But what are the long term effects of this sort of eye strain? And what can we do to avoid the need to wear glasses or contact lenses to correct our failing sight? Our eyesight is the most important of our senses. However. Neuroscientists currently believe that about 2/3 of our entire brain activity is associated with seeing and interpreting what we see. A large percent of those same people will not be able to see clearly at all without some sort of visual correction.5Perfect Vision Method Introduction We all rely on good clear vision for nearly every one of our daily tasks. According to studies made. we often write it off as getting old or say that our eyes are tired. So how do we know if our eyes are healthy? Most of us suffer from tired eyes. when our eyesight begins to deteriorate. Billions will have to wear glasses or use contact lenses to do everyday activities like reading. watching television or driving. This means that the other half suffers from some sort of defect in their vision. But are these indications of poor visual fitness or do we merely need to rest our eyes? 5 Chapter: Conclusion . usually after straining them to read or look at small details over a long time. only about half of the world’s population has little or no vision problems.

A lessening of the acuity with which we see can be an indication of changes in our eyes that indicate underlying problems with our eye health that can be improved by treatment. Using eyeglasses or contact lenses change the way that light enters the eye to compensate for the incorrect focus. different conditions of the eye require different kinds of lenses. Furthermore. changes occur in the eye as we get older. This obviously is only treating the symptoms while leaving the underlying condition unaffected. Forcing our eyes to see clearly can cause a permanent strain on our vision that can become a permanent astigmatism over time. The most common way to deal with vision problems is to correct the error of refraction inside the eye. Usually. light conditions or just plain old overuse. . But many things can affect the way that we see such as stress. And then this is carefully focused onto the retina where the image can be translated for the brain. It is also often the case that some people may suffer from a degree of both shortsightedness and farsightedness.6Perfect Vision Method Most of us won’t even worry about our visual fitness until we are struggling to read something or straining to see something at a distance. Tiny changes in the size or shape of the eye can alter the way that it focuses the light. Chapter: Conclusion 6 The amazing structure of our eyes is a very delicate mechanism that allows just the right amount of light to enter the pupil. our emotional state. Consequently. This causes errors in refraction that lie at the base of nearly all vision problems.

7Perfect Vision Method they will need complex compound lenses to compensate for it. massage or color healing. While we do those simple everyday tasks that put so much stress on our eyes and damage our eyesight. There are also a number of things that people who already wear glasses can do in order to wean themselves off of having to use spectacles. But the restrictions and embarrassment of corrective eyewear often make glasses or contacts undesirable or impractical. it is the sense that we rely upon the most in our day to day lives. Through the use of these simple exercises and by creating new good habits with our vision. the resort to expensive surgical procedures. It is possible though to improve your vision without having to resort to glasses or contact lenses. herbs. a number of eye conditions that cause visual Chapter: Conclusion 7 . This means that glasses really do nothing to improve visual acuity at all and they may actually make existing conditions worse. It is by using a few very simple exercise techniques such as homeopathy. All of us would like to enjoy good eyesight. The therapies outlined in this book have been developed and practiced for nearly one hundred years. acupuncture. in more extreme cases. iridology. The aim is to eliminate the need for the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses or. It is also possible to lessen the strain and possible damage that can occur by following a few simple steps. Many of which are simply common sense like reading with a proper amount of light or not watching the television in a dark room.

It can be affected by a variety of medical conditions or simply as part of the ageing process. It is to indicate the range of the eye’s ability to see clearly. we are all putting a strain on our eyesight. And we start to wonder how healthy our eyes really are. Chapter: Conclusion 8 How healthy are your Eyes? We all use our eyes all day every day without ever really giving it much thought until we come across some small type that we can’t read or fail to recognize a familiar face in the distance. Clarity of vision is determined by many physical factors in the eye that all relate to the general condition and health of our eyes. driving and watching television. Generally our visual acuity is defined by a number like 20/20. The . Chapter I: Vision Fitness Defined Vision fitness is a measure of how well our eyes function in the various things that we do every day like reading. A return to good vision without glasses is possible. With the amount of reading and screen watching time that most of us do every day.8Perfect Vision Method problems can be alleviated and even reversed. But it is the physical condition and shape of the eye that bears on its visual fitness more than any other factor.

farsightedness or hypermetropia. The Effect of Ageing on Eyesight The ageing process changes our eyes and alters our eyesight as well. This everyday strain is just one contributing factor to the condition of our eyes but it is an important one. over time. This affects how we see things either close up or far away depending on the way that the eye has changed. And yet we rarely see an ophthalmologist to test the health of our eyes. called myopia. And so we begin to see less clearly. we gradually develop problems with our eyesight. These problems are called refractive disorders and include nearsightedness. The eyes’ ability to focus over set distances is also tested to determine how much visual acuity someone has. affects our eyesight and the overall health of our eyes. Chapter: Conclusion 9 Common Visual Problems and Eye Defects Because our eyes change their size and shape over time for a number of reasons. As we get older the strain that we habitually put on our eyes and the ageing process itself combine to cause the eye to change its shape. ophthalmologists look into the eye and examine the lens and the retina. Most people. It no longer causes light rays to converge on the retina which is called . especially over the age of 40.9Perfect Vision Method strain. Generally. should have their eyes examined and their eyesight tested every couple of years. Another refractive disorder is when the lens has changed shape.

10Perfect Vision Method astigmatism. It is the most 10 Chapter: Conclusion . Other Eye Defects and Conditions Other eye defects such as glaucoma affect the internal pressure of the eyeball. has many associated risks. Ophthalmologists check this pressure to determine the physical health of the eye. This is a form of long sightedness. Currently the mainstream cure for cataracts is to remove them surgically which. Usually there are prescribing medications to treat the disease and to rectify deteriorating eyesight. There are other disorders of the eye but these are the ones most commonly treated with spectacles. Both of these conditions are held to degenerate over time as the eye strains to focus and this can cause permanent changes to vision. And hypermetropia is the opposite with the length of the eye from front to back being too long. Some disorders of the eye will affect eyesight. In extreme cases. our lens may become less flexible and so less able to focus correctly on objects that are up close and this is called presbyopia. In addition. It is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye due mainly to an over exposure to strong or bright light. Even the more serious eye problems can be treated with natural therapies. as we age. blindness can result. Another common eye problem is cataracts. of course. often dramatically. But most commonly people suffer with problems with their vision because the shape of the eye has changed permanently over time and changed the focus of the lens. Myopia is an instance of the distance from the front to the back of the eyeball being too short making it difficult to focus close up.

such as an atrophied optic nerve or damage to the lens or the retina. pain or discomfort. This may result in imperfect refraction making our vision blurry and which can continue for some time. hypermetropia or astigmatism have periods in every day when their eyesight is normal even though they normally suffer from impairment. depression and other forms of stress. Even people with myopia. . illness. Refraction is variable throughout our lives and even throughout the day. The Triggers of Variable Refraction Things that may trigger variable refraction in even normal eyes are sudden or loud noises. The main cause of vision problems though is imperfect refraction of the light entering the eye. What Causes Vision Problems Chapter: Conclusion 11 There are many causes of problems with vision that result from physical damage or deformity of the eye. Imperfect refraction also occurs whenever we look at something unfamiliar such as foreign texts.11Perfect Vision Method common visual impairments that we can all work on improving the most easily without having to resort to glasses once we are aware of their causes. Our focus will generally shift causing further fatigue which sometimes results in headaches or neck pain. Another common cause of vision problems is the sudden or rapid changes of light.

This strain is predominantly a strain of the mind rather than of physical eye. Chapter: Conclusion 12 Common Treatments for Poor Eyesight Most people who have problems with their eyesight will usually visit the ophthalmologist who will prescribe glasses to correct their vision. it is most commonly caused by straining to see at long distance. This makes distant objects more difficult to see clearly. . Even in a normal eye. When the mind relaxes and allows the eye to refocus. the opposite is true and their strain comes from trying to see close up objects like print or fine details. or alternatively trying to see at a distance while driving. for instance. It is this constant mental straining to read or focus on a screen. there is the option of contact lenses. that causes the long term degeneration of eyesight in the modern day. The cause of this need to strain is based in our concentration. the error of refraction disappears too. Whereas for hypermetropic people.12Perfect Vision Method The real cause of these effects is the strain that is put on the eye by the external muscles of the eyeball when we force the eye to focus. It requires more effort to keep focused on things that we do not wish to look at closely such as long columns of figures as opposed to concentrating on things that we enjoy and find relaxing such as reading a magazine or a novel. In myopic people. For those people that don’t like the look of glasses. straining to focus on close up objects can produce a temporary astigmatism.

we can have not only healthy eyes but good clear vision without the need for glasses. there has also been the option for many people of having the shape of their eyes altered by laser surgery. It is by using natural techniques and simple relaxation exercises to return our eyes to a state of relaxation that allows for the greatest visual acuity. 13 Chapter: Conclusion . But this is very expensive and comes with its inherent risks.13Perfect Vision Method And in recent years. Good eye health is about more than clear vision but to achieve it we should take care of our eyes. More and more people are looking for an alternative therapy designed to strengthen their eyesight. And to maintain it we need to develop good eyesight habits. When we can learn to use our eyes instead of abusing them.

14Perfect Vision Method Chapter II: How Your Eyes Work: A Look at Your Eyes’ Mind 14 Chapter: Conclusion .

the colored part of the eye.15Perfect Vision Method Our eyes work without any conscious effort.the sclera or the white part of the eye. the cornea which is the clear bulging part at the front of the eye and the pupil which is the hole through which the light passes. 15 Chapter: Conclusion . Understanding how light is handled by the eye and how it operates to focus on objects clearly helps us to understand what has gone wrong when our vision begins to deteriorate. It is also important to think about how our environment and our basic everyday activities and even our emotions affect the acuity with which we see. The images that we see are translated into nerve impulses. This process is thought to take up the majority of the brain’s function making eyesight the most used and most complex of the five senses. behind which is the lens where the light is finally focused onto the retina at the rear of the eye. In the middle of the Retina is the macula with the fovea at its center where we have our greatest visual acuity. They are converted in the occipital lobes at the back of the brain into the images that we see. Eye Structure Our eyes are an amazing part of our anatomy that is made from adapted brain cells that have evolved into the several complex parts that make up our organs of vision. The eye is composed of ten main parts . Surrounding the pupil is the iris. it is a good idea to look at how the eye is put together and learn a bit about what its various parts do. In order to understand how our vision works and how it may deteriorate. so most of us will never have given much thought to their structure or to how they actually see.

All of the light that enters it from a distance is focused behind the retina instead of upon it. Over time this strain on the eyes causes the lens to become more permanently out of shape increasing the shortsightedness of the person. It is achieved by the eye changing its shape by altering the thickness of the lens. In shortsighted eyes. for people who are nearsighted have the opposite problem with the shape of their eyes. Conversely.16Perfect Vision Method Behind the retina is the optic nerve that is a bundle of more than a million nerve fibers which carry the messages from the retina to the brain. In a normally functioning eye. Inside of the eyeball is a gel called the vitreous humor which maintains the shape of the eye and assists with refraction of the light that enters it. When someone is longsighted. Focus and Function The process by which the eye adjusts itself to focus at different distances is called accommodation. . Chapter: Conclusion 16 The lens is caused to be more or less permanently convex in shape. the ciliary muscles contract to focus on things that are up close and relax to allow the eye to focus on more distant objects. They are too long from front to back causing the light from the lens to focus in front of the retina making the vision blurry. the eye is too short from front to back. this muscle is thought to be constantly contracted.

explaining why as we age our long-sightedness may often improve. about 2/3 of the focusing is done. That causes the lens to become either thinner or thicker and which gives our vision its finest focus. for a short time at least. The eye does much the same thing. allowing light to pass through itself in such a way that it is focused on the retina. It results in astigmatism. At this point. or sometimes correcting. The image on the retina is then converted by the eye into rods and cones that can be read by the brain. The light next passes through the pupil where the iris. The easiest way to understand how the eye works is to compare it to a film camera.17Perfect Vision Method In young people. As we age. The final focus is then achieved as the light passes through the lens inside the eye before the image is focused on the retina at the back of the eye. opens or closes to adjust the amount of light that is allowed to pass through it. When light first enters the eye it passes through the cornea which is the equivalent of the lens in the camera. It is also elastic making it able to accommodate the light that enters it very easily without creating much variable refraction. the colored part of our eyes. 17 Chapter: Conclusion . The shape of the lens is adjusted by the tensing or relaxing of the ciliary muscles of the eye. the lens becomes harder. and sometimes may become asymmetrical causing variable refraction of the light that passes through it. the lens itself is almost perfectly symmetrical. Light enters the lens of the camera which focuses it to create a visual image on film. It is where the visual image is reconstructed as sight. a preexisting condition. losing its elasticity.

18Perfect Vision Method Effects of Feeling on Vision All of us have experienced those frustrating moments when we are angry or upset. Longer term emotions also have an effect on our eyesight. some cause our pupils to dilate. We need to be more relaxed. Obviously in order to improve our vision we have to consider changing our behavior. When we are relaxed. others. In extreme instances such as when we are in a panic. When we relax our vision clears and we don’t need to strain to read because our eyes are no longer being over exerted. such as fear or surprise. Different emotions will have a different effect on our eyesight. not only unable to concentrate but also unable to focus on small details. we may get tunnel vision. And if we are constantly agitated or depressed it will be reflected in how we actually see. a normal eye possesses perfect vision because the act of just seeing requires no effort. so that we can take the strain off of our eyes that is causing the vision problems. Chapter: Conclusion 18 . causing us to strain our eyes to see and so increasing our stress levels even more. do the opposite in order to focus on things more sharply until our perceived danger has passed. But it is stress that is seen as being the single greatest influence on our eyesight.

It is well known that different colors have differing emotion effects on the viewer.19Perfect Vision Method Effects of Everyday Life on Vision We all have experienced the feeling of having tired eyes. how much more of a strain is it to spend hours looking at a television or computer screen? So many simple daily activities such as driving cause a similar stress on our eyesight everyday making us squint and strain in order to see our way through the simplest tasks. Some colors such as bright lemon yellow cause fatiguing for the eye. 19 Chapter: Conclusion . In the modern world. Our eyes are almost never at rest when we are awake. This is because more light is reflected from these bright colors which cause an excessive stimulation of the eyes. we are constantly using and sometimes abusing them without giving it much thought. perhaps after a day of driving or reading closely printed or very small print text. If that is the case with simple blocks of bright colors.

But only a little bit of thought on the subject will show that glasses or contacts do nothing other than adjust the problem and in some cases may make it worse. It is tailor made to correct a person’s vision problems. Contact Lenses and Prescriptions When most of us develop problems with our eyesight we will end up either wearing glasses or contact lenses. Different conditions will require different kinds of lenses or different strength prescriptions. People think that glasses will fix their eyesight. . We all had fun by trying on someone else’s glasses and for a moment wondered how it must be to have to use spectacles to see. or in some cases having surgery to correct the defect.20Perfect Vision Method Chapter III: Understanding Glasses. Chapter: Conclusion 20 Types of Lenses The typical design of eyeglasses consists of a frame that holds lenses in front of the eyes. The main difference between different kinds of glasses besides the aesthetic ones of frame style is the lenses that are used. Most of us will have to pay for expensive prescription lenses if we choose to wear glasses. And there are a few kinds of lenses that are most commonly used. It is unlikely that grabbing a pair of readymade reading glasses will improve someone’s vision very much at all. But most of us know very little about how any of these methods for correcting vision actually work.

And the bottom half is used for close up vision such as reading. They are basically used to correct eyesight allowing for a much larger area of the lens to be used. And this division causes a distortion of vision. The third style of lens compensates for this by making a gradual change between the parts of the lens. One disadvantage of these traditional styles of lens is that there is a dividing line between the different focal lengths of the lens. The top of the lens is used for distance vision like watching television. It is to compensate for impaired vision either close up or distance vision depending upon where the wearer is looking. More complicated vision problems are resolved using multifocal lenses. It is generally used to correct problems with distance vision.21Perfect Vision Method The most basic lenses are called single vision. Lenses are most commonly spherical in shape. These lenses are made so that different parts of the lens create different focal lengths in the eye. Bifocal lenses are divided across the middle. trifocal and progressive lenses. But some vision impairment aspheric lenses have differing degrees of curvature over their surface. Trifocal lenses add a third division in the lens that adjusts for vision over intermediate distances. It allows a smooth transition from our distance and our near vision. These lenses come in three basic types. 21 Chapter: Conclusion . bifocal.

They can also be produced in various colored tints. They gave excellent optics. can be photochromatic so that they change color in different light conditions. UV resistant or scratch resistant coatings. Most commonly used is polycarbonate which has the advantage of being tough. It allows the lenses to be thinner and lighter. The increase in the number of plastics available in recent years has seen a shift away from using glass for lenses to a number of different plastics. Even lighter are the high index plastic lenses which are used specifically in high prescription lenses to keep their thickness and weight to a minimum. but with several drawbacks. it gives better vision than the older style of plastic lenses. But thick glass lenses such as those used in high prescriptions can also be heavy and uncomfortable to wear. It is mainly due to a number of things such as their angle in relation to a light source causing them to produce glare which obscures good vision and may even be harmful to the eye. Glass lenses can also cause light to refract in unexpected ways. reasonably scratch resistant and light.22Perfect Vision Method Materials for Lenses Originally. And in some instances. Newer materials such a trivex are even lighter and stronger than polycarbonate lenses. Most obviously glass lenses are easily broken which can be dangerous. 22 Chapter: Conclusion . or they may even be polarized to reduce eye strain from glare by allowing only parallel light rays to pass through them. These types of lenses can also be given different treatments like antireflective. the lenses used in eyeglasses were made from glass.

It is placed on a white background and which we are asked to look at during a standard eye test. usually E.23Perfect Vision Method Visual Acuity Visual acuity is a measure of the quality of vision or how well a person sees and relates to the acuteness or clarity of our vision. . They are arranged in lines which get progressively smaller and have more characters per line. Chapter: Conclusion 23 20/20 Vision Explained The most commonly known measure of visual acuity is the 20/20 rating (which is also often called 6/6 vision in countries that use the metric system). some replacing the letters with pictures or colored circles. There are a variety of eye test charts used. But few people actually know what these figures relate to. But the most commonly used is the greatest possible contrast between foreground and background. H or N. The most common test of visual acuity is done using the Snellen chart. It is the classic page of capital black block letters. The person is asked to read the chart. The person being tested is made to stand at a standard distance of 20 feet (6 meters). progressing through characters as they incrementally decrease in size until the limits of clear vision is established.

24Perfect Vision Method

The first figure indicates the distance of the object from the eye. In this case, 20 feet (or 6 meters) and the second figure relates the visual acuity ratio. This means that the less this second number is, the greater the visual acuity is over distance. And the greater that this second number is, the poorer our visual acuity is over the same distance.
Chapter: Conclusion 24

Thus a person with 20/15 visual acuity would see the same object clearly at 40 feet away as a person with 20/20 vision would see at 30 feet and as someone with 20/30 vision would see at 20 feet. 20/20 vision isn’t perfect vision, as we mistakenly believe, but rather an average acuity for eyesight generally. Other than distance acuity we also have near vision acuity that is measured in much the same way except that the distance from the eye to the test chart is less, about 16 inches (40 cm) but the same principals apply.

Visual Acuity and Nearsightedness or Farsightedness
Taking 20/20 as an average for good vision it follows that a person with 20/15 vision will see best at a distance and so we call them farsighted. Conversely, someone with a visual acuity of 20/40 will see things much better closer up and so they are called nearsighted. Whilst it is not always the case, farsighted people tend to have more problems with close up vision just as near sighted people often struggle to see things at a distance.

25Perfect Vision Method

The Problem with Glasses and Contact Lenses
Because all of the problems that we have result from errors of refraction of light in the eye, the most common treatment available is to correct that refraction with eyeglasses or contact lenses. While this may go a long way to giving us clearer vision, it does nothing to treat the underlying cause of the problem. In fact, it may create more problems than it set out to cure. Glasses don’t improve our vision but instead change the focus of the light as it enters the eye to create an illusion of clear sight. There are several side effects that this causes such as decreasing our perception of colors resulting in artificial color blindness. Everyone who wears glasses will have had the experience at one time or another of taking off their spectacles in order to do color related tasks such as comparing color swatches. Another, more serious problem, is that glasses are designed to compensate for a specific refractive error in the eye. But as visual acuity changes with varying light conditions and at different times of the day, this tends to force the eye to create the defect in itself that the glasses are made to correct. This constant straining or adjusting of the focal length to suit the glasses will over time cause the condition to worsen. And so, in turn, will require a new and perhaps stronger prescription to correct.
25

Chapter: Conclusion

26Perfect Vision Method

Often, people with presbyopia who wear glasses to see very fine print, find that over time they can no longer read larger sized type that they could easily read before using glasses. It is also common that when someone goes without using eyeglasses for a short time, for instance when they have been lost or damaged, that there is often an improvement in their eyesight generally. Another difficulty that may arise to people who use glasses is that their eyes have to get used to wearing them. And in some cases, especially where a high prescription is being used, the eye never becomes fully accustomed to the correction of the glasses. In turn, it creates a different kind of vision problem altogether. Even the difference between wearing glasses during the day and at night, and going from indoor lighting to outdoor lighting may affect the way that glasses work. People are often told to accustom themselves to a new set of spectacles at home in familiar surroundings before venturing out. This is to lessen the risk of taking a misstep or having an accident. It is a fact that any form of glasses restricts the field of vision of the wearer. To function correctly, the focus must be directed through the center of the lenses. Looking through the sides of the lenses will always distort the images seen. And so our peripheral vision is necessarily reduced by glasses which can also be dangerous when doing things like driving or playing sport as it increases our blind spots.

Chapter: Conclusion

Like glasses.27Perfect Vision Method Other factors that can decrease our vision through glasses can be a difficulty in keeping them clean or clear while engaged in some activities. Contact lenses were once made from polymethyl methacrylate (or PMMA). Hence. soft contact lenses are made from silicone hydrogels which have the advantage of allowing oxygen to pass through them to the cornea. Contact lenses. among them is the expense as they have a limited life and need regular replacement. in order to correct its refractive errors. Many people find it difficult to apply the contact lenses to their eyes or find them uncomfortable. These rigid contact lenses are still used. Chapter: Conclusion 27 Laser Vision Surgery . like glasses also have a limiting effect on the field of vision because their best focus is achieved by looking straight through them. they can be worn for longer periods. contact lenses don’t treat the actual defect of the eye and they merely treat the symptom. But more commonly. Contact lenses have many drawbacks. What are Contact Lenses? Contact lenses work in the same way as glasses. the outer lens of the eye. But they are placed directly onto the cornea. These activities can generally increase our stress levels and so produce more eye strain than is usual.

Both glasses and contact lenses can be very expensive and. Chapter: Conclusion 28 This procedure is very invasive and comes with its own risks. It may also cause the eyes to dry out or to become more sensitive to glare. they can be fragile and easily broken or . especially in the case of glasses. the commonest of which is either over or under correction of the problem. But is at best stopgap measure to make up for an underlying condition of the eye which goes untreated. A small flap is cut in the covering of the cornea with a laser and then the cornea underneath it is sculpted into the correct shape by another laser before the flap is replaced and the eye is left to heal. people are embarrassed to wear spectacles or find them uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. The other main drawback with Laser Eye Surgery is that not everyone with visual problems can be treated with this therapy.28Perfect Vision Method For a number of people there is the option of having laser surgery. Contact lenses have the advantage of being invisible but have the drawbacks that they can be uncomfortable and difficult to apply. As well as the usual risks of infection that comes with any sort of surgical procedure. just as any surgery. Often. The Problems with Mainstream Solutions to Vision Problems Glasses and contact lenses are not the simple solution to poor eyesight as has been shown. It is to correct the shape of the cornea and so to treat the error of refraction in their eyes.

29 Chapter: Conclusion . Given these facts it certainly makes good sense to look for alternatives to these traditional solutions to a problem that affects half of the people in the world. Contact lenses in particular are easily lost and if not treated properly can introduce infections or irritations into the eye.29Perfect Vision Method misplaced.

Shifting can even benefit eyes with normal vision. a process known as accommodation. which teaches your eyes this specialized motion. Your eyes will better listen to what your brain is willing them to do. and increased flexibility leads to less strain and better vision. Step 1: Hang a photograph on your wall. When you do this. while you consciously perceive different parts of an object. Step 3: Focus in on the details of your finger. . Step 2: Hold your finger 6 to 12 inches away from your face. you should see the illusion of two photographs in the distance. Don't gaze at the object fixedly. Continue to look only at your thumb.

58 Chapter: Conclusion . Massage in a circular motion for 4 breaths. Work your way around the eye area. massaging the eye muscles also reduces tension.
