Paths to core competencies through a problem-based learning project in civic education
ACTIVATE PUPILS THROUGH PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING Lifelong learning and civic participation is needed in modern, rapidly changing, knowledge-based societies. As dispositions of learning skills and active citizenship shape up in childhood and adolescence, schools can make a significant contribution to the enhancement of pupils’ competencies. Problem-based learning is a learner-centred pedagogical approach which promotes experiential learning organised around the investigation of current realworld problems and thus promotes key competencies like working collaboratively, learning independently and finding creative solutions for complex issues. VOICE. DEVELOPING ACTIVE CITIZENS VOICE is a 2-year Comenius multilateral project which started in January 2011. Educational experts and practitioners from Austria, Estonia, Germany, Slovenia and Turkey are working collaboratively on improvements of educational practice in civic education. Aim of the project is to support teachers in promoting pupils’ learning skills and social and civic competencies in order to motivate and empower them to participate confidently and actively in modern, heterogeneous European societies.
THE VOICE CONSORTIUM IS DEVELOPING 1 Problem-based learning modules for secondary school classes on the themes Democracy, Europe, Human Rights and Migration which also focus on enhancement of pupils’ key competencies. A course manual incl. DVD will be offered in Estonian, German, Slovenian and Turkish. 2 A teacher training course focused on necessary skills and background knowledge for implementation of competence-oriented civic education. A four-day teacher training taking place in October 2012 will be offered via the Comenius database.
