---SECTION ONE--AT RISE In the room are a table and chairs, a couch, small bench or sideboard, and a television set. LUKE is finishing up packing his bags. His MOTHER enters carrying a cake with lighted candles on it, singing a birthday song. HE takes out his camera and snaps a picture of her. SHE places the cake on the table. CANDICE Twenty-one years old. LUKE Yeah. (Pause.) I’m sorry. CANDICE You do what you have to do. LUKE You’ll be all right. CANDICE Oh, I know. I know. (Pause.) LUKE Thanks for the cake. CANDICE Aren’t you going to blow out your candles? LUKE I don’t have to go. I don’t have to do anything, I guess. But now the bags are packed. We have the tickets… CANDICE It’ll be fine, Luke. Make a wish. LUKE We’ll come back. Who knows how long that series will last… CANDICE I understand. LUKE But this is a big break for Regina, and I do have to go with her. CANDICE (Pause.) I know.
LUKE I love her. CANDICE I know. (Pause.) LUKE I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing. I mean, I’m not going out there to do anything, really… CANDICE Lucas… LUKE But, I mean, well, I don’t know what to do, but Barbet says that once I get my own studio out there… CANDICE Luke… LUKE And my own equipment… CANDICE It’s all right… LUKE I’ll have the freedom to— CANDICE Lucas. It’s all right. We’ve been through all of this. We’ll both do what we have to do. I only want what’s best for you. Now make a wish and blow out your candles. LUKE (Pause.) Thank you. CANDICE Happy Birthday. (LUKE blows out the candle and the room goes dark.) ---SECTION TWO--ROGER Cut! (The lights come on. ROGER, the director, is in the room with EDIE, his assistant.) That’s a take. (To CANDICE.) Beautiful, sweetheart. LUKE
come on. (Edie exits. Edie? EDIE Got em. Edie. LUKE . LUKE Mom. you know this guy? ROGER I think we have some explaining to do. sit down. We should talk. have a seat. I’m Roger Crane. Luke. Lucas. LUKE …finally…? ROGER Mark that one down. sit down. Pleasure to finally meet you. (To Candice. come on. why don’t you take five. Come on now. sweetheart.) Who…how did you get in here? ROGER Lucas. ) The situation we have here. . that’s all right. but what I’m telling you is we’ve been filming your entire life for the past twenty-one years and we intend to release it theatrically next Christmas. Lucas—and I’ll be direct because I’m a very direct person—but the situation is: Your life is a feature film. and the reason for that is I am currently working on a long-term project. Maybe you’ve heard of me…? (LUKE looks at him blankly. The concept being that even a normal. who by now has transformed herself and is changing into less motherly clothes.) Luke. (Pause. well. my name is Roger Crane. Lucas.) Do you know these guys? ``` CANDICE Just listen to him. (ROGER laughs. and… (EDIE returns and speaks simultaneously with Roger. I’ll assume you haven’t heard of me because I haven’t released a film in quite a while. you’ve lead a sheltered life.) LUKE Mom…? (HE turns to his MOTHER. EDIE. seriously. what it was was a concept I had way back—that the studio loved and locked into—to film a life as it really happens. LUKE moves away in shock at the sight of her. I’m a director. (HE laughs. LUKE Excuse me? ROGER I know it’s a bit of a shock. Very long-term. ROGER Lucas. Twenty-one years to be exact. laughs too. mundane life can have meaning and…drama.) No? Okay.) I don’t understand.) No. from offstage. no. no. ROGER Well. A film director. EDIE too.5 Mom…where is she going? CANDICE (Referring him to Roger.) ROGER and EDIE …box office potential. please… LUKE (Sits cautiously.
Edie. the role of a lifetime. LUKE This is… ROGER And I might add.) LUKE Now. wait a minute. LUKE Now. is that your “mother” here is actually an actress. signing these papers will make you a wealthy man and allow us to release this film which we all believe very strongly in. wait. (Pause.. Sorry. you know. She’s been an employed actress for the past twenty-one years. for Chrissake. Lucas. So everything she says and does with me is acting? ROGER That’s right. And you can call me Candice if you want. currently has with her… (He holds out his hand. what he’s saying is. wait. no. Luke. but it was in response to an audition notice in Variety.) .] But. who pushes them away.) . LUKE Mom…? CANDICE I’m sorry. et cetera. Mom? Is this a joke or something? What’s going on here? Mom? CANDICE Well. She’s an actress. As you can see you will be very amply compensated for your work—a guaranteed back salary plus a percentage. EDIE places the papers into it. a very capable actress. wait. Now: (ROGER pushes the papers towards LUKE. et cetera.6 ROGER Now: Legal has informed us that we cannot release this film until you sign certain release papers—which my assistant. wait. what it is. Lucas. ---SECTION THREE--ROGER The truth is. But. And I might add. this is just a role for her. Luke.. The woman has had… ROGER and EDIE …more job security than Donahue. He’s the director. et cetera. LUKE I don’t underst… ROGER What I believe is confusing you. I mean. She did give birth to you. regardless. that everyone you’ve ever met or dealt with is an actor.and that you can sign these papers as of the moment you turned twenty-one years old. wait a second. that’s right. If you want I can get you a copy of the script. Barbet? ROGER Yes. In the role of your boss the Famous Photographer—yes. let’s say. LUKE That’s fake? ROGER It’s not fake. in school. at the temp agency… ROGER All actors. LUKE . Lucas. I love that accent he does.7 LUKE I don’t believe you. LUKE And all the guys I knew. LUKE I don’t believe this! LUKE (Looking over the contract. “Okay.) I want you to tell me it’s true. ROGER Hey. kid. That you agreed to all this beforehand. wait. whoever you are—you agreed to this? You would let them take my life for a movie? ROGER It’s not just another movie. now. okay. costs are a factor. LUKE But you agreed to it? Right form the start you said. (Beat. you want me to sign over to you the right to kill me and film it? ROGER That’s a very harsh was of phrasing it. ROGER Edie has a copy of her contract right here.) Please… CANDICE I’m sorry. LUKE Shut up! (To Candice. kid. kid. I needed the work.] LUKE So. Luke. I know actors who’d kill for this part. I’ll bring this person into the world and he’ll only exist to be a part of this production?” Because that’s what you’re telling me. [We’re already over budget. you’ll never die? At least this way you’ll go out a star. LUKE Why would I agree to my own death? ROGER Hey. what do you think that if you don’t sign.12 life.
ROGER I only work with best actors. ROGER Edie. technically. LUKE You…? ROGER Well. It’s a job. Lucas. LUKE (To CANDICE. Roger? It’s acting. I don’t care about the script! Who is he? (Pause.) LUKE I can’t believe I couldn’t tell. LUKE . but when the scene is over. You told me he died before I was born. I’m getting such a headache.) And who’s my father? CANDICE Your father? LUKE Yes. CANDICE That’s what was in the script. (EDIE exits. An actor shouldn’t get too attached to her role. go get her some aspirin. I suppose. LUKE Godammit. kid.13 Everything you’ve ever said to me is a lie. Apparently I was conceived for the sole purpose of this movie. Casting is everything. I’m me again. but I think of this whole project as my baby. Luke. LUKE I can’t believe it… CANDICE Roger. it’s…Jesus.) CANDICE He is. CANDICE It’s not lying. There’s a script…It becomes real to me when it happens.
uh… LUKE No. (Pause.) ---SECTION FIVE--LUKE . Goodbye.) LUKE And now you’re willing to sacrifice your own son for…for…box-office receipts? ROGER Hey! Hey. Case closed. doesn’t it? (EDIE brings aspirin for Candy. what’s so hard about this? I don’t agree to anything that takes my life as the price. we might have to juggle locations.14 You…? ROGER Hey. I’ll start up my photography studio and everything will be fine. My name will be passed on not by children. (LUKE stops. This film will be my legacy! My lasting and selfless contribution to this world in which we live.) LUKE Okay. The only hang-up I had was leaving you behind by yourself. ROGER I understand. I won’t belittle it. it’s pretty simple actually. EDIE exits.) I’m going to get Regina and we’re going to go out to California. I also won’t let you release it. willya? EDIE Check. ROGER Kid. but by my work. I am a serious filmmaker. Call in Regina. ROGER Now wait a second. I do… LUKE (Gathering his bags. I mean. Honestly. wait a second. You’re not who I thought you were. somebody had to get the ball rolling. Seems like only yesterday. But now…I don’t really care.) ROGER Edie. I insist that you do not belittle it. She’ll have her role in that series. Candy. (HE starts to exit. that’s it. kid… LUKE No.

He was living in that dilapidated little green and white house on Grove Street.) Hey. (Pause. We’ll talk when she gets here. kid. Stranger things have happened. even if she started out playing it as a role…Now…now it’s the real thing. listen… LUKE No. (Pause. I think you’re the one that’s been fooled this time. remember back in high school when you were still living in Jersey and you brought the food over to that teacher of yours house. ROGER Kid. You stole the stuff from that gourmet shop you delivered for—working for Jerry. Catalfumo. It was when Catalfumo had just gotten fired. we’re in…we’re in love.) LUKE I mean.15 Regina’s not in on this. ROGER Her name is Jasmine O’Conner. I mean for he most part—garbage. no. God. but really powerful. fine.) LUKE Oh. ROGER Okay. I took one look and said—that’s the one. LUKE You’ll see. whatever you say. You growing up. ROGER Everybody’s in on it. you should see the dailies we’ve had. (Pause.
But you couldn’t tell her the truth. You’ve had to keep the truth to yourself. And when you got there he was drunk. (Pause.) LUKE I remember. ROGER You see. (Beat. now the whole world will be able to see it from your perspective. cried in your arms. That was the last time I ever did that. You held it all inside and you were bruised and you hurt all over… LUKE And that night I cried in my mother’s arms. ROGER That’ll be in there. LUKE I guess so. that old guy had been like a father to you. You didn’t deserve to be beaten and humiliated and fired from your job. but now. LUKE I thought I was all grown up after that. because it’s on film. LUKE We both had temp assignments at the same company. He told them you broke in and he had to defend himself. and you were so ashamed. ROGER And then he called the police on you. It was a good scene. everyone will see that you were just trying to do good. And they brought you home to your mother. It’ll all be in there. Luke. LUKE You remember it? CANDICE Sure. He was sitting alone in that dark little kitchen…And you came up to him…and you handed him the bag…and he beat you with a stick. A story where you’re the hero. As usual.) . That I knew all there was to know. Now you have a chance to tell everyone your story. (Pause. and right from the start it was like we had our own little world. ROGER That’s right.) LUKE (Laughs.17 I bet that was kind of a cute scene. I’ve always been a lousy photographer. ROGER And now everyone will see our story. uh. but yes. It’s a stupid thing to do. control a moment…But I didn’t want to bother with college or nine-to-five or any of that… ROGER I know. yes. LUKE Wow..
LUKE Why would she think that? CANDICE I told her you did. LUKE Regina? ROGER Yes. ROGER Yes. though. LUKE No. That model Barbet uses. The mother. LUKE . What happens is. That you’ve been deceiving her and having an affair with that Maureen. LUKE You told her? CANDICE Yes. LUKE Told her what? CANDICE That you were unfaithful.18 ---SECTION SIX--LUKE And? ROGER I don’t know…I guess you do have to know eventually. Regina does it. LUKE Why? ROGER She thinks you betrayed her. uh. LUKE Does what? ROGER She kills you.
LUKE Who’s “she”? CANDICE The character.And…what else. She’s justifying her own selfishness. CANDICE I do but I still don’t want you to go. you’re going out there to a strange place. I have no relatives. and. The thing is I have no real friends in this city. CANDICE Well she thinks it is. you know.19 Why did you tell her that? CANDICE You mean what was my motivation? LUKE Yes! No…Why did you tell her that? CANDICE Well. no nothing really except for you. I don’t look at it as destroying. I don’t want you to leave with her. stuff like that. whoever. but she’s familiar with loneliness and she doesn’t want to— LUKE And. LUKE How could that be? CANDICE Well. and I figure Regina’s going to dump you once her career as an actress gets going out there.. I mean. I want you to stay here with me. I hate my work. LUKE But none of that’s true.. wait. LUKE But you said you understood. that you’ll never make it on your own as a photographer without my support. LUKE So you tried to destroy the one thing in my life that means anything to me? CANDICE Well she doesn’t look at it as destroying. Or “me”. Regina believed this story? CANDICE . I wouldn’t have even moved in if it wasn’t for you. I look at it as the best thing for both of us. I don’t want to have to find a different life and that’s what’ll have to happen if you leave. no men in my life.
I don’t know what I’m going to do now. or course I do. It’s chilling stuff. I want you to stay here in New York. no hope for the future— LUKE I have Regina. because she knew that I didn’t want you to go and that I was probably just sabotaging the relationship. We shot it last week. who are you? You’re a nobody. yes. But then—and this is where it’s so well-written—then I admitted to her that. I end up ruining all three of our lives because I love you so much. . A non-person. You have no family.) You’ll love that one. But I’m telling her this because I know that you’re just using her for her connections and the money she’ll have. kid— LUKE I know what you told me. no friends. ROGER It was a marvelous scene. Especially if this film doesn’t get released. I leave knowing that she’ll never believe a word you say and will tell you she won’t want you to come with her. listen. It’s so hard to find good scripts. Edie. ROGER (Pause. Roger. If you don’t sign. ROGER comes to LUKE. no genuine past.) I think we my need to see some dailies. EDIE Check. She’s not going to kill me! ROGER Edie! (EDIE enters. ROGER Maybe from the park scene last week. CANDICE The thing is I have no idea she’d go so far as to kill you. And eventually I’m able to sway her and convince her that your love for her isn’t real and she’s totally crushed. CANDICE And so well-written. but I really end up bringing it about. (To Luke. Or maybe that candlelight dinner scene.) Kid. LUKE I don’t care about any dailies. I don’t believe you! Regina is not in on this. ROGER Wonderful stuff. ROGER I told you.20 At first no. and that things like this always end in heartache for everyone et cetera.

JASMINE (Pause. ROGER I know. (A knock comes on the door. Go on tell them. She better not be planning to run away with him. sweetheart— CANDICE I mean. God… JASMINE No. Jas… . I mean…Is he? ROGER Uh. heh.) Is he serious? LUKE Oh. you don’t really think… ROGER Jasmine does have a mind of her own sometimes. LUKE We are going to escape.) LUKE Regina? (Pause.) Regina tell them all the truth. LUKE That’s right. Tell that we really are in love and that we can walk away from all this.) EDIE She’s here. CANDICE Roger. she does. CANDICE I never trusted that girl. the two of us. ---SECTION SEVEN--(JASMINE enters.22 ROGER Relax. JASMINE looks to Roger.
huh? (CANDICE shakes her head. JASMINE Still nothing. I mean.) LUKE Regina! (HE desperately to Jasmine. come on. I suppose. Pause. Well then what’s with him? (SHE goes to Roger. Jas. CANDICE (Flipping through a Variety that she had hidden under the couch seat cushions. God. EDIE We did. ROGER We did. It’s bad enough we’re switching locations.23 JASMINE Edie told me you told him. (To Edie. Fine.) —but I don’t really care about it. Candy. Roger. on the couch. how are you? CANDICE Oh. JASMINE Oh. God… .) That’s what you told me. it’s just some minor details— JASMINE All right then. babe? (SHE kisses Roger and pats him on the rump.) You have any luck? JASMINE I got a call-back for that guest spot I told you about— (CANDICE crushes her Variety. sweetheart.) Hi. CANDICE Oh. SHE goes over to CANDICE. what’s up with this? Don’t you have things under control? ROGER We do.) JASMINE Roger.) How you doing.
) CANDICE I need a job is what I need! I didn’t prepare for this! JASMINE Oh. (EDIE exits. I’m sorry. Don’t you? (CANDICE starts to cry. Twenty-one years of…My personal life is terrible! It’s nonexistent! JASMINE Candice.) Oh. I’ll just relax for a while. I didn’t invest…I don’t know what I’m going to do! JASMINE It’ll be all right… ROGER I’ll make some calls for you… CANDICE This role has been so damn demanding. Candy… (JASMINE comforts her. go get some Pepsi. listen to me. It’s not easy but you’ll find work.) CANDICE I didn’t save. come on. JASMINE Oh. I need a break. LUKE Who are you? JASMINE Excuse me? LUKE I said who are you? I don’t know who you are. talented woman. LUKE So you’re not going to California with me? JASMINE To…? Roger? . that’s what I’m counting on. You’re a strong. I’ve been playing Regina. I mean.24 JASMINE No. I’m Jasmine. And once this film is released you’ll have all kinds of offers. I mean. now. sweetheart… ROGER Edie.
what’s going on? LUKE (Coming toward her. EDIE. LUKE You’re a part of the production. that’s…That’s. JASMINE Really. LUKE I loved you.) ROGER The truth is that both of my girls are wonderful actresses. (CANDICE sobs. (SHE laughs.) EDIE Oh. too.) You lied to me. Candy— LUKE I really thought you loved me. JASMINE Well. JASMINE It’s in the script. uh…Roger. I’m the luckiest director around. Well.25 LUKE You don’t have a part in a television series out there. SHE sets the bottle on the sideboard and brings the cup to Candice. then maybe I’m a better actress than I thought. I wish. ROGER joins in.) ROGER Edie! Where’s that Pepsi? (EDIE enters with a large bottle of Pepsi and a cup of soda for Candice. LUKE I don’t care about the script! You can make your own choices! JASMINE I have a contract . You’ve been lying to me and you knew it from the beginning! JASMINE I’m not against you. JASMINE Ha. You’re going to kill me.
