Estes Park Trail-Gazette Estes Park’s Complete Home Guide 17 November-December 2011...
Fill your backyard with birdsong this winter
Special to the Trail-Gazette
(ARA) — Shorter days,
dropping temperatures and
dealing with snow and ice
can give many people a seri-
ous case of the winter dol-
drums. Most of us won’t be
able to fight winter blues
with a tropical getaway or a
spa weekend. But there is an
easy, convenient way to give
yourself an emotional boost
during the winter, and do
something good for nature at
the same time: feed wild
More than 65 million
Americans have tried bird
feeding, according to a re-
cent Census Report. Bird
feeding is an easy and enjoy-
able hobby for people of any
age, ability and skill level.
Whether you’re new to bird
feeding or a seasoned pro,
here are some tips to help
you enjoy a successful, mu-
tually beneficial relationship
with your backyard birds
this winter:
Figuring out feeders
The type of feeder you use
is important. To attract the
greatest number of species,
you’ll need to provide differ-
ent types of feeders and feed
choices. Hopper and plat-
form designs are always pop-
ular, but whatever feeders
you use during winter
should have a few features in
* A wide cover over feed-
ing ports, perches and dis-
pensing trays will help pre-
vent feed from being buried
by snowfall. The cover
should extend several inches
over the feeder edge to en-
sure protection from all but
the worst storms.
* Place feeders in shel-
tered locations out of severe
winds. Placing feeders close
to the house, or using win-
dow feeders, both offers the
birds more shelter and gets
them closer for great view-
ing. You can also place feed-
ers near protective cover like
* Bigger is better for win-
ter feeding. Large capacity
feeders mean you’ll have to
brave winter weather less
frequently to refill them.
Keep ‘em clean
Birds appreciate cleanli-
ness when it comes to their
feeders. Because natural
food sources are scarce in
winter, your feeders will at-
tract hungry birds. It’s im-
portant to clean them regu-
larly to keep them free of
mold, mildew and other un-
healthy conditions that could
foster disease.
with benefits
Here’s some steps to
make your backyard even
more beneficial to birds:
* Consider adding a
heated bird bath. Birds have
difficulty finding fresh water
in the winter.
* Leave bird houses and
nesting boxes in place
through winter to act as shel-
ter for roosting birds.
* Choose bird-friendly
landscaping that includes
sheltering evergreen plants,
and plants that provide fruit
for a natural winter food
Give birds a boost
with food high in fat,
nutrition and energy
With insects and fruit
harder to find naturally dur-
ing winter months, most
birds will thrive on seeds.
Suet, solid fat rendered from
beef, venison or vegetables,
is also good for birds, and
provides much needed con-
centrated energy. Serving
suet used to be a messy af-
fair, but bird feed producers
like Cole’s Wild Bird Prod-
ucts have made the task
much easier for the server
and even more beneficial for
birds. Cole’s offers several
mess-free ways to serve suet:
* Suet Kibbles are high
potency and offer birds the
berry flavors they love.
Cole’s formulation also incor-
porates dried insects for in-
creased stamina. Serve it in a
sunflower feeder or mix with
your favorite seed to attract
warblers, woodpeckers, blue-
birds and nuthatches.
* Suet Nuts combines
nourishing peanuts and ber-
ry suet.
* Suet Pearls feature sun-
flower meats buried within
energy-packed suet. You can
serve them separately or mix
with seed.
Your seed choices should
be high-quality and tailored
to provide birds with the big-
gest energy bonanza possi-
ble. Sunflower is a great
seed option for winter be-
cause it’s rich in oil, which
attracts birds and provides
them with plenty of energy.
Cole’s Oil Sunflower is the
highest-grade black oil sun-
flower seed, it’s over 99 per-
cent pure and cleaned four
times to ensure you get
more seed and fewer sticks.
Peanuts are another high-
energy option. Choose
hulled varieties that are
whole — and more nutri-
tious than peanut pieces.
They’re especially attractive

to titmice, nuthatches, wrens
and woodpeckers.
Once you’ve invested in
good seed and the right feed-
ers, don’t overlook the im-
portance of storing it proper-
ly. Store in airtight
containers in an area of your
home where the seed won’t
be exposed to extreme tem-
peratures. Never store seed
outside as this can attract
pests and predators.
This winter, boost back-
yard birds’ energy levels and
serve up the right seed in
the right feeder. You’ll enjoy
winter bird-watching and the
birds will benefit from the
extra energy. Be patient, it
may take a few weeks before
the birds discover newly
placed feeders. While you
wait, be sure to keep the
feeders full. Eventually, the
birds will come. For more in-
formation on Cole’s Feed vis-

“Air leakage through
holes, gaps, and cracks is an-

causes of home heating and
cooling loss,” says Mike
Kontranowski, strategic mar-

for a significant amount of
the energy used in most
homes, with older homes be-
ing especially vulnerable to
air leaks.”
According to the U.S. De-

random air infiltration
through gaps and cracks ac-
counts for 25 to 40 percent of
the energy loss in most resi-

Wouldn’t it be great to

many other projects to con-

* Add insulation to your
attic to reduce heat loss and
* Install glass doors on
fireplaces to reduce drafts
and make sure your damper
is working properly.
* Clean vents, air ducts
and replace filters to
promote air flow and ease
the strain on your heating
and cooling system.
* Clean out gutters, and if
needed, have professional
gutter protection installed to
reduce the possibilities of ice
damming. If melting ice is
unable to drain due to debris
buildup, it could seep into
the walls and ceilings of your
home. Gutter Warrior by Ply
Gem is one option that
strengthens the gutters and
provides leaf protection.
* Drain a few gallons from
your water heater to remove
sediment and help it operate
more efficiently.
* Upgrade to low-mainte-
nance insulated vinyl siding,
like Mastic Home Exteriors

to efficiently minimize air

wall studs.
* Wrap your hot water
pipes in insulation pre-

reduce heat loss and lessen
the workload on your water

Keep your attic from being an energy drain
Special to the Trail-Gazette
(ARA) — The attic ac-
counts for a tremendous
amount of lost energy. This
space can reach up to 165
degrees in summer months.
When this heat makes its
way into the rest of the build-
ing, energy efficiency drops
and cooling costs rise. While
building a new home, a radi-
ant barrier is a proactive so-
lution to energy loss, reduc-
ing monthly cooling costs in
the process.
Consider adding
a radiant barrier
Radiant barriers can help
reduce summer heat gain
and hold in heat during the
winter months. An indepen-
dent study in 2010 by ConSol
indicated that radiant barrier
sheathing is one of the top
three energy-efficient tech-
nologies in new home con-
struction in terms of per-
formance, cost and return on
The U.S. Department of
Energy recognizes radiant
barriers as a way to lower
cooling energy usage during
the summer. Correctly in-
stalled, the foil surface of the
radiant barrier sheathing can
block up to 97 percent of the
radiant heat in the roof panel
from entering your attic.
This can lower the attic tem-
perature by as much as 30
degrees and reduce cooling
costs by up to 17 percent. A
cooler attic will benefit your
attic-installed air handling
system and in some cases re-
duce the tonnage required in
an HVAC system.
A year-long study per-
formed by SGS U.S. Testing
Company in the foothills of
North Carolina of two side-
by-side structures with and
without radiant barrier
sheathing shows that a radi-
ant barrier can also help pre-
vent attic heat loss during
the winter, reducing energy
costs by up to 5 percent. So
no matter what time of year,
a radiant barrier can help
you save.
How to choose the
right radiant barrier
When building a new
home, talk to your contractor
about adding a radiant bar-
rier into your roof system.
There are a number of radi-
ant barriers available, but
not all of these products are
the same. One critical factor
to keep in mind is how
quickly the radiant barrier
dries from potential moisture
during the construction pro-
In order to make sure
your contractor is using a ra-
diant barrier that has been
manufactured to help pre-
vent moisture issues, it’s im-
portant to understand just
how a radiant barrier is
made. Radiant barrier
sheathing typically consists
of a structural OSB (oriented
strand board) panel with a
layer of aluminum adhered
to the surface. Some radiant
barrier panel manufacturers
purchase foil materials that
come pre-perforated. This
may not necessarily allow
the panel to breathe, be-
cause the perforations do not
extend into the wood fiber of
the panel. An added chal-
lenge is that the adhesive
used to apply the radiant bar-
rier to the substrate can fill
in the perforations, decreas-
ing the ability of moisture in
the panel to escape.
One product on the mar-
ket, LP(R) TechShield(R)
Radiant Barrier Sheathing,
addresses the issue of mois-
ture through the use of the
patented VaporVents™ tech-
nology. This product fea-
tures incisions that penetrate
past the foil and glue and
into the wood fiber, allowing
the panels to breathe and
moisture to escape.
“Tests show that Vapor-
Vents technology allows the
panel to dry almost as effi-
ciently as OSB sheathing
without a radiant barrier,
while other products that
use pre-perforated foil show-
ed a significant amount of
moisture, in some cases
more than 30 percent, still in
the panel after 80 days of
drying. Wood needs to stay
under 19 percent moisture to
avoid structural issues,” says
David Drew, OSB technical
sales manager for LP Build-
ing Products.
the options
In an effort to reduce attic
temperatures, your builder
may recommend spray-foam
insulation to seal the attic
and create conditioned space
for the HVAC equipment.
While this can be an effec-
tive method with the right
amount of foam, it can also
be costly.
“Oakridge National Labo-
ratory recently released a
study showing that a roof
system composed of cool
roof shingles and radiant
barrier roof sheathing can
provide the same efficiency
as a roof-applied spray-foam
insulated attic at a substan-
tially lower cost,” Drew says.
When building a new
home, a radiant barrier is an
effective, smart way to
achieve greater energy effi-
ciency. However, not all radi-
ant barrier products are cre-
ated equal. Choosing the
right radiant barrier brand
can help protect against fu-
ture hassles and costs asso-
ciated with moisture dam-

Buying a fixer-upper? How to make the
most of your remodel
Special to the Trail-Gazette
(ARA) — With home prices
and interest rates still low
across the country, and in-

time to be in the market for
a fixer-upper. By buying a
house that needs some
work, you can achieve your
dream home for less than
you would probably pay for
a move-in-ready abode.
To ensure you’re making
the most of your invest-
ment, however, it pays to
take a look at your credit
before you buy and begin
your remodel. You’ll not
only need credit to cover
the purchase price of the
house, but you’ll need it for
renovation expenses as
The first step you should
take in your bid to buy a
fixer-upper is to check your
credit report and score.
Websites like www.credi-
treport.com can help you
understand your credit.
Understanding your credit
will help you know whether
or not you can afford to buy
a house that needs work
and if you’ll be able to pay
for the needed renovations.
You should also carefully
research what your options
are for financing your re-
model. Learn what your op-
tions are, from traditional
fixed mortgages to home
equity lines of credit, and
decide before you buy
which type of financing will
be best for you. Getting a
handle on your financing
before you buy can help en-
sure you stay on budget
when you’re in the middle
of renovations.
When you’ve got a clear
picture of your credit sta-
tus and financing options,
you can start looking at fix-
er-uppers. When you find a
good prospect, have your
remodeling contractor
walk through the house
with you so he can give you
a rough estimate of what
needs to be done and how
much the work will cost.
If you’re buying a house
that’s in basically good con-
dition but just looks dated,
you’ll have to make some
decisions about where to
invest your money. Focus
on improvements that will
not only look good, but will
also enhance the value of
your home. Resources like
Remodeling Magazine’s
Cost vs. Value report can
give you a good idea of how
much of your original in-
vestment you’ll recoup on
different remodeling proj-
ects at the time of resale.
Once you’ve signed all
the paperwork and the
house is yours, it’s time to
get to work. If you’re
handy, you may be able to
save money by doing some
of the renovation work
yourself. Projects like
painting, adding crown
molding and even putting
down new flooring are well
within the skills of most do-
it-yourselfers. More com-
plex projects like drywall,
plumbing or electrical
work may be best left to
Whether you do the
work yourself, or hire con-
tractors, you’ll need to
carefully manage all as-
pects of the renovation to
ensure your remodel stays
on budget. The excitement
of remodeling a house into
your dream home can
make it easy to get carried
away on spending. Keep in
mind that remodeling esti-
mates are just that — an es-
timate. The final tab is rare-
ly exactly what your
contractor predicted it
would be. Build in at least
10 percent extra to cover
emergency overruns, and
avoid making any unneces-
sary changes to the plans
while the project is under-

Green living plus green savings: an
efficient equation for today’s homeowners
Special to the Trail-Gazette

According to the Energy
Information Administration,
the demand for green homes
is expected to rise 900 per-
cent in the next five years.
In the home, using energy
efficient appliances can dra-
matically reduce energy
waste and cut costs. Compa-
nies like Miele offer a wide
range of Energy Star rated
appliances for every room in
the house from the kitchen
to the laundry room.
For example, Miele offers
induction cooktops, which
use a non-contact method of
heating using magnetic
fields to transfer energy di-
rectly to cookware. The in-
duction element stays cool,
while the target object heats
up rapidly for extremely effi-
cient cooking. Like gas, in-
duction is exceptionally easy
and quick to control. The
ability to precisely control
the power makes induction
perfect for all types of cook-
ing. It is highly reactive and
exceedingly safe. The cook-
ing surface is cool in opera-
