Running Head : Spanking and Corporal Punishment

Spanking and Corporal Punishment Survey # 1 Calvin Buford SOWK 300 Section 2 Ms.McArthur October 8th 2011

Introduction In contemporary times, the question of how effective corporal punishment really has been a controversial topic amongst Tuskegee students. The following survey queries the relevance and morality of the use of spanking and corporal punishment on children. In the survey, variables such as age, education level, and gender are taken into account in order to reach an unbiased conclusion. Specific questions addressing ones opinion will also be considered within this survey. I predict that males and females who are under 21 will disagree with corporal punishment due to the fact that most of them have not been place in situations where they have the choice to physically punish a child. Alternatively, I predict that older males and females will agree with corporal punishment because they are cognizant of how effective it can be from experience. The variable of education might contort my hypothesis because those with a higher level of education tend to reason with children rather than punish physically.

This pie graph addresses the age range of all one hundred participants of the spanking and corporal punishment survey. As you can see the pie is divided into five different sections. Both female and male respondents were included within this pie graph. Looking closer into the pie graph, ages twentyone and younger were respondents who took the survey the most. Ages twenty one and twenty four was the second most. Age twenty five thru forty stood third in responses, while both remaining ages displayed no response. Observing the pie chart into detail , a total of sixty-seven respondents of ages 21 and under took the survey, which is the most of all age groups. Ages twenty-one thru twenty four had a total of 28 respondents which resulted in the second most for the survey. Ages twenty-five only showed a low of five respondents for the survey, making it last. Both ages 41 thru fifty four and fifty five and over showed no response.

. This pie chart breaks down the different classifications who all took the spanking and corporal punishment survey. Each different color represents a different classification which displays the specific percentage of respondents for each classification. Considering there are more freshman on campus than any classification, they were the most respondents for this survey. Resulting in second were sophomores, then juniors, followed by seniors, leading into graduate students, finishing with vet school students.Paying closer attention to details of the graph, percentages of each classification explains the breakdown of the pie chart. Freshman took nearly half of the surveys, resulting with 48.48 percent surveys taken. Sophomores took roughly one-forth of the surveys resulting in the second most surveys taken. Juniors had a small amount under one forth of responses end result being 16.16 percent of respondents over the total amount of surveys. Considering senio6rs are busy focusing on graduating it seemed as if they werent quite interested in taking the survey which is why they had

only 6.06 percent of total responses. Graduate students actually had more respondents coming in with 8.08 percent , while vet school students only resulted in 1.01 percent.

Men might be considered lazier than females. The survey clearly shows woman outnumbered men in taking the survey by a long shot. Only one survey felt the need to remain confidential and not mark either gender. Woman took nearly seventy-five percent of the surveys. Men only took one-third of the spanking and corporal punishment survey. A larger amount percentage of respondents were clearly women compared to men. Woman who took this test were exactly seventy- four percent overall. Men respondents were not even half of females who took the survey, having only twenty-five percent of respondents. One respondent didnt mark anything for gender.

When the question is asked Do you think it is okay for parents to spank their children, respondents. Seeing that only African Americans usually believe corporal punishment is alright to partake in, more of the responses agreed to use corporal punishment as a means of discipline. Considering woman are the parents who usually participate , they were the ones who chose corporal punishment as being okay more compared to men. Men fell right behind females, agreeing that corporal punishment was okay to use as a means of punishment .Looking deeply into the pie chart, a larger percentage of respondents were women resulting in 51.75%. Men had results of 47.55 percent of respondents of the entire survey. One person felt the need to keep his or her personal gender confidential and not mark any decision, resulting in 1 percent. Overall the results were nearly the same when making the decision for spanking and corporal punishment okay as a means of discipline.

When the question Did your parents spank you as a child many agreed yes to question. African Americans tend to participate in corporal punishment, so this is why majority of the respondents who took the survey answered yes. Location and family beliefs may also play a big role on the decision making of corporal punishment. Only one-fourth of respondents did not have to experience corporal punishment. Looking statistically into this bar graph, seventy one percent of respondents were the ones who led the survey in respondents. Respondents, who chose no, resulted with twenty- four percent. One respondent chose to leave his or her response unavailable which resulted in one percent. Overall more respondents were spanked as a child.

When the question is asked Should parents be allowed to use corporal punishment , once again agreed yes. Considering more females participated in this survey, more women tend to participate in the actual corporal punishment, this affects the results majorly. More than half of respondents chose that corporal punishment should be allowed for parents to participate in. A little less than half of respondents felt spanking and corporal punishment shouldnt be allowed. One respondent chose to not participate in this question and left the answer as blank.

This pie chart addressed the question, Does corporal punishment work better than other disciplinary methods that dont involve physical pain? This is a very opinionated question that is addressed. Many different variables can play a vital role within this question. The results for this question were very close to each other, despite one survey was left unanswered. More respondents felt that corporal punishment will not work better than other disciplinary methods than people who thought it actually worked.

This question addressed the question Have you ever been in trouble with the police? . I would think , more respondents would have felt the need to keep this answer confidential , but not in this case. Corporal punishment can be linked to this question, reasoning that most respondents who received corporal punishment learned from the mistakes they made due to the corporal punishment which was inflicted for their inappropriate behavior. This is why seventy two percent of respondents said they were never in trouble with the police. Twenty six of the respondents have been in trouble with the police. Two surveys felt the need to not answer the question due to personal reasons.

This pie graph addressed the question Overall do you think you deserved the punishment your parents/guardians used on you as a child. This graph shows how the respondents show who felt they deserved or didnt deserve the punishment when they were young. As a child, most children tend to participate in acts which deserve consequences. As that child becomes older they start to accept the reason why they were spanked. This is why sixty-two percent of respondents felt that the punishment they received as a child was ok. Thirty-six percent of respondents felt they didnt deserve the punishment they received. Two respondents felt the need to keep this information to their selves which resulted in two percent in this pie chart.

How likely do you think you will spank your children as means of discipline as means of discipline by age of respondents?

20% 18% 16% 14% Percentage 12% 10% 8% 6% 4% 2% 0% 1 2 3 Scale 4 5 Under 21 21-24 25-40

The following graph shows how respondents considering their age will participate in corporal punishment on a scale from one thru five. With one being very unlikely and five being very likely. The respondents from ages twenty four and under are the majority of respondents who chose to answer the question about how likely do you think you will participate in corporal punishment based on a scale one thru five, measured by age. Most of respondents chose the option three as a means of scaling the chance of participated in corporal punishment. Nineteen percent of respondents from ages twenty one and under chose a neutral number of 3 to consider their selves to participate in corporal punishment. Nine percent of respondents from ages twenty one thru twenty four also chose number three to consider participating in corporal punishment once they have their own children. Only two percent of respondents from ages twenty five thru forty chose number five. Ages 41-54 and 55 and over showed no response as a means of results for this particular question.

This graph provided statistics for the following question Should parents be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline their children based on gender? Based on the information provided, overall, more females answered this question. When comparing yes and no results for the female, more women agreed to the question. Examining the chart for men, it was just about equal but more a few more men felt parents should be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline their children. A total of forty-six females agreed that corporal punishment should be allowed to discipline children. Thirteen males also agreed to this question. Out of the one hundred respondents, both male and female who felt corporal punishment should be allowed totaled with fifty nine response, which is a small amount over half. A total of twenty- eight females agreed that corporal punishment shouldnt be allowed in means of disciplining children. Eleven males also agreed to their opinion of use of corporal punishment shouldnt be allowed. Once adding both male and females who disagreed on corporal punishment, they stood at thirty nine responses total.

By classification of females, how likely do you think you will spank your children as a means of discipline?
14 12 10 Respondents 8 Very unlikely 6 4 2 0 Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior Grad school Vet School Classification Unlikely Maybe Likely Very Likely

This graph displays the results of women from each classification who will spank their children as a means of discipline on a scale of one thru five. Females who were freshman displayed the most results for being very unlikely. I believe they chose this answer due to, their not in a parents specific shoes yet to experience life with a child. Females who chose very likely were also freshman. I believe the ones who chose this answer were the ones who already went thru corporal punishment as a child and feels that it worked for them in the long run in life as a female. Twelve females from the freshman class were the highest amount of females who would very likely spank their children. Five females from the junior class were the highest amount of females who would unlikely spank their children. Eight females out of the freshman class led in the highest amount of the option which they would maybe participate in corporal punishment. Seven females out of the freshman class were also the highest amount who chose to likely spank their children. Lastly, four females also were freshman chose they would very likely participate in corporal punishment.

By classification of males, overall, do you think you deserved the punishment that your parents/guardians used on you when you were a child?

8 7 6 Respondents 5 4 3 2 1 0 Freshman Sophomore Junior Classification Grad. School Yes No

This bar graph explains the male respondents opinions for the question do you think you deserved the punishment that your parents/guardians used on you when you were a child? Considering that males tend to participate in more foolish acts growing up as a child they receive more corporal punishment if their parents believe in it. More freshmen believed they didnt deserve the punishment they received. Sophomores believed they deserved the punishment by a long shot. Juniors also believed they deserved the punishment, while all graduate school students felt they deserved the consequences. Numerically, seven freshmen believed they didnt deserve the punishment, while five felt they did. When looking at the men who felt they did or didnt deserve the punishment, six sophomores believed they did while two believed they didnt. Two junior students believed they deserved the punishment as a child, while only one disagreed. Both graduate students who answered this question felt they deserved the punishment as a child.

Summary and Conclusion The survey project on Spanking and Corporal Punishment was meant to address the different opinions of students from Tuskegee University. Not only were the results very interesting to see, but also revealed many beliefs on a controversial topic. The survey was conducted in a way to gather the respondents opinion, while also finding out background information on the specific respondent. When considering recommendations, questions and specific background should be examined. One of the surveys questions offers under what circumstance for a specific answer, but does not give you an option to explain your circumstance. The question should read Yes, under certain circumstances instead. More students other than Tuskegee University students should also be able to take the survey. Tuskegee University is a HBCU which means all students are African American which means most share the same culture. Providing other races with this survey will offer a better aspect of knowing more opinions on corporal punishment other than one specific race. Overall this was a survey which can be improved in other aspects, but was also a survey that was useful to discover opinions on corporal punishment from Tuskegee University students.
