PROLOUGE My life wasn‟t what it was thirty minutes ago. Thirty minutes ago I was the head cheerleader of my school with a hot boyfriend and I had the best friend a girl could have. Now, I‟m a murderer’s girlfriend. I guess I was already a murderer‟s girlfriend when I agreed to be with Carlisle, but I didn‟t know it. That makes all the different to me. He‟s been lying to me ever since then. But of course he was a murderer. How could I not see it? I only started to be haunted by his murderer best friend when I met him. I sighed. It seemed pretty silly now, how blind I‟d been. I guess I just didn‟t want to see it. Everything was too perfect. Damn, I‟m so mad at him right now. So very angry… So why aren‟t I calling the police right now? I don‟t even think I can hurt him like that. Even in his stupid Vanquish. I can so easily put a stone on its gas pedal and let it drive off a cliff…but I won‟t. Why? Because I still love him. It‟s only been thirty minutes.

KATELYN: Three month had passed since I found out about Carlisle. He hadn‟t tried to contact me and I hadn‟t seen him since then either. I spent most of my nights thinking about him and I wasn‟t just getting over him. I finally decided to go out and have some fun. Kira had been calling me since three days after… when I told her that Carlisle and I broke up. I still hadn‟t told her why. So tonight I decided to take her up on her offer to take me to „The Brink‟ to have fun. It wasn‟t as easy as I thought it would be though. I kept thinking that I would see him. I hadn‟t given him back his car yet. I didn‟t know how actually. I didn‟t want to go near that mansion. But I didn‟t drive it. There were only happy memories of what I didn‟t want to remember in that car. It was just parked in our garage, looking so expensive and new. I still couldn‟t drive it off a cliff. “Why can‟t we take the expensive car and look even cooler than we are?” Kira asked. “I don‟t want to talk about it Kira.” “You‟ve been saying that for three months now Katelyn. Why can‟t you just tell me what happened?” “It‟s complicated.” I sighed. “I‟m your best friend; nothing is supposed to be complicated for me. Please, just talk to me. What could have happened between you two that would make you completely stop talking to each other?”
4|Page Katelyn and Carlisle 3
“Look…” I was about to tell her, but I changed my mind; “I just want to have fun tonight okay. “Fine. That‟s what I promised you wasn‟t it?” We walked into the club. Lights flashed everywhere, music, dancing and fun. I could do this. All I needed was to take my mind off of Carlisle. But how could I? This was the place where, just a few months ago, I had one of my greatest memories. My birthday party that Carlisle and our families and friends had thrown for me. As I remembered this the music in the club changed to slow and emotional. The band started playing Eternal Flame, one of my favourite slows, and I had to get out of there. I ran outside, not telling Kira anything…she probably still thought I was behind her. Good. I needed time alone. I ignored the fact that she was my ride home and I started walking away from the club. The further the better. It was kind of cold. Shoot! I left my jacket in the car. Oh well. I just folded my arms and continued walking. I had gotten about a block away when I bumped into someone. I looked up and it was some guy. “Sorry, I wasn‟t watching where I was going.” I apologized. “That‟s okay, I don‟t think any guy would mind if you bumped into them.” He said, and then he smiled. I half smiled back. “Are you lost or something?” “No. I‟m just getting some fresh air from the club.” “Oh…I was just heading there. Do you want me to walk you back?”
5|Page Katelyn and Carlisle 3
I contemplated that for a moment, looking back at the club then down the street. “Uh, I think I‟m gonna just continue my walk.” “Okay but you really shouldn‟t walk in the dark at night. There can be some bad people walking around here. Should I walk with you…you know…to keep you safe?” “I can take care of myself. Besides I barely know you. How do I know that you‟re not one of those bad people?” “Oh where are my manners? My name is Douglas…Doogie for short.” “Do you have a last name?” “Yes, it‟s White. And you‟re name is?” “It‟s Katelyn Chase.” “Okay Katelyn, nice to meet you. I have to go now though. I have someone waiting for me. Actually it‟s more like I‟m looking for him.” “Oh. Who is it? Maybe I know him.” “Maybe…it‟s one of my old friends named Carlisle. Carlisle Woods.” I froze. I couldn‟t catch a break. Even people I just met were talking about him. “I don‟t know him.” I said quickly and I looked down to hide my expression.
6|Page Katelyn and Carlisle 3
“Oh well. Then I‟m off to the club then. You sure you‟ll be alright by yourself?” “Yeah I‟ll be fine.” I smiled. He gave me a half wave and headed for the Brink. I let out a heavy sigh as soon as he was far away. I obviously had to get further away from here to get my mind off of Carlisle. I walked a few more blocks before I found a park bench and sat down. As soon as I did, my phone rang; it was Kira so I answered. “Where are you?” she asked a little panicked. “Relax…I‟m just a few blocks down from the club.” “Why? I thought we‟re supposed to be having fun?” “You seemed to be. It took you long enough to realize that I went AWAL.” “Yeah well the club is pretty loud, not to mention you didn‟t even tell me you were leaving.” I sighed. “I‟m sorry.” She sighed too. “You‟re forgiven as always. Now don‟t move I‟m coming to get you.” She hung up. That night when I got home I fell back into my night routine that started three month ago. Take a bath; brush my teeth and just lay on my bed thinking about Carlisle until I fell asleep. I‟d decided to take his car back to him but I figured that, by morning, I would chicken out.
7|Page Katelyn and Carlisle 3
The next night someone knocked on my door. I expected someone else to get it but the knocking just continued. I walked downstairs quickly wondering why no one answered but they just looked at me like I was hearing things. The person knocked again. I sighed and opened the door. It was Kira. She started pulling me toward the car. “What are you doing Kira?” I asked, annoyed. “We are going back to the club tonight to have fun. And I‟m gonna make sure that you do this time.” She said. “Don‟t forget her jacket!” Mom shouted from the house and threw my jacket for her “Mom!” I protested. “Go have some fun honey” she said “You need it.” I groaned. Kira pushed me into the front seat of her car and quickly ran around to get in the driver‟s side. She didn‟t ask me anything about Carlisle like last night. I appreciated that. The club wasn‟t as bad as last night either. We found a table to sit at and watched the band play. Apparently it was Rock and Roll night, so I had no trouble with the songs. “This is actually fun.” I said. “Yeah it is.” She looking around me. “And that hot guy over there is checking you out.” I eyed her suspiciously and then turned around to see who it was.
8|Page Katelyn and Carlisle 3
“Oh. That‟s Douglas.” I told her. “You know him? How come?” “Well…I kind of met him last night when I took a walk down the street from the club. But don‟t get your hopes up.” “Why not, he seems nice. He could get your mind off Carlisle.” “That‟s just it, he can‟t!” “What do you mean?” “Last night he said he was looking for someone so I said, „Oh. Who is it? Maybe I know him.‟, then he said” I put on a mocking guy voice “„Maybe…it‟s one of my old friends named Carlisle. Carlisle Woods.‟” “No way! But maybe that‟s not so bad.” “I don‟t see how that‟s not so bad.” “Shush…he‟s coming over.” I immediately pressed my lips together. “Hey, it‟s Katelyn right?” he asked. “Uh…yeah, hi.” I answered. “I was just over there wondering if you‟d like to dance.” “I‟m not much of a rock and roll dancer. But maybe my friend here would.” I looked over at Kira.
9|Page Katelyn and Carlisle 3
“Nope. I think you would be better off dancing with Katelyn.” She said smiling. “Okay, well maybe tomorrow night then. I bet they won‟t have rock and roll night twice in one week.” He said to me. “Uh…” “One second please.” Kira blurted, pulling me into a far corner so Doogie wouldn‟t hear us. “What‟s wrong with you? I hope you‟re not thinking of saying no to him.” she whispered in spite of where we were. “Yes Kira, I was. How can I take my mind off of Carlisle with his friend? Isn‟t that strange to you?” “Come on, just one night, it doesn‟t even have to be a date.” I sighed and we went back to Doogie. “Is this some kind of date?” I asked him. “Not if you don‟t want it to be.” “Okay then it not a date, I‟ll see you tomorrow night at eight.” “Great. I‟ll see you then. Goodnight.” He said then he left. Kira was staring at me with a wide grin. I sighed. “I‟ll need you tomorrow evening.” I told her. “Why?”

“Because I‟m going to take Carlisle‟s car back to him and I need you to stop me from bailing.” “Yay! I‟ll definitely be there.” She squealed. At least one of us was excited. ### Kira was right behind me in her car now as I drove Carlisle‟s Vanquish back to his mansion. It was two hours before 8 p.m. I was nervous as hell. How would it be between us now? Awkward? Angry? Sad? Tense? I could only imagine what he would say. We got to his mansion and the gates were already opening. The guards knew the car well and they knew who would be in it. I drove in, up to the main house. When I stopped I could see that Carlisle was already standing there. I took a deep breath and shut off the car, taking the key from the ignition. I got out and then looked back at Kira, who had parked right behind me. She didn‟t get out. “Hello Katelyn.” Carlisle said. At that moment I realized that it was still the most natural, easy action talking to Carlisle as breathing. “I see that you‟ve been expecting me.” I said. “I‟ve had the guards looking out for you since you left me.” He admitted. “Are you okay?” “Yes I am. I‟m just here to give you your car back.” I held out the keys. He grabbed the hand that the keys were in and pulled me closer. I squeaked, not expecting it.

“Are you afraid of me now?” he asked. I didn‟t answer. He sighed. “I‟ll understand if you are.” “I have to go.” I said quickly. The proximity between us was making me feel light headed. I didn‟t want to feel this way for him anymore. I turned and headed for Kira‟s car. “Where are you going?” he asked behind me. “None of your business!” I answered. “She has a date.” Kira shouted to him from her car. “Kira!” I protested. “What?” she asked self-consciously. Carlisle started walking towards me very fast. “A Date! How can you have a date… with which looser?” I stopped and he stood right in front of me. “Does that make you jealous?” I asked. “Yes it does. In fact, it makes me furious. It causes me pain. And I would like to cause him some pain.” “That‟s good; at least you’re finally feeling the pain and not me.” “Katelyn…” his voice got softer “there have not been a second that‟s gone by, since you left me, that I haven‟t felt the pain of losing you.” “Awww!” Kira crooned from the car.
12 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
“I have to go, Carlisle.” I said, quickly running back to Kira‟s car. Kira dropped me off at home, quickly reminding me that we had very limited time to get ready for my „not a date‟. She would be back in a half hour so I went straight upstairs to freshen up. I put on something casual and waited for her to come back. At the club there was the usual mix of music again. I guess Douglas was right; I could dance with him now. Speaking of Douglas, he had just walked in. He came straight over to me and handed me a little pink flower. “Wow, thanks.” I said. “You‟re welcomed.” He said back, and then he took the flower and put it in my hair. “There…perfect.” I blushed. Kira had excused herself as soon as Douglas entered the club. I looked around and spotted her by the pool table and she winked at me. So I guess she wouldn‟t be joining us. “Wanna go get a seat?” I asked. “I thought you‟d never ask.” “So…how long are you in Greendale?” “Not long really. I‟m just here to deliver something to my friend. The guy I told you about the other night.” “Oh. I forgot his name.” no I didn’t “Did you find him yet?”
13 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
All of a sudden Doogie‟s face turned serious. Then he composed himself. “Uh, no, I haven‟t.” “Is something wrong?” “No, I just really need to give him that thing.” “Oh.” I thought about telling him that I knew Carlisle but that would ruin my night. So I just pressed my lips together. “Do you want a drink?” Doogie asked. “Yeah, a can of sprite would be nice.” “Okay, I‟ll be right back.” He got up and went over to the bar. As soon as he got there, Kira came over to my table. “How‟s it going?” she asked excitedly. “It‟s going great actually. He just went to get us some drinks. Where have you been?” “Oh, I‟m just dancing over there.” “You mean over there with those five guys?” She blushed. “Well, a girl‟s got to have fun.” We laughed. I looked over at the bar. Doogie was coming back. She spotted him and quickly went back to her guys. “Here‟s your drink.” He said.
14 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
“Thanks.” He looked over at Kira who was now dancing in the middle of the guy. “She seems to be having fun.” He stated. “Yeah, but we are too.” He smiled. Kira turned around and started pointing toward the door. Both Doogie and I turn to look. Oh crap! Carlisle just walked in…more like burst in…to the club and he was headed straight for us. Douglas stood to greet him but Carlisle‟s face was nowhere near friendly. “Hey, Carlisle, my friend.” Douglas said with open arms. Carlisle ignored the greeting and grabbed him by the throat, slamming him down onto the table. The drinks slashed onto my clothes. “Carlisle!” I protested. “What are you doing?” Kira then came and pulled me away. “Hey, dude, what‟s wrong?” Douglas choked out as he tried to remove Carlisle‟s hand from around his throat. “Stay away from her Doug!” Carlisle shouted and punched him in the face. He rolled off the table and onto the floor, holding his nose that was now bleeding. I went over and stooped down beside him. But not for long because someone grabbed my arm and started pulling me towards the door. It was Carlisle. “Hey!” Kira called after us as she started following.
15 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
“Carlisle stop!” I exclaimed. He said nothing as he continued pulling me. When we got outside Kira grabbed my other arm and started pulling me the other direction. My body felt like it was about to rip into two. Then Carlisle started shaking me until her grip slid off my arm and he pushed me into his car. I was too befuddled from all the shaking to respond before he got into the driver‟s seat. “What were you doing with him?” he asked after a minute of silence as we drove. I didn‟t answer him. I just took my phone out and sent Kira a text saying „I‟m okay. Just go home.‟ “Aren‟t you going to answer me?” he asked again. I still said nothing. He looked over at me, frustrated and took my phone. “Hey!” I retorted. “Oh, so no you‟re talking?” “Give me my phone back!” “What phone?” he growled, throwing it out the window where it dismantled on the sidewalk. “What is wrong with you? I didn‟t know that you were crazy too, I just though murders were your thing.” “And murderers are yours!” he shouted. We pulled into his driveway then and got out of the car at the same time. I was still angry with him but I had no hope of escaping his stupid mansion. CARLISLE:
16 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
We went upstairs to my room. I was calmer now, especially since she wasn‟t near Douglas anymore. Of all the lame idiots in Greendale it had to be him. I was sure that it wasn‟t her fault though; he must have tracked her down. “What did you mean by „murderers are yours‟?” she asked as she sat down on my bed. She took up the Swiss army knife from my bedside table, the last of the collection Paul once stole from me. “I meant Douglas. Couldn‟t you tell by his…” I couldn‟t help but glower while talking about him. “By his what…his cute hair and sweet smile?” “I don‟t care about his hair or his smile,” I growled, disgusted. “I only care about you. I know that he‟s here for a reason. Must be about Paul, he probably knows that I killed him.” “So?” “So, you have to stay here. You are not allowed to leave until Douglas is gone.” “Not allowed? So what; am I kidnapped now?” “Sure, whatever you want to call it, as long as you stay here.” “What about my phone?” “I‟ll have Phil replace it when you‟re allowed to leave.” I said to her as I walked out of the room.
17 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
I got into my Ferrari and started searching for Doug. At least I only had two murderer friends. So after Douglas is gone I will have no worries. ### I‟ve been searching all over Greendale for Douglas for three hours. I guess I could let Katie go home now. I couldn‟t find him anywhere, maybe he left town. I drove back to the mansion and went up to my room. “Katelyn?” I called; no answer. I walked into the second room of my bedroom and up the stairs. “Katelyn?” I called again but still no answer. I wasn‟t one to panic so I went over to the window to think. I knew that she couldn‟t possibly leave the mansion. And there she was; I spotted her in the garden as I looked out of my window. She was staring at the white roses. Even in the bright white garden night light she was beautiful. I took out my cell phone and called Phil. “Yes, sir.” He answered “Phil, would you please escort Ms. Chase up to my room.” “Yes sir, I‟m deeply sorry for letting her leave the room but I couldn‟t stop her, she‟s quite…” “It‟s okay, I know how she gets. Did you register the new phone to her name as I asked before?” “Yes sir, I‟ll have Mary bring it for you now.” “Thank you.” I could almost see him nod as he always did in response. The phone went dead and I turned and continued to stare at Katelyn until he got to her. Then I went
18 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
back down to the second room to put my pocket guns away. I had left the silver one in the car as usual. A few minutes later Katelyn and Phil came and one second after that Mary arrived. Katelyn was smiling at me. Wasn‟t she mad at me anymore? Mary handed me the phone and I nodded at Phil as he left also. “You look less aggressive now than you did before I left.” I told her. “Well, the white roses here are very beautiful, they make me happy.” She stated. “So I see that I got a phone back. Does this mean that I can leave now?” “Yes it does; although I would like to keep you here forever.” She smiled and walked down to the car. We drove in silence as stared at the white rose that I had Mary deliver before we left. I was in deep thought though I probably should have been paying attention to the road. But I couldn‟t help it; I just couldn‟t understand why Douglas had come to Greendale. “Damn it!” I said, slamming my hands down on the steering wheel in frustration, startling her. “Why is he here?” “He said that he needed to give you something.” She murmured, already knowing who I was talking about. “Something? Something like what?” “He didn‟t say what it was but he said that he really needed to give that thing to you.” Okay, so Douglas definitely wanted to kill me. I‟ll have to look for him some more later. We pulled into her driveway. All of the lights in the house were off so I walked her to the door. “I wonder where everyone went. It was already twelve o‟clock.”
19 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
“Uh…do you want to come back to my place? Dark houses are never safe. Especially, when there‟s a murderer in town.” She was just staring at me, saying nothing. She seemed confused my question. “Katie?” “Uh…there‟s a little red dot on your forehead.” Damn it! That sounded familiar. I immediately grabbed her and threw us onto the ground. Where did Doug get a sniper? I pulled her around to the back of the house with me and then took her house keys out of her back pocket. “Hey!” she protested. “Shush” I had no time to be polite. As soon as I got the door open I shoved her in. “Stay low and be quiet.” She nodded and started crawling in through her kitchen and into her living room. I followed closely, locking the back door behind me. We got to the stair which was directly in front of the window near her front door. She stopped and looked at me. I cautioned her not to speak and pointed up the stairs. She nodded again and started crawling. I was still just a few inches behind her. But it was enough to see that when the staircase creaked, a red dot appeared on her back. I pushed her to the side just in time to hear the small cracking noise. There was tiny bullet hole in the place where her back would have been. But that wasn‟t the only place. The hand that I pushed her away with was dripping with blood. The bullet had gone straight through my palm and excruciating pain followed the sight of it. Katie gasped and the red dot returned. I grabbed her, unfortunately with my bloody hand and ran up to her room. “Carlisle, are you okay?” she asked in a whisper.
20 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
“Does it look like I‟m okay.” I whisper through my teeth, waving my injured hand at her, “I need something to wrap around this.” She looked at the yellow shirt that she was wearing and then slid it off. “Here, this already has blood on it.” Then she went to her close to get a vest. As I wrapped the shirt around my palm I realized that that was all I could do. I had no weapon with me. All I could do was hide. Just then, I started hearing glass being shattered. But it wasn‟t coming from inside. I peeped though one of the bedroom windows…carefully… I didn‟t want a hole in my face too. Some more glass shattered and I followed the sound of it to my car. Then I could see tiny dark holes appearing on roof of it. Douglas was shooting my car. I bet he was far enough from us so that if the car exploded he wouldn‟t be affected. But the fact was that Katie and I weren‟t. So I had to find a way to stop him. I headed towards the door but Katie grabbed my hand. “Where are you going?” she whispered urgently. “I have to go stop Douglas from shooting the car.” “You‟re risking your life to save your car?” “No, I‟m risking my life to save you. You see this?” I pointed to my palm with the bullet hole. “This hurts like hell but it was the best decision I ever made because I did it to save you. So just listen to me. Stay under the bed and don‟t move until your parent get home.” She was about to protest but I opened the door and slid into the hall. “Lock the door.” I was a little afraid to walk down the stairs but I had to. I opened the front door knowing that I may never see Katelyn again and waited for the red dot to
21 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
appear. But, of course I wouldn‟t see it coming. Suddenly my phone rang and my heart skipped a beat. I answered. “Hello.” “What‟s wrong Carlisle? Are you afraid of little old me?” Douglas asked through the phone. “Why are you doing this here? If you want to kill me, you know where I live.” “You‟re mistaken old friend, I don‟t only want to kill you; I want to kill her too.” “You‟re gonna kill her in her own house?” “Why not? You killed Doug in his. “I did what I had to do to protect her.” “And I‟m doing what I have to so I can avenge Paul. He was always there for me.” “The last time I saw you, you were running away from him. “It was a complicated relationship. I have a clear shot at your girl right now and nothing is stopping me from taking it but this conversation.” I looked up at Katelyn‟s window; she was looking down at me, a red dot on her forehead. “Wait! I‟ll do anything, please, just don‟t take that shot.” There was no response for a moment. “Doug?”
22 | P a g e K a t e l y n a n d C a r l i s l e 3
“I want you in jail.” He stated. “What?” I asked in confusion. “You said anything. I want you to confess to killing Paul and go to jail. Then I‟ll leave your girl alone.” “How could I make sure that you would?” “I‟m coming with you. I‟m tired of this game Carlisle. It‟s just a matter of time before we‟re both dead anyway. I‟m doing you a favor here, take it or I‟ll take the shot.” Well I‟ve done it. I‟ve protected Katelyn from my „friends‟. “Okay Doug, I‟ll do it. Should I make the call or should you.” “I‟ll do it.” He said then the phone went dead and the red dot disappeared from Katie‟s forehead.

Juvi wasn‟t like I thought it would be. Most of the guys in here were scrawny; held for small robberies or selling drugs. But I kept to myself anyway. The yard was dusty and the sun was scorching. The wooden benches and tables were full of chips and splinters but I sat at them…remembering. I hadn‟t had the guts to call Katelyn that night to say goodbye. She stared at me through her window and soon enough she was the one calling me. I had taken a deep breath and answered. “Hey.” My voice was strained. “What‟s going on? What are you doing down there?” she asked. “I‟m waiting.” “On what?” That was when I had to explain to her. She argued with me and I argued back. She couldn‟t change my mind though; of course not… I did it for her. I knew that this day was coming anyway. She had run down stairs after I hung up on her, I was fed up of arguing. She didn‟t even seem to care that Douglas could kill the both of us and save himself. She held me close for a few minutes until the police came and she didn‟t let go until one of them dragged me away. My fist came down hard on the dusty wooden table where I was sitting now. I never wanted her to see me like that. And now, to think that Paul would have tried to kill me in here if this happened earlier. That would have been fun; or at least better than sitting here all day. My parents couldn‟t believe their ears when they heard the news. I suspect that I‟ll walk free soon. They hired the best and most expensive lawyer to prove

that even I was lying. I had confessed to everything in the interrogation room, what could they do about that? I‟m sure they‟ll find a way. And if they do, I plan to start a great life somewhere in Europe. A piercing bell rang and I looked over to where Douglas was sitting. We both sighed. We were unfortunate enough to be stuck in the same holding cell. I looked around one more time at the filth and dust surrounding me and headed inside. THE END
