CLYDEBANK crashed to their third defeat in a row despite taking the lead in a match that was a fine advert for Junior football.
The result now leaves Bankies in the relegation zone, with just one win from their opening six games. But during the opening exchanges at Holm Park last Saturday it looked as if Budgie McGhies men would go on to register their first home win of the campaign. They started at a blistering pace and scored a peach of an opener after four minutes when Stevie Dymock volleyed home a perfect Iain Gold cross from the right. Charlie Hobbs should have doubled the lead minutes later when his pace got the better of Chris Merrilees. Unfortunately Hobbs pulled his shot well wide with

just the keeper to beat. But all the good opening play and early lead was cancelled out when John McLay was presented with a shooting opportunity due to lax defending. A simple ball from the back found the Lie midfielder with time and space to fire a spectacular shot in off the underside of the bar. The goal sparked the visitors into life but to be fair to Clydebank they could have gone on to regain the lead before falling behind. Dymock had a close range shot diverted over the bar after he pounced on the keepers fumble from a Tommy Martin shot. Then Hobbs first-time shot from a Darian MacKinnon cut back was blocked by the keeper. But in the minutes approaching half time, the home sides defensive woes continued and they were picked off with two clinical strikes. Again a nothing ball from the back caused the problem that led to the second goal although full marks to

Paul Stewart for a cool finish beyond the advancing Clydebank number one, Robert Hamilton. Stewart added a third two minutes later when he tapped the ball home at the back post to give the Bankies a mountain to climb at the break for the fourth week in a row. The third goal knocked the stuffing out of Clydebank and the second half was mostly a low key affair as the dispirited homesters struggled. Arthurlie added a fourth with a well-placed header by James Marks to make sure of the points. In the closing stages Martin should have scored with a header but his weak effort trickled wide of the target. Bankies did pull a goal back through MacKinnon after a fine pass by Kieran Burns, who has joined the club on a three-month loan deal from Partick Thistle. But it was too little too late and Arthurlie left Holm Park with all three points in what was their first win of the season.

STRIKER Stevie Dallas has left Clydebank to join Central District First Division outfit Greenock. The 36-year-old striker, pictured, had been expected to see out the remainder of his career with the Bankies. But the prospect of first team football at Battery Park saw Dallas put pen to paper last week. The hit man, who scored 18 goals in 41 games for the Holm Park side, impressed Nock boss Stevie Mooney by netting twice in their derby win over Port Glasgow. A permanent move appeared to have been ruled out until the clubs thrashed out an deal this week. The striker took over from Mooney as the captain at Petershill, for whom he scored over 150 goals. And for the past six years the pair have also been workmates. Dallas said: I got a real buzz from my matches at Greenock earlier this season and they helped me get my hunger back for the game.

FOOTBALL FLASHBACK
September 21 1995
CLYDEBANK were left raging after a dubious penalty five minutes from time saw them lose 2-1 to then-First Division title favourites Dundee United. Martin Clark pointed to the spot after Billy McKinlay fell in the box under a challnege from Paul Agnew. Jim Bett gave the Arabs the lead before James Grady levelled. The visitors thought theyd leave Tayside with a point but their hopes were dashed after that late penalty.

McGhie: Clydebank must shore up the back

BANKIES boss Budgie McGhie admitted his troops must adapt to life in the top flight if they have any chance of survival amongst the big boys. The Holm Park gaffer, pictured, watched Stevie Dymock open the scoring but was left frustrated after a first half Arthurlie treble and late finish ended their challenge despite Darian MacKinnon grabbing a consolation. He told Sport Scene: I think it is a similar story as we are great going forward at times but we just cannot defend as we were in a good position and within a matter of minutes we were 3-1 down. Which is always hard to come back from as the heads start going down and I do think that now some of the boys are a little low on confidence. We will not just roll over and we need to obviously keep plugging away and hope it turns soon. At 1-0 Charlie Hobbs should have had

a goal as he has been through and it is a chance to make it 2-0 and these little things are every bit as important as defending. The way we are going at the moment a one goal lead is never going to be enough and then there were other chances in the first half and right through to the last minute. The boys are obviously trying hard but we really need to do better because I do not feel teams are having to work hard to get goals against us. A lot of our conceded goals have either been because they have ran right through the middle of the defence or down the flanks and balls into the middle. It is just basic defending which we need to obviously improve on that and that is what our focus will be in the next few weeks.
