LSNWJ provides free legal assistance to low-income people and vulnerable seniors affected by the disaster in our usual areas of work (consumer, housing, public entitlements, family and autonomy) as well as in issues related directly to the disaster: • D SNAP (special eligibility for Food Stamps – not yet set up by the State but soon). • Disaster Unemployment (for people unable to get to their jobs and the like because of the disaster) • FEMA issues – individual assistance • Insurance issues • Tenancy issues – rent abatement for period of time that premises are uninhabitable; return of security deposit if can’t re-occupy, compelling landlord to clean-up, muck-out, etc.) We have a flyer on these issues in English and Spanish on NJ 211. We are available as well to participate in the Long Term Recovery work and Unmet Needs Table when that is set up. Hopefully, our experience in Somerset can help with that, as the Somerset Area Disaster Recovery Committee has plans, protocols, forms, etc., that may be of use to Morris as it creates its own process for providing long term recovery assistance.
