Using Flow Map Planning for: “ Write from the Beginning”
Revising is when you take your rough draft and turn it into a “work of art”. When you wrote your rough draft you were just getting your ideas down on paper. (like a blue print or sketch for building a house) Now it is time to build the house!
First: check your opening and closing paragraphs to see if they match your original flow map checked and approved by the teacher. Make changes and notations on your rough draft in a way that you can understand and read.
1._____Read your paper to your partner – add or remove words or sentences where it does not make sense or needs to be explained better. 2._____Have your partner read your paper to you. – listen carefully to see if: it makes sense sounds interesting it needs more details or explaining something should be removed 3._____Do your three body paragraphs tell exactly what you want your reader to know? Did you add enough detail and explanation so that they can feel like they understand your experience? Read it to someone and ask them if they understand and can picture it.
4._____Read each sentence starting from the end. This is to see if each sentence is complete by itself. You should combine short choppy sentences. There should be some, but not many. No really long sentences that ramble on. If a sentence can be divided up into smaller sentences, make sure they are connected by conjunctions and commas or they will be run-ons. Conjunctions: and, but, for, nor, yet, so, etc. If your paper seems to jumbled and crowded, rewrite with these changes on a new sheet of paper and skip lines.
5._____Read through again and see if you can read it easily after the changes.
Now it is time to decorate the house with some charming “extras”
6._____Change some boring words to better words. (cool, awesome, fun, happy, really, stuff, things) Use a thesaurus or a word list if you need to. 7._____Change your nouns to names of people, places or things: examples
➢ ➢ toy car = Hot Wheel car = Toyota Camry wooden box = cedar chest store = Fry’s teacher = Mrs. Ursini
8._____Check to see if each of the 3 middle paragraphs start with a “transition word or phrase” (to begin with, finally, etc.) DO NOT USE: first, next, or last 9._____First word count. (makea list of all the words you began each sentence with. If you used one more than once, then put a checkmark next to the word instead of writing it again.) Don’t use the same word more than 2-3 times if possible) Also use some time/order words within your paragraphs if needed (later, next, meanwhile)
Who did you revise with? __________________________________________________________ Rewrite your paper and skip lines.
