“Focus on outdoor lighting”
Annetta Kelso

I was recently at the Strategies in Light conference in Milan, listening to a very interesting presentation on the conversion of the English city of Birmingham from HID to LED-based luminaires. It was a compelling story, supported by many facts and figures, as to why LED lighting had been selected as the best solution to replace over 100,000 street lighting fixtures over the next few years. there were some ‘before and after’ photos of local residential areas and it struck me how obvious the improvement in quality of light was with LEDs; from a dingy light with an orange tinge to clear, warm white, bright illumination. the visual transformation alone merited the change, irrespective of the great energy savings story and the long life of the LEDs.

My lighting experience over the last 25 years lies mainly in Indoor commercial lighting, not so much in outdoor lighting. What stuck me was that the visual impact of the LED switch is vastly greater in outdoor lighting. the difference in light quality of an indoor LED lighting installation compared to a conventional fluorescent installation is almost imposible to see, but there is no mistaking the improvement in quality of light in outdoor installations. the rational argument for LEDs extends beyond energy efficiency, for there is also an emotional case to be made. Who wouldn’t want to live in a street with warm white street lighting, evenly illuminating the pavements and road and brilliantly reproducing colours? A street where increased visibility for motorists,

pedestrians and cyclists leads to safer roads; where the ambience is perceived as being brighter and more natural, improving social safety; where the grass and leaves on trees look green and vibrant, instead brown and dull? Is Outdoor lighting ready for the move to LEDs? We have asked many people from different disciplines in the lighting industry; OEMs, specifiers, product managers, quality managers and some end users. now it is your turn. What do you think? Will LEDs replace high pressure sodium today or tomorrow? Cast your votes at www.ledmasterclass.com and join the discussion.
