Can you tell the difference between a cold and the flu?
NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
You may have warm memories of staying home sick as a child: your mother making tea and caring for you while you stayed in bed for days. For your health, however, its best to put those cherished memories to bed. The flu is far more serious than a cold. It doesnt matter how much chicken soup you eat, soup wont treat the flu. Linda Davis-Alldritt, president of the National Association of School Nurses, explains how to recognize flu symptoms and prevent and treat the virus. Can you tell the difference between cold and flu? According to a survey, one in four Americans have trouble telling the difference between the two. Thats a major problem when it comes to the flu. You need to know its not just a cold or allergies, said Davis-Alldritt. There is a great memory tool that everyone should learn to help them remember the specific symptoms of the flu. Think flu facts:

F.A.C.T.S. stands for fever, aches, chills, tiredness and sudden onset. How do you fight the flu? The flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against
flu viruses. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine. However, last year a substantial percent of Americans
did not get a flu vaccine (57 percent). This leaves most people unprotected against the flu virus. If you have flu symptoms such as a high fever and aches, its important to see your doctor quickly, Davis-Alldritt explains. There are prescription medicines that directly target the flu virus that might be able to help you. Unlike a cold, there are prescription medicines for flu, so it is important to see your doctor at the first sign of flu symptoms. If you catch the flu, what should you do? If you do get sick with the flu, there are simple ways to stop the spread of germs. First, know that you are contagious, so avoid that hug or handshake. Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. The virus can travel up to six feet every time a person with flu sneezes or coughs, so be sure to cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue. Of course, visit your doctor quickly to see if its the flu, Davis-Alldritt added.

My friend Richard Sutphen tells an interesting story about his experience as a participant in a Divine Matrix seminar conducted by quantum physicist and author Gregg Braden. Much of Greggs work relates to his long search through ancient culture, their writings and sacred texts for a more effective form of prayer. Gregg says that classic method of many of our prayersasking God for what we wantactually cancels out our request. We often begin a prayer by acknowledging we do not have what we want. Heres an excerpt from Greggs book, Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer. He describes accompanying a friend on a hike through the New Mexico high desert. During a time of drought, his friend David wanted to pray for rain within a medicine wheel. I wasnt prepared for what I saw next. I watched carefully as David removed his shoes, gently placed his naked feet into the circle, and honored the four directions and all of his ancestors. Slowly, he placed his hands in front of his face in a praying position, closed his eyes and became motionless. Oblivious to the heat of the midday desert sun, his breathing slowed and became barely noticeable. After only a few moments, he took a deep breath, opened his eyes to look at me, and said, Lets go. Our work is nished here. Expecting to see dancing, or at least some chanting, I was surprised by how quickly this prayer began and then ended. Already? I asked. I thought you were going to pray for rain! Davids reply to my question has been the key that has helped so many to understand this kind of prayer. As he sat on the ground to lace up his shoes, David looked up at me and smiled. No, he replied. I said that I would pray rain. If I have prayed for rain, it would never happen. Gregg asked, If you didnt pray for rain, then what did you do? Its simple, he replied. I began to have the feeling of what rain feels like. I felt the feeling of rain on my body, and what it feels like to stand with my naked feet in the mud in our village plaza because there has been so much rain. I smelled the smells of rain on the earthen walls in our village, and felt what it feels like to walk through elds of corn chest high because there has been so much rain. David had used his thoughts, feelings and emotions to perceive what he desired as an already accomplished fact. Although Gregg does not go into it in the book, in the seminar he said the following day it started to rain and did not stop until after the rain itself had become a problem. In another segment of the seminar , Gregg showed a video of a woman with inoperable cancer being healed at a medical clinic in mainland China. A female technician used an ultra-sound monitor allowing us to see what was happening within the patients body as three doctors chanted something to the effect of the healing being ALREADY DONE. Within 2 1/2 minutes the cancer disappeared. The success rate of such healings is over 90 percent if the patient is willing to establish new patterns of thinking, diet and exercise. For many years I have taught people to pray the solution, not the problem. This story from Gregg Braden illustrates how to do that. I thought it was worthwhile to pass along. We can learn to pray health, not for health or the removal of the disease. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

This very sweet Retriever mix girl would like to go to a good forever home. She was picked up as a stray and taken to the shelter and is ready to go now! Even though she was a stray someone has spent a lot of time with her, she understands basic commands and can sit and shake! Sweetie was found on October 12th with an old rope collar. She weighs about 50 pounds and has a beautiful red coat. She loves being with people and seems to get along with other dogs and kids. Sweetie will make a wonderful family pet! Come and meet her, you will like her! (ID# 11/10/24)
