you are unreachable, they may move on to the next bike and you will have lost a customer! Practice the above tips when you are selling your bike and you will have the greatest chance of it selling. Once you have the sale lined up make sure you organise a courier to transport your bike if the buyer is not picking it up personally. About the Author Antonino Bruzzsa is a freelance writer creating quality content for many websites in various niches.

- BE HONEST! It is not uncommon for buyers to travel long distances to see the motorbike they want to buy in person. Always avoid misrepresenting both yourself and the bike you are selling. Everyone who buys a bike will want to see it in person, so exaggerating its condition is simply a waste of time. Be honest and fair, and you will get a fair price for the bike.

- Price your motorbike appropriately. Over pricing your bike is a sure fire way of alienating a large amount of potential buyers. Whatever you do, do not convey any desperation to sell your bike. Price will nearly always be the main attraction and a competitively priced motorbike will get snapped up quickly. Just don't price it too low - it may appear as though it is a scam.

How To Fix A Motorcycle - Some Basic Repair Tasks

standing what needs to be fixed in the first place. Proper diagnoses of the problem at hand is just as important as making the actual repair. You don't want to spend hours on something that you think is the issue only to find out that you have been wasting your time on an incorrect hunch. One thing that you can do to properly diagnose mechanical issues that might exist with your motorcycle is to consult the owner manual. Understanding How To Complete The Repair Task Repairing a motorcycle can be a difficult task if you're not exactly sure what you are doing. There are a number of resources both online and offline that can help you through the steps involved in making repairs. The owner manual is perhaps the most beneficial resource that a biker can have for performing maintenance and repair tasks because it contains information specific to your particular model. There are also a number of diagnostics tools that can help you identify specific problems that might exist in your motorcycle. These tools will help identify issues within the motorcycle electrical system, fuel system, emissions system, and more. Common Repairs That You Might Have To Make

Keeping up with routine motorcycle maintenance tasks is one way that you can avoid expensive repairs later on due to long term neglect. To put it simple, staying on top of these common motorcycle repairs can save you a bundle of money down the road. If you're not comfortable with making the repairs yourself, then it may be best to leave the repairs to a professional mechanic. Making mistakes due to a lack of knowledge can end up being more costly than paying a professional mechanic to complete the repairs the first time around.

Benefits Of Taking The Skills Test Only

Skills Exam Or A Safety Course?

By: Matt LeClair Are you ready to hit the road on your motorcycle and need to get a license in order to do so? There are a few pointers that you might want to consider when deciding if you are simply going to go straight for the skills test or take the safety course.

There are some benefits to going straight for the skills test in order to get your license. Perhaps the biggest advantage of doing so is the fact that you don't have to rely on the scheduling of a safety course, and you don't have to sit in a classroom for 16 hours or however long the course is scheduled to take. If you're not a big fan of classrooms, then this might be your best option.

free and friendly setting.

Both Required? If you opt to take the knowledge exam and skills test, you can schedule them at a time that works for you. You won't be at the mercy of a safety course schedule and in many cases can get your tests scheduled right away so you can get your license more quickly. If you're simply not comfortable with taking exams and being put on the spot in high pressure situations, then the safety course is definitely the way to go. Taking a skills test on your motorcycle in front of an instructor can be quite a nerve wracking experience, and many people have trouble performing well in this type of situation. The safety course will alleviate a lot of that stress and pressure and will help you get your motorcycle license in a stress

Benefits Of Taking A Safety Course

A motorcycle permit is most likely required and in some cases you might be required to do both the safety course as well as the skills test. If this is the case in your state, then of course you won't be able to choose between the two. Each state is different so check with your local motorcycle vehicle department to see what rules have been put in place.

As you can probably imagine both alternatives have their pros and cons, so choosing one over the other will be a decision that you

On the flip side there are benefits of taking a safety course for learning how to ride your motorcycle safely. During the course you will get a lot of hands on training as well as extra knowledge about

Remembering Javi
On January 18, Javi Giggity Thomas was hit and killed on his
sport bike by a car trying to beat a yellow light. The burden of the fatality fell on the driver of the car for failing to see and avoid Javi. Javi was in complete control over his bike. Javi was not speeding, nor riding recklessly nor under the influence. He was a member of the Sinland Bikers EP. Sinland hosted a car wash behind Fuddruckers on September 25 to raise money for Javis family. Sinland EP is a group consisting of local and military riders who share the common interest of riding sport motorcycles. In order to be a member, prospective riders have to fill out an application, provide their insurance and drivers license information (with a valid motorcycle certifica-

Sinland bikers also are required to participate in local community events like this car wash, toy runs and helping to sponsor the first grade soccer team (the Hurshel Antwine Cubs). Sinland would like to thank all those that came out to support their efforts to remember and support their fallen brother. Javi is remembered as a down to earth guy who would go out of his way to help out people.

The Harley-Davidson is a powerful bike which is still highly popular, even in todays moviemaking ventures, such as the more recent movie, Hogs.. achieving freedom. According to Wikipedia, this landmark counterculture film becomes a touchstone for a generation that captured the national imagination, Easy Rider explores the societal landscapes, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of the hippie movement, drug use and communal lifestyle.

From the so-called Hogs

ridden by motorcycle gangs such as the Hells Angels, to the putt-putt motor scooters ridden by little ole ladies, the motorcycle has always had a romantic air of freedom about it. In El Paso, with its wide open spaces and scenic drives, it becomes even more of an icon that is beloved by doctors, politicians, and ordinary people who enjoy having a powerful machine between their legs, cruising back streets and mountainous country.

the modern bicycle collided. Motorcycles have figured prominently in Americana, with prominent Americans like Howard Hughes producing a movie called Chills and Spills, a 1952 film in which Hughes creates what is described as a fun film, jampacked with awesome vintage cycles. Other iconic motorcycle films include one of Marlon Brandos earliest films, The Wild Ones, in which Brando and his motorcycle gang terrorize a small town when Brando, the biker is asked what hes rebelling against, he asks: What you got?

But, perhaps the bikes which still stand out in American folklore are the ones used in the movie Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson. The protagonists, Fonda and Hopper, used bikes built on hardtail frames and panhead engines. These bikes, built in 1949, 1950 and 1952, known as Glide Bikes, were purchased at auction by the actors. They used the bikes to tell the story of two bikers who travel through the American Southwest and South with the aim of

Easy Rider is famous for its use of real drugs in its portrayal of marijuana and other substances, such as Acid or LSD. But, whatever the motorcycles are used for, theres no doubt that they have captured the imagination of an American public that is only too willing to buy vintage motorcycles, or the more modern versions. Either way, motorcycles, with their powerful, vibrating engines, are here to stay.

From its inception in1867, when Sylvester Howard Roper (1823-1896) invented a twocylinder, steam engine motorcycle (powered by coal) the first motorcycle has seen an evolution of sorts. In 1885, Gottlieb Daimier invented the first gas-engine motorcycle, which was an engine attached to a wooden bike. That marked the moment in history when the dual development of a viable gas powered engine and
