Social Entrepreneur and President of Organization for Young Americans Represents Millennial Generation in CBS Evening News Town Hall
Matthew Segal Joins Panel of National Thought Leaders to Present Solutions to Countrys Toughest Economic Challenges
WASHINGTON, D.C. Last night on CBS Evening News, Matthew Segal, President and co-founder of OURTIME.org a national non-profit organization standing up for Americans under 30 joined a panel of seven of the countrys top political, social and business leaders to discuss solutions to the current state of the economy. Part one of a three-part town hall series aired last night, moderated by Evening News anchor Scott Pelley as he sought answers to Americas economic issues. View Pelleys account of the panel, CEO: Tough Sentences Would Keep Execs in Line, here. Part two aired during todays Early Show, and the finale airs on CBS Evening News tonight. OURTIME.org recognizes the urgent need for immediate solutions to the jobs crisis particularly among young Americans, who are struggling at record levels and seeing little effort from Washington. I was appreciative and inspired by what I heard from leaders across so many diverse backgrounds during the town hall, says Segal. We need to continue to look to our business, education and cultural leaders who value working towards creating an environment in this country that fosters the necessary confidence that leads to job creation. Joining Matthew on the panel are Mary Frances Berry, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and former Chairperson of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; Mick Cornett, Mayor of Oklahoma City and President of the Republican Mayors Association; Michelle Rhee, CEO of StudentsFirst and former Chancellor of the Washington, D.C. public school system; John Bogle, founder of the world's largest mutual fund company, the Vanguard Group; Arturo Vargas, the Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials; Eileen McDonnell, President and CEO of Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company; and Dr. Pedro Jose "Joe" Greer, Jr., Assistant Dean of Medicine at Florida International University. Special interests. It's completely special interests, Segal replied in response to Pelleys

town hall question of why compromise and progress have hit a wall in Washington. It's a fundraising game. So, [politicians] know that if they can go to certain industries and always be loyal to that industry, they're always going to win their re-election. And I think that demonstrates they only have to be accountable to the people financing them.

Over the past few months, OURTIME.org has been outspoken on Americas economic issues: demanding universities immediately cease the practice of allowing Wall Street recruiters preferred access to students in exchange for financial contribution with a Say No To Wall Street petition; polling its members on their support of the Buffett Rule, supporting the boycott of political contributions with Starbucks CEO Howard Schultzs Upward Spiral Campaign; and launching a petition in August entitled Vacations Over! calling on Congress to CANCEL their vacation, head back to Washington, and get to work on behalf of their constituents. OURTIME.org is a national organization founded and run by young Americans, leveraging pop culture, business partnerships, and online organizing to drive civic engagement through economic empowerment.
