Premise Pains Rinnegan Hold the Hidden Truth behind the Secrets in the Naruto Universe To understand the secret history of the Naruto Universe we must first learn about the Sage of the Six Paths. The Sage of the Six Paths (, Rikud Sennin) also known as the Great Sage was a legendary person who founded the arts of ninjutsu and started the shinobi world. He defeated the TenTailed Beast and sealed it within him thus becoming the first jinchriki. According to Jiraiya, the Sage was a priest who appeared long ago in an age of endless war. He was the first to explain the truth about chakra and tried to use his power and wisdom to lead the world to peace instead of war. The Sage travelled throughout the world, spreading his ideas and religion, the Shinobi Sect ( , Ninsh), which eventually came to be known as ninjutsu. His great deeds and true desire to bring peace to the war-torn world led him to become widely known as the Saviour of this World (, Kono Yo no Kyseishu). According to Madara Uchiha, centuries before the beginning of the main storyline, the Sage defeated the most powerful demon in the shinobi world, the Ten-Tailed Beast. In order to protect the world from the Ten-Tails, the Sage developed an unknown technique to seal the beast within himself, allowing him to harness and control its terrifying power, and making himself the first jinchriki. Although he had successfully sealed the Ten-Tails,
~1~

its power was so great that the seal would break after the Great Sage's death. Aware of this, the Great Sage used Izanagi to divide the Ten-Tails' chakra into nine parts, which would become known as the tailed beasts. He then used Chibaku Tensei to seal the TenTails' body inside a gigantic stone prison in the sky, thus creating the moon. The Sage would leave behind a tablet for his descendants, which details his history with the Ten-Tails. Only those who possess the Rinnegan can fully decipher what is written on the tablet, while a person with a different djutsu can still partially interpret the information. The Sage's ultimate wish to establish peace throughout the world was a goal that could never be achieved within his lifetime alone. Knowing that his end was approaching, the Sage entrusted his strength, dream, and legacy to his two sons. The older son, who inherited the Great Sage's "eyes" (his powerful chakra and spiritual energy), believed that power was the true key to peace. The younger son, who inherited the Sage's "body" (his powerful will and physical energy), believed that love was the true key to peace. On his deathbed, the Sage chose his younger son to be his successor. Overcome by bitterness and envy, the older son attacked the younger, beginning a war between them. A feud that would continue down the ages through their descendants: the Senju clan and the Uchiha clan. The Rinnegan would later resurface, manifesting itself in its perfected form in Nagato, a descendant of the Uzumaki clan who are distant relatives of the Senju, descendants of The Great Sage. Jiraiya believed that the Great Sage could have somehow been "reborn" as Nagato in the present era. Nagato himself, however, admitted that his own power paled in comparison to that of the Sage. Still others, such as Kakashi Hatake, believed that the Great Sage is merely a myth, and that the Rinnegan is merely a mutation. However, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's acknowledgment of the Great Sage (and the tailed beasts' apparent status as the only survivors from the Great Sage's lifetime), lends credibility to his existence.

~2~

Following the death of the Sage of the Six Paths and the subsequent feud between the brothers, the tablet was lost to antiquity. So fierce were the battles between the two brothers and their supporters that entire villages would be destroyed in less than a day. Eventually, the war became one of attrition where every shinobi counted. Each side fearing the worst from the other used blood rites (or blood curses) to gain strength. These dark rites granted their practitioners awesome jutsus with overwhelming potential for destruction. So feared were these jutsus that most became taboo after the war ended. As with the tablet, the knowledge to create these techniques died with the original users. Over the centuries, having inherited the curse blood from their forebears, only the blood descendants of the original practitioners are able to utilize these cursed techniques. In time most of these cursed techniques were lost as their users and descendants died out. The remnants of these techniques are what have become known in the modern age as the Kekkei Genkai or Bloodline Limits. Saddened by the devastation and the suffering of the people, the second brother devised a strategy to end the war. By sacrificing the souls of his five most willing and loyal generals, the second son created the Dead Demon Consuming Seal and enchanted a special kunai. With this weapon he would kill his brother and surrender his life in the process a payment for activating the seal. On the last day of the final battle, the second brother with a 50,000 strong shinobi force battled into the depths of the enemy camp, and in single combat plunged the enchanted kunai into his brothers heart. The initial blast on triggering the Dead Demon Consuming Seal decimated four-fifths of the elder brothers clan and forced an end to the long war. However, the second brother too weakened by his injuries was unable to complete the seal. Instead of being completely sealed the tremendous power of the Rinnegan was shattered. The power of the Rinnegan would be significantly diminished into what would become known as the lesser Byakugan and the greater Sharingan. By the time the war

~3~

ended close to 5 million shinobi and 60 times as many civilians had perished. Interestingly, the Demon Consuming Seal used by the Third and Fourth Hokages, given some similarities to historical accounts of the second sons sealing technique, adopted the name from the original technique. However, the latter sealing technique is actually a separate derivation created by the Uzumaki Clan utilizing some of the finjutsu elements from the original jutsu. Thus, the latter sealing technique has no destructive force but rather retains the sealing power of the source jutsu. Another major difference between the jutsus is the use of human sacrifices. The ultimate form of the Demon Consuming Seal requires, in addition to the summoner, five additional human sacrifices each possessing one of the five elementary chakra nature transformations: earth, wind, fire, water and lightening, to activate a curse that would bind the descendants of the target in perpetual submission to the blood descendants of the user. Although the specific mechanics of the curse remains lost to history, the curse was thought to function not unlike the curse used by the main branch of the Hyga clan in modern times, and may actually be the origin of the Hyga technique. However, as the original curse bound the spirit and not the body there is no outward curse mark. After the battle, those who would one day become the Hyga clan, consumed with sadness and regret and being met by kindness and a willingness to forgive, by the second brothers clan, realized their mistake and accepted the second brother and his clan as the rightful heir to the Great Sage. This acceptance of the second brothers claim as heir by the early Byakugan users led to a violent split with those who would become Sharingan users who branded them as cowards, and capitulators unfit of their heritage. Eventually the Byakugan users were cast out and taken in by the second brothers clan. In the ensuing years, the Uchiha, Senju and Hyga clans were formed. And the Hyga clan in time became founding members of the Leaf Village.
~4~

Throughout the years, there have been those born of the Uchiha and Hyga clans with eyes resembling the famed Rinnegan. However, these Rinnegans were incomplete and held a miniscule fraction of the Rinnegans original power. In addition, the eyes bore like resemblance to the Rinnegan and thus were thought of by the respective clans as a mutation of the more common Sharingan and Byakugan. Further supporting this false premise was the fact that these individuals lives were unnaturally short never living beyond their eleventh year of life. Unknown to anyone, save for a few Clan Elders of the early Senju, these individuals died as a result of the Dead Demon Consuming Seal that was casted those many decades ago. For a time there was peace. Highly regarded for their powerful jutsu the influence of the Senju and Uchiha forebears over time steadily grew. But the overly aggressive actions of the Uchiha ancestors were keep in constant check by the early Senju using the mystical curse; thus maintain stability between the clans. The early Senju clan having grown arrogant and abusive often splintered due to infighting. Over time, not only the Uchiha but the people grew resentful of the Senjus dominance. As the Great Sage had predicted; upon his death the prison containing the Ten-Tailed Beast begun to weaken. In time, the Ten-Tailed Beast was able to make contact, in spirit form, with a small band of Uchiha who resented being bound by the mystical curse, and became convinced of the divinity of the Ten-Tailed Beast. The Ten-Tailed Beast made a pact with these men that in return for their eternal loyalty the bond of servitude would be lifted. These men seizing on the chance for vengeance against the early Senju, agreed to the Ten-Tailed Beast terms, taking within each of their bodies a small portion of the Ten-Tails spirit which enhanced their chakra levels, but bound their souls for all time to the Ten-Tails demon. One of these men was Huwei, brother to the leader of the early Uchiha. Revelling in his newfound power Huwei sought to share the Ten-Tails gifts with all Uchiha and ensure the revival Clan. Huwei pleaded with his brother Suwei and the Clan Elders to accept the Ten-Tails offer and the gifts of superior reflexes,
~5~

senses and stamina, which came with the enhancement of their chakra. However, Suwei and the Clan Elders unwilling to side with the Ten-Tailed Beast, an enemy of their founder the First Brother, the Uchiha banished the men who had made the pact with the great enemy. Sparing their lives in gratitude for the service they had performed for the clan. But the Ten-Tails had already succeeded in its purpose as not all Uchiha had to agree to its bargain. The demon now had mortal servants bound to its will that would work towards its freedom. The early Senju were alerted to the lifting of the curse when a young Uchiha in defending his family killed the pre-Senju aggressors. The family was later killed by the early Senju in retaliation and an investigation initiated assess why the binding curse failed. The investigation later unearthed information detailing Huweis bargain with the Ten-Tailed Beast and his exile. In the years immediately following the lifting of the early Uchihas curse tensions with the early Senju started to rise again. The early Senju fearing the lifting of the curse meant renewed hostilities by the Uchiha, and the resurrection of the Ten-Tailed Beast made preparations to go to war to end the threat of the Uchiha. However, the early Senjus fears where assuaged by the offer of Uchiha peace treaty, and the fact that those individuals manifesting variants of the Rinnegan continued to live short lives. A decade after the lifting of the Uchiha curse, a small movement, founded by the banished ex-Uchiha, calling themselves Sages of the True God arose and began denouncing the dominance of the early Senju clan. In actuality, these monks worshipped the TenTailed Beast and sought to free the demon and make its power their own. The movement seized upon the peoples greed and frustration with the current system of patronage, dominated by the conceited Senju clan, eventually growing into a frightening hoard bring death to all non-believers. Recognizing the Hoard as agents of the Ten-Tailed Beast a tentative alliance was forged between the early Senju, Uchiha and other minor clans to ensure that the Ten-Tailed Beast would remain imprisoned for all time. After the war, the early Senju and Uchiha realizing that their only
~6~

option lay with limiting the Ten-Tail Beast influence on earth and created the buffer zone - a dimensional space between earth and the Beasts prison. After the war, minor clans of Senju and Uchiha, tired of the constant conflict, undertook to living in the same villages. In time these clans became one, mixing the bloodlines through marriage. What once was Senju and Uchiha became something new. This new clan would eventually found the Uzushiogakure. Although the clan attempted to maintain cordial relations with both Senju and Uchiha, their mix marriages tended to be more shunned by the Uchiha which led to an eventual closer relationship with Senju. Of all the families that settled the Uzushiogakure those who would become the Uzumaki Clan became prominent for their powerful chakra reserves, strength and comparatively long-life spans. As well, the sharing of blood and jutsu made for a potent mix that manifested itself especially in this new tribes affinity for finjutsu or sealing techniques and hidden curses. Jealously, fear and hatred of this mixed union tribe would eventually lead to the destruction of the Uzushiogakure. With the passage of time, the Great Sage, the Brothers, the Ten-Tail Beast and other historical events pasted into myth and legend. However, from the distillation of all these events, only members of the Uzumaki Clan who share the bloodline of both sons of the Great Sage can manifest the true Rinnegan, without fear of premature death. Later the Senju and Uchiha clans where thus named. Embracing their long heritage the clans continued to engage in sporadic titfor-tat fighting and reprisal killings. Old resentments, petty arguments often led to clan wars and skirmishes. In some cases, the Senju and Uchiha clans fought on behalf of other clans against each other for profit. However, after the long centuries, both clans could no longer remember the exact reason why they hated each other so fiercely, just that they did. In the time before the creation of the shinobi villages, shinobi were organized into small mercenary clans that knew nothing but battle. Of the countless shinobi clans, the Uchiha clan and
~7~

the Senju clan were the strongest. After much bloodshed, the Senju clan offered a truce with the Uchiha. Madara Uchiha objected to the truce, but was forced by the rest of the Uchiha to accept. The Senju, the Uchiha, clans subjugated by the Uchiha, and other free minor clans came together to create Konohagakure. Hashirama Senju, the leader of the Senju, used his wood release abilities to produce much of the villages' infrastructure. For this reason he was selected as First Hokage by the villagers. Fearing that the Senju, now in control of Konoha, would oppress their former rivals - the Uchiha, Madara tried to gather support to overthrow Hashirama. No Uchiha would help, forcing him to take on Hashirama by himself. Madara was ultimately defeated at what would be called the Valley of the End and was believed to have died. Sometime after the battle Konoha came into possession of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. Other tailed beasts would be hunted down and captured. To contain their awesome power, the village began the trend of sealing the beasts within individuals. A member of the Uzumaki Clan, owing to their powerful finjutsu, lifespan, physical prowess and the clans close ties to the Senju was chosen as the host for the Nine-Tailed Fox, the most powerful and malevolent of all tailed beasts. In time Hashirama gave the other tailed beasts in his possession to other newly-formed villages to promote peace. This was short lived. During his fight with the First Hokage, Madara Uchiha was mortally wounded. Appearing dead the First Hokage thought him finished and failed to ensure his demise. This would eventually prove to be a costly mistake for the Leaf. As a result of the serious injuries he received Madara Uchiha found he was unable to perform any meaningful jutsus. Weakened and hiding from everyone, Madara Uchiha was slowly dying. In a bid for a second chance at life Madara Uchiha sought out a hidden sect of monks rumored to be highly skilled in the forbidden arts, but these monks could not be found. As Madara Uchiha lay on his death bed he was visited by the monk- Styr a direct descendant of Huwei. The monk promised
~8~

Madara a second life and greater glory; for a price. Madara was to become the monks ultimate weapon, a general to lead the monks forces in a glorious battle to restore the faith of the True God. Sensing Madara Uchihas hesitancy the monk taunted Madara, wielder of the Mangeky Sharingan, for his humiliating defeat at the hands of the Senju Hokage. Madara Uchiha now chastened, demanded that the monk to use the dark arts to heal him. In return Madara would reward him richly and destroy the Senju, sensing the monks shared hatred for the clan. Styr told Madara that his wounds were beyond his skills and that of his Order to heal. However, for the price of unwavering loyalty to the Order he could be revived after death as an immortal warrior using the darkest of their dark arts Tensei Ninjutsu (the Reincarnation Technique) which would bind apart of his soul on the earthly plane. Styr quickly reassured Madara Uchiha that he had nothing to lose and that the technique was the only way to obtain his revenge. At deaths door and abandoned, Madara was willing to surrender his very soul for a chance to strike back at the Senju and Uchiha clans. Madara swore his blood oath to become the monks general and as he passed into darkness Styr bound half of his soul in a crystal. Madara Uchihas lifeless body, together with the crystal containing half his soul, was taken by Styr to the high mountains. There hidden by snow and ice, Styr, Head of the Order of Sages of the True God gathered his brother monks to commence the ritual. No longer will they remain in hiding, slowly gathering strength. Soon they will have their general, Madara Uchiha master of the Mangeky Sharingan and possibly the greatest Uchiha Shinobi ever to be born, would be the instrument of their vengeance on the accused Senju clan. Calling upon the forbidden arts, dark jutsu created at the height of the war between the two sons of the Great Sage, the monks transferred Madaras soul into one of their members. Repeatedly reincarnated into new hosts, Madara Uchiha quickly lost faith in the reincarnation technique. Imperfect, the jutsu only lasted five years thereafter a new host had to be found and the
~9~

process repeated. But more importantly, Madara found that his powers were diminished from that of his original body, and his senses dulled by constant pain. In particular, he was unable to utilize the ultimate visual justu awakened during his battle with the First Hokage The Rinnegan. The Reincarnation Technique, less potent than the Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu later developed by Orochimaru, allowed the practitioner to transfer a soul into a host body. If repeated periodically, this process could grant an individual a sense of immortality as long as a new host body is found before the old body expires and the soul is lost to the other world. The Reincarnation Technique was later rediscovered and improved by Orochimaru, working on his own, conducting forbidden experiments to find a means to attain immortality. Unlike the Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu, which represented a more perfect form, the Reincarnation Technique resulted in faster deterioration of the host body owing to the use of the Ten-Tailed Beast chakra in the revival process. As a result, the user suffered near constant agony, requiring the continuous ingestion of medication to aid in pain management. However, as a plus, the host body lasted a full two years extra than the three years with Orochimarus jutsu. Nevertheless, once the time limit is reached the user is forced to transfer to another host, as the current host body rejects the foreign soul and shuts down permanently. During the First Great Shinobi War the Impure World Resurrection Summoning was created by Tobirama of the Senju as a means to win the War. Although Madara Uchiha heard of the new technique, he forbade the monks from attempting to learn its secrets out of fear that it would be used to be revive him when his five years were up. Madara reasoned correctly that although technique would grant him immortality he would become a mindless thrall to the monks whose hidden motives he distrusted. The Impure World Resurrection Summoning would later be perfected by Orochimaru and enhanced by Kabuto (or so he claims).

~ 10 ~

Madara Uchiha eventually grew tired of the cycle of reincarnation, and demanded that the monks fashion for him a new perfect body. A body befitting of the greatest of all Shinobi; one blessed with inhuman skill and would never age. In return for doing this Madara would share some secrets of his eternal Mangeky Sharingan. He also revealed to the monks that he had awakened the Rinnegan during his battle with the First Hokage. Knowing of the monks fanatic obsession with acquiring the power of the Rinnegan, for some secret purpose, and that his Mangeky Sharingan was the reason that they had initially sought him out, Madara used the Rinnegan as bait to tempt the monks into making him whole once again by retrieving the other half soul from the other world and transferring his reconstituted soul into new more powerful body. After several attempts at creating a suitable body failed, Madara killed Styr as an example to the other monks for failing to keep their promise. Unable to fulfill Madaras request and fearing his anger, that they would all be killed, the monks decided to switch Madaras pain medication with a sleeping potion. Tricking Madara into believing that the substituted sleeping drug was his regular medication, the monks sought to bide their time while they continued their attempts to create his perfect body. At the first sip Madara Uchiha fell to the floor paralyzed. However, before being rendered completely unconscious the monks promised Madara that he would be awoken when his new body was ready. In the interim the monks continued to transfer Madaras soul at five year intervals while they pursued their work. While Madara slept the monks plotted. In time they created covert cells to spy on and infiltrate many of the newly formed Hidden Villages. Fearing the strength of Konohagakure many of the smaller villages began to rely, to ever greater extents, on these covert cells for information and clandestine missions. Soon the ANBU and Intelligence Divisions of these villages were infiltrated by shinobi loyal to the Sages of the True God. Over the ensuing years, the monks employed a key stratagem to have their agents periodically report likely sightings of a shinobi closely resembling
~ 11 ~

Madara Uchiha. This would instill fear especially in the smaller nations and pave the way for Madaras eventual return. From these respected positions the spies stoked concealed resentment, fear, and even hatred of the Konohagakure and the other villages. Agitation by forces loyal to the False Sages, led to war among many of the smaller countries and their hidden villages. As more wars broke out, Konohagakure was overrun by messengers of the smaller nations seeking protection or treaties of non-interference. These wars escalated when shinobi aligned with the Land of the Sky launched a simultaneous sneak attack against the Tea and Marsh Countries long protected by Konohagakure. Soon treaties formed by the Five Great Shinobi Nations signed with smaller nations were invoked, within mere weeks the major powers were at war. The conflict quickly spread, and The First Great Shinobi World War had begun. The First Great Shinobi World War ( , Daiichiji Ninkai Taisen), or simply the Great Shinobi World War ( , Ninkai Taisen), was the first of the great wars that involved the majority of shinobi villages and countries. There are few reliable surviving records of this war, but the experiences of this war led to the birth of the tactics that still form the cornerstone of modern warfare. It ended with an armistice treaty, but only after all of the Five Great Nations had been seriously damaged. The war started not long after the system of one shinobi village per country was established by the founding of Konohagakure. To try and maintain a balance of power, the First Hokage divided the tailed beasts among the hidden villages of the other Five Great Shinobi Nations when he began his peace talks with them. However, this was not enough to prevent the war, and may have actually increased hostilities. The First Great War saw the nine tailed beasts, then only feared as an inescapable act of nature, being utilized as weapons of war for the first time since the dark ages where the war between the Two Brothers raged and led to the annihilation of several ancient countries. The Tailed Beasts have been considered as essential military assets ever since.

~ 12 ~

The First Great Shinobi World War ended with an armistice treaty, but also left the Five Great Shinobi Nations seriously damaged and lacking in resources. So great was the damage that it was agreed that future wars would be fought only in satellite countries. The armistice treaty led to a period of peace, but after about twenty years, the economic disparity between the Five Great Shinobi Nations had become a serious problem. At close of the First Great Shinobi World War the economies of many of the smaller nations were in ruins. This crisis led to many old treaties of patronage with the Five Great Shinobi Nations being disavowed and new treaties being negotiated. This led to friction between old allies which saw new more delicate alliances being formed with former enemies that distrusted each other. During this time food shortages became common place erupting in civil unrest and ill-feelings as some countries began to feel exploited by their more powerful neighbours, including those professing to be their allies. Amegakure, a minor nation, is known to have suffered greatly under this state of affairs. The great countries, in particular the Lands of Water and Wind, began to denounce the treaty as a curtailment of their sovereignty. Eventually the Lands of Lightening, Earth and Wind, under the pretext of reasserting their sovereign rights, started using military force to expand into disputed territories. Several smaller territories rich in resources were annexed. The Land of Fire fearing an impending attack launched a pre-emptive strike against the Land of Wind beginning what would become the Second Great Shinobi World War. This war would become the most gruesome and bloodiest of all the Great Wars to date. What began as a war for resources quickly devolved into an all out war for supremacy and complete victory. The Second Great Shinobi World War ( , Dainiji Ninkai Taisen) was the second of four great wars involving the majority of the shinobi villages and countries. Not much is known about the exact politics of this era, but there were known conflicts between Konohagakure, led by the Third Hokage, Sunagakure, likely led by the Third Kazekage, Amegakure, led by Hanz of the Salamander, and Iwagakure, presumably led by the Third Tsuchikage. The majority of the fighting seems to have taken
~ 13 ~

place in minor countries like Amegakure, leaving them devastated. The eventual outcome of the war seems to have been in favor of Konoha. Nagato referred to it as a war Konoha started. As with all wars, the Second Great Shinobi World War brought forth many heroes and took even more lives. It was during this war the legendary Sannin rose to fame and received their nickname from Hanz during a skirmish with Amegakure. Tsunade in particular became famous as the world's greatest medical-nin while successfully countering all of Chiyo's poisons. It was also likely the war where Sakumo Hatake made his name as "Konoha's White Fang". On the other side, it was the war where Tsunade lost her younger brother Nawaki and her lover Dan, leaving her with an extreme case of haemophobia. It was also the war that took the lives of Sasori's parents, an event that eventually led him to desert his village and join Akatsuki. The Amegakure orphans lost their parents during this war, leading Jiraiya to take care of them for a while, claiming it was the least he could do. One of the orphans, Nagato, would come to desire an end to war because of his experiences from this war, a purpose he used Akatsuki for. Madara Uchihas new body was created after the events of the Second Great Shinobi World War. Shortly thereafter the master of the Mangeky Sharingan was finally revived by the False Sages. Madara Uchihas new body was unwittingly made for him by Orochimaru who was tricked by the False Sages who failed to deliver on their promise to give him the secret to gain immortality. But Orochimaru would have his revenge in the end. Orochimaru, the beloved student of the Third Hokage Sarutobi, was an extremely gifted shinobi who acquitted himself well in the Second Great Shinobi World War. A prodigy, Orochimaru was brilliant but arrogant and though he held ambitions of becoming the Fourth Hokage, he saw the position as a mere stepping stone to further greatness. Seeing the darkness in Orochimarus soul the Third Hokage selected Minato Namikaze as the next Hokage. Orochimaru saw his being passed over as the ultimate betrayal by
~ 14 ~

his sensei. Realizing that he had hit a dead end in his quest to become the ultimate shinobi and had nothing to gain from staying in Konoha, Orochimaru began to be less discreet with his actions, often voicing displeasure with the Thirds policies. During his time with the Leaf Village, Orochimarus increasingly estrangement from his fellow Leaf shinobi; perceived slights on the part of the Third Hokage; and his growing obsession with acquiring the secret to immortality led him to make an alliance with the Foundation, led by Danzo. Sharing a mutual hatred of the Third, Orochimaru and Danzo found common accord. In exchange for access to the villages confidential files on forbidden jutsus especially those dating back to the era of the Two Brothers previously denied him by the Third, funding, and other resources, Orochimaru would spy on The Third for the Foundation as well as conduct off the book wet-work missions. While on kill missions, Orochimaru would test out new jutsus and seek out any and all clues to achieve his ultimate goal immortality. Aided by Danzo, Orochimaru first started his human experiments on captured enemy shinobi. Danzo would come to acknowledge Orochimarus ruthlessness, which mirrored his own, and talent for creating new jutsus and weapons, which proved useful in eliminating the Foundations enemies inside and outside the Leaf Village. Early successes in Orochimarus experiments led Danzo to secretly co-opt Orochimarus work and made alterations to his physiology in order to utilize Kekkei Genkais, which he had long coveted. However, Danzo also saw a growing darkness in Orochimaru and fearing his betrayal kept him under close surveillance and begun to restrict human trails into more arcane overly powerful jutsus. In time Orochimaru would come to resent the Foundations surveillance and the restrictions placed on his experimentation. This resentment led to Orochimarus attempt to use a binding jutsu to control Danzos mind and body but was discovered by Danzos agents. In order to escape the Foundations grasp Orochimaru threatened to reveal Danzos secrets to the Third Hokage. However, unaware that the Foundation had discovered
~ 15 ~

his use of Leaf shinobi in his experiments; the Foundation seized the initiative and clandestinely disclosed Orochimarus human experiments to the Third. Over the years, Orochimaru had been kidnapping his fellow Konoha shinobi and used them as human guinea pigs. He experimented on them to develop techniques that would grant him immortality, as he had already decided that he would settle for no less than to learn all jutsu in the world (a task that would take much more than one human lifetime). When the many disappearances were finally traced to Orochimaru, Hiruzen knew that it was his duty to kill him. At the time however, Hiruzen was unable to bring himself to kill his prized student for whom he had such high hopes. The Foundations revelation of his covert activities led to Orochimaru desertion from the Leaf Village and the end of his active association with Danzo and the Foundation. However, not before Orochimaru kidnapped sixty children and injected them with the First Hokages DNA, hoping to recreate the First's Wood Release jutsu. Orochimaru rediscovery of the Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu eventually came to the attention of the False Sages who saw great promise in his work. The monks, using the extensive network they created before the First Great Shinobi World War, kept a watchful eye over Orochimaru as he wandered from country to country, kidnapping helpless victims for his many experiments. Often they helped to conceal Orochimarus movements or misdirect the ANBU of the Great Nations who were in hot in pursuit of him. Orochimarus experiments and subsequent defection from the Leaf gave the False Sages, agents of the Ten-Tailed Beast, the opportunity to revive Madara Uchiha. Having failed many times before the False Sages gave up their attempts to create the perfect vessel for Madara Uchiha. Instead, the False Sages turned their attention to recruiting someone with the right abilities who could. Seen as being more advanced than anyone else, at the time, in resurrection techniques, the False Sages turned to
~ 16 ~

Orochimaru for a solution. Observing, from a distance, Orochimarus lust for power and the twisted nature of his experiments, the False Sages correctly deduced that Orochimarus real goal was the secret to immortality. Seizing on Orochimarus Achilles' heel the False Sages set out to turn his vice against him. Utilizing the extract of a near extinct plant, known for its medicinal properties, and a drop of the Ten-Tailed Beast chakra the monks derived an exlir that displayed remarkable rejuvenating properties. Orochimaru was contacted by an intermediary of the False Sages and commissioned to create a new body using special cells, Orochimaru believed were procured from superior shinobi specimens worldwide. In return for his assistance the monks promised to provide Orochimaru with the formula to the exlir of life. Orochimaru did has he was asked, but upon examining the cells grew suspicious of the monks. Laced in the cells was a powerful charka that he could not identify. Also, he recognized cells belonging to the First Hokage. Fearing that the bodys power may surpass his own, and not trusting the monks, Orochimaru subtly sabotaged Madara Uchiha's new body in hope of attain some leverage should the need arise. Upon completion of his work, as payment the monks gave Orochimaru a sample of the exlir he desired, he would receive the formula once the body was fully checked out. Unfortunately for him his deception was uncovered and the monks attempted to have him killed. With no formula and no means of testing the exlir sample without exhausting it, Orochimaru decided to test the exlir on himself. The exlir seemingly worked, immediately his aging slowed, and then reversed restoring his youthful appearance. However, Orochimaru in days reverted to his former self, experiencing severe pain and discomfort. Double-crossed by the False Sages, Orochimaru was slowly becoming a thrall to the TenTailed Beast whose chakra the monks had used to create the exlir. Attempts by Orochimaru to find an antidote to the exlirs side-effects failed. In time the illness that gradually spread throughout Orochimarus entire body. Eventually, Orochimaru was forced to use the Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu to transfer to
~ 17 ~

a new body. However, a few months after transferring Orochimaru discovered that that new body started to deteriorate as well. Some time thereafter Orochimaru joined the elite criminal organization Akatsuki with the intention of studying the members, each possessing strong chakra levels and unique skills in a bid to cure his illness. Failing that, Orochimaru had decided to transfer into the body of one of the Akatsuki should the need arise. It was around this time that Itachi Uchiha joined Akatsuki after conducting the Uchiha clan massacre. Orochimaru saw his opportunity to gain possession of the Sharingan, and soon made his attempt to steal Itachi's body. However, Orochimarus attempt to capture Itachi for his Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu failed miserably. During his kidnap attempt, Itachi used his Sharingan to cast a genjutsu on Orochimaru effortlessly defeating him. In order to prevent Orochimaru from breaking the genjutsu Itachi cut off Orochimaru's left hand. The attempted kidnapping of a fellow Akatsuki member and the lost of his hand forced Orochimaru to leave Akatsuki and acquire a new body. Unknowing to Orochimaru included in Itachis genjutsu was a strong compulsion to not harm Sasuke who Itachi feared would be Orochimarus next victim. This compulsion, Itachi believed would prevent Orochimaru from directly targeting Sasuke for revenge. But failed to deter Orochimarus true purpose of possessing Sasuke, which negated the need to dispose of the physical vessel. Subsequent to leaving Akatsuki, Orochimaru, discovered the cursed seals and in retaliation for the False Sages betrayal attacked the monks hideout with a squad of some 100 shinobis, exterminating all but two the Orders members. To aid in the attack Orochimaru gave a number of his subordinates imperfect cursed seals which enhanced their abilities but resulted in their deaths within a year of receiving their seals. Orochimaru, however, later refined the process creating the Heaven and Earth seals the two most powerful cursed seals. In addition, Orochimaru used his Impure World Resurrection Summoning to revive long dead shinobi via secreted samples given to him previously by the monks themselves in their subterfuge. The use of the samples also gave an astonished Orochimaru an interesting bonus, when

he resurrected the infamous Madara. However, unlike the other resurrected shinobi Madara seemed somewhat weakened a condition unknowing to Orochimaru was a result of only resurrecting half a soul. Nonetheless, Orochimaru resolved to earnestly study Maradas unique physiology with a view to learning his secrets and tucked him away. Orochimaru would later go onto forming the Hidden Sound Village and to invade the Leaf Village with the aid of the Village Hidden in the Sand. Earlier failed attempts to kidnapped Sasuke Uchiha led Orochimaru seek out Sasuke during the Leafs Chunin exams. In time Orochimaru used Sasukes hatred for his brother Itachi and his desire for power to lure Sasuke to him. The plan succeeded but the attempt to take over Sasuke Uchihas body was met with complete failure as Sasuke struck first, using the power of his Sharigan to suppressed Orochimarus will and absorb his power. Orochimaru was finally exercised from Sasuke Uchihas body by his older brother Itachi. Currently, Orochimarus soul resides in the body of Kabuto, his most loyal servant, awaiting his resurrection once his soul is freed of the Ten-Tailed Beast curse. However, by accepting Orochimaru's soul and power Kabuto is now slowly dying from the same disease as Orochimaru, a fact he is well aware of. Following his awakening in his new body, Madara, was infuriated with the monks for their failure in stopping Orochimaru from sabotaging his new body. However, all was not lost. The new body, as poor as it was, did eliminate the need for his constant body swaps as well as the excruciating pain. Also, the composition of the body allow for easy swapping of replacement parts in the event of damage. But more importantly, given the monks inability to retrieve the remainder of his soul from the other world he restrained himself from ending them then and there. Unbeknownst to anyone, Orochimarus use of the Impure World Resurrection Summoning to revive Madara from the dead actually prevented the monks from doing the same as the soul no longer resided in the other world. To make-up for their failures it was the monks who taught Madara how to access a special dimension to replenish his strength.

Out of frustration, Madara left the monks retreat making his way to explore the many countries, and infiltrate the hidden villages with the aid of the False Sages Spy Network. Eventually, Madaras journey took him to the Kirigakure ( , Kirigakure no Sato; Literally meaning "Village Hidden in the Mist") is located in the Land of Water. As one of the five great shinobi villages, the Village Hidden in the Mist would prove ideal for his plan of revenge. Madara would go onto cast a genjustu on the Mizukage controlling his mind. During his time controlling the Mizukage, the village became known as the "Village of the Bloody Mist" (, Chigiri no Sato), mostly because of the barbaric ritual where Academy students kill one another in order to graduate. This practice was discontinued when an entire graduating batch of Academy students were massacred by a young Zabuza Momochi. It is likely that Yagura was the Mizukage whom Zabuza tried to assassinate when he revolted. Yagura was also known to dispatch Kiri-nin who were suspected of being disloyal to the village immediately (commending and taking Kisame Hoshigaki as his direct subordinate after assassinating a traitorous member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist). Yet despite the terror of his reign, he appeared to be kind. Apparently the people of Kiri feared that Yagura was being manipulated, a fear which was confirmed by Ao, who saw through an unnamed genjutsu with his Byakugan, later identified by Kisame as the work of Madara Uchiha. At present, Madara Uchiha is little more than a marionette. Because of Orochimaru's treachery his new body is not as durable as it was meant to be. As such, Madara Uchiha's new body has to be sustained by the power of the Ten-Tailed Beast. This means that he has to conserve power and he periodically has to return to the spirit dimension in order to replenish his powers. Madara Uchiha does not know how the rejuvenation process works, just that it does. As a result of the flaws Orochimaru introduced to Madara Uchihas body the Ten-Tailed Beast cannot control Madara Uchiha completely as was intended. However, with each

infusion of chakra the Ten-Tailed Demons influence over Madara Uchihas actions grows. In his travels Madara met Sasori of the Red Sands. Sasori increasingly disillusioned by life in the Village and had taken to aimless wandering was easily approached and convinced by Madara to finally abandon the village and join a new organization - Akatsuki. Sometime thereafter Madara, in the guise of Tobi tempted Sasori to kill the Third Kazekage and make his power his own. The Third Great Shinobi World War ( , Daisanji Ninkai Taisen) began with the disappearance of the Third Kazekage. Sunagakure went to such lengths to find its Kazekage that it provoked intervention from neighboring countries. Konohagakure and Iwagakure eventually began fighting across Kusagakure. It was not until the destruction of the Kannabi Bridge that the war began turning in Konohas favor. Minato Namikaze became a hero during the war and received his nickname, "Konoha's Yellow Flash". Kakashi Hatake, who was promoted to Jnin and gained his Sharingan from Obito Uchiha during the mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge, also gained fame as "Copy Ninja Kakashi". Itachi Uchiha was traumatized by the violence of the war and grew to crave peace at any cost because of it. The rest of his life would be greatly affected by this experience. In Amegakure, Yahiko, Nagato, Konan, and many other shinobi formed a group that fought the rule of Hanz. Hanz called in the assistance of Danz and his Root ANBU, but failed to suppress the group. The confrontation between the two sides did lead to a slaughter of all Amegakure and Root shinobi present, except for Hanz, and to the death of Yahiko. Madara Uchiha created Akatsuki for revenge against the Leaf Village. However, the real creation of Akatsuki is a result of the Ten-Tailed Beast influencing Madara Uchiha through his body in a bid to free itself from the prison created by the Great Sage. In

order to execute his plan Madara Uchiha infiltrated several hidden villages swaying disaffected shinobis to his side with the promise of power. In Amegakure (the Village Hidden in Rain) he supported Hanzo's rise to power, for concessions that would eventual assist in sparking the Third Great Shinobi World War. Later on, in a seemingly chance meeting Madara Uchiha in disguise met Yahiko and suggested the need for a great Alliance that would bring an end to all wars. From Madara Uchihas subtle prompting Akatsuki as born. Madara Uchiha had a dual purpose in creating Akatsuki. Firstly, he wanted to create an organization with a strong group of fighters to exact his revenge on the Leaf when the time came. Secondly, he needed to protect Nagato and be around him. Subsequent, to his resurrection Madara Uchiha was informed by the monks of the flaws created in his body by Orochimaru. Enraged Madara Uchiha was preparing to set out to kill Orochimaru, until he was stopped by the monks who told him that Orochimaru had grown too powerful and in his condition Madara Uchiha would most likely lose. Ostensibly in exchange for their failure with Orochimaru and Madara Uchihas continued patience the monks offered him a secret technique using the Sharingan to access a spirit dimension to regain his strength. Unknown to Madara Uchiha this spirit dimension is a way station between earth and the Ten-Tailed Beasts prision. At this mid-way station the Ten-Tailed Demon managing to slip his shackles a bit can lend his chakra to others but cannot interact with them. In addition to the secret technique, the False Sages explained to Madara Uchiha that given the instability in his body his original eyes containing the awakened Rinnegan could not have been reimplanted for fear of utterly destroying his charka network. As a trade-off, the eyes of a long dead Mangeky Sharingan wielder were implanted instead. However, the monks did reveal an old plan instituted decades before, to promote the development of the Rinnegan, which was still in motion.

The plan called for a suitable descendant of the first son of the Great Sage to have his/her blood corrupt/merged with that of the Uchihas in a dark ritual of sacrifice. This ritual led to the sacrifice of some 100 men, women and children. These killings as well as other political motivations eventually climaxed in the Second Great Shinobi World War. In three generations a perfect vessel was born with the right mix of corrupted blood to perfectly prepare the Rinnegan. This vessel was Nagato. Once implanted the monks promised that Madara Uchiha would be unstoppable and would no longer need to access the spirit realm to replenish himself. However, Madara Uchiha was warned that although his new body possessed cells from the First Hokage, a descendant of the First Son, there would be considerable risks involved in implanting the Rinnegan so soon after his revival. Therefore, there was a need to first prepare his body in order to receive the Rinnegan. A process that would take time. Via Yakiho, Akatsuki was created to provide elite fighters for Madara Uchihas dark purpose and protect Madara Uchihas jewel his prized Rinnegan that was implanted in Nagato. Later on Madara Uchiha joined Akatsuki as another skilled fighter in pursuit of Pains dream of world peace. Fatally, Madara Uchiha was completely deceived. Being the unwitting servant of the Ten-Tailed Beast, Akatsuki real purpose is to achieve the sole objective of collecting all 9 tailed-beasts, destroying the Uzumaki Clan, and spreading fear & chaos, all necessary components in freeing the Ten-Tailed Beast from its jail. As a strong Sharingan user Itachi's eyes made him sensitive to the veil between worlds. By chance, he witnessed Madara Uchiha slipping into the spirit dimension to recharge after battle. Entering near death and emerging fully healed Itachi grew suspicious. Further investigation by Itachi made Madara Uchiha view him as a threat. Although, Itachi was never able to access Madara Uchihas spirit dimension, his sight (though diminished) allowed him to spy on Madara Uchiha's scheming in

that world. Itachi knew of Madara Uchiha's goal for revenge using the Ten-Tailed Beast but he did not know that Madara Uchiha is being used. Itachi also knows that Madara Uchiha has plans to use Sasuke Uchiha as a shield against the threat of Naruto. The power he gave Naruto is an eye jutsu to aid him in overcoming Sasuke's Susanoo. The Fourth Hokage was less than truthful to Naruto, as to why Madara Uchiha attacked the Leaf Village. Months before reports came in that the remnants of the Uzumaki Clan were being systematically exterminated. Although Madara Uchiha came for the fox demon with the intent of destroying the Leaf Village, he also came for Naruto's mother and the unborn child. Both descendants of the great sage, and now the only remaining threat to defeating the Ten-Tailed Beast if it ever gets loose.
