Background: 2.6 billion dont have access to a safe and hygienic toilet to shit in privacy and with dignity. More than 1 billion people have no form of sanitation at all. They are forced to the indignity of defecating on railroad tracks, in roadside ditches or in other open spaces in and around their communities every day. Resulting diarrheal diseases are killing more than 4,000 children every day thats eight 747s full of children dying needlessly every day. Despite the crucial importance of sanitation and hygiene for health, dignity and social and economic development, these issues are still widely considered taboo and are consequently largely ignored in the mass media, both in developing countries and in developed countries. WASH United harnesses the positive excitement around sport and the involvement of sport stars to get positive, exciting and inspiring stories about sanitation and hygiene in the mass media, thereby fundamentally changing the overall perception of these issues in society. In short: our ambition is to make toilets cool!
