NORTH : PARK HUB + PLAYGROUND

1. Our concept
Our proposed new landscape takes the form of a series of longitudinal strips that reference the character of the river valley, its horticultural past and the inuence of human order imposed upon the ground (canals, railways, agriculture and industry). We aim to recreate a dry river landscape for play and adventure, in a setting of native trees, meadows and foodproducing species. The Hub Building is a gateway into the Queen Elizabeth Park at the crossing of the existing east-west and north-south routes. Set within an undulating, linear landscape of owing contours and shifting ground planes, lines of found structure (arcades) dene the framework for both the building and the play elements.

2. North hub
Located at the cross-routes through the Queen Elizabeth Park, the Hub building is the focal point of a parkland journey. A generous forecourt opens to the south, presided over by a light beacon. Occupying the spaces between the structural arcades, the building is a proposal of beauty and quality: timeless yet aesthetically resonant. We aim to make this a place the community will love.

Off site manufacture - Detailed info prepared and issued for prefabrication of steel frame, pre-cast concrete panels, cladding, windows, doors and stairs to be delivered to site. Surveys - Ground conditions and survey info reviewed to determine foundations required. Small driven or screw type piles will be used if necessary to avoid the need to remove contaminated soil beneath the existing membrane from site. Landscaping - Trees grown off site in preparation for planting on site

3. Structure and fabric

The building will use off-site fabrication (steel frame & the precast concrete cladding elements) to minimise site waste, improve nishes and save time during the contract. The scheme reduces the use of energy and water, and makes use of microclimate and solar orientation to capitalise on the free benets of the ambient environment, improving efciency and reducing operating costs.
glazed stair core solar chimney which drives the stack effect for natural ventilation through out the building Green/brown roof reduces surface water run off and increases biodiversity, brown roofs provide means to utilise suitable site spoil Solar PV panels on roof provide power to external LED lights to beacon high level opening windows allow simple cross ventilation metal & concrete composite deck roof throughout enables quick construction & reduces solar gain heavy weight timber fins to soffits provide thermal mass to eliminate overheating and aid acoustic absorption precast concrete wall cladding: high recycled aggregate content provide thermal mass internally manufactured off site to reduce construction time provide a robust, long lasting finish direct access to plant room from outside allows metering and services to be accessed at all times All spaces provided with underfloor heating supplied from central CHP plant shallow foundations with driven or screw piles omitting need to excavate below no-dig layer. (dependent on ground conditions)

Site set up - workers welfare facilities, site ofce, wcs, safety hoardings etc. Temporary site cabins positioned on hard standing to south of building to allow construction of playground to north. Foundations and slab - piling, excavation and casting of ground beams. distribution of top soil across site to form landscape mounds. Slab either cast in situ or pre-fab beam and block construction. Landscaping - hardy plants, bulbs and grasses planted/sown to allow growth prior to completion and blooms in spring Structure - Steel frame superstructure delivered and installed with steel frame superstructure. All bolted connections to ensure fast track construction with no site welding. Lateral stability is provided by steel portal frames in the east-west direction and by steel braced frames in the north-south direction. Roof - formed using metal decking with a concrete topping, which enables quick construction on site and also provides inplane shear stiffness as part of the stability system. Roof provides weather proof canopy for works to commence internally (M+E rst x and framing out)

space and community building that not only creates a destination like the dunes or rock pools by the sea but provides a new legacy related to the Lea valley (past and present). The communities of the ve host boroughs will be brought together in a park that unies and connects people of all age groups and backgrounds. Visitors and local residents will enjoy a play landscape that is accessible, imaginative, fun, creative and inclusive for all.
