SENIORS MOMENTS
THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE SENIORS OF HURON PARK CHURCH
THREE CHAIRS
In my living room are three chairs. One is no-nonsense, formal, and business-like. Its firm arms and straight, short back give support when I need a place to sit for a moment, perhaps while jotting a quick note at the desk, or while I tie my shoes. I need a place to sit for a moment, perhaps while jotting a quick note at the desk, or while I tie my shoes. The seat is upholstered in burgundya bold, geometric pattern; aesthetically pleasing, yet without unnecessary frivolity. Another is friendly, with generous proportions. Its curved, high back and padded arms comfort my weary body. It lets me stay as long as I want andAm I imagining this?it even seems to miss me when I'm gone. The muted pink fabric is easy to look at, and the warm, wooden arms and legs are graciously carved. The third was made for actionnever idle. It is a mixture of curves and straight lines, humour and sensibility. The fabric is covered with flowers in cheerful bloom. It begs to be sat in and doesn't disappoint if motion is what you're craving. The steady rhythm brings to mind poems and songs, and I can't help but hum or tap my toe while sitting there, rocking away the cares of the day. Each chair has a unique personality and shape. Each chair provides a sense of security and warmth. Each chair serves a purpose and is appreciated for different reasons. Each chair is a reminder of what is now missing from my life.
As I look at these chairs, now sitting empty, my mind is filled with poignant memories of the three women who owned them. Unique in personalityand shape!they provided a sense of security and warmth in my life. Each served an important purpose and was loved and appreciated for different reasons. 2002 Mary F. PORTUGAL MISSIONS TRIP We want to provide you with some details about the various locations we will be working in. As we said before, we will be staying in the Lisbon training center (see picture earlier in this journal) from our arrival on Friday July 1 till Sunday July 10th. For the last two nights (Sunday to Tuesday morning) those that remain we will likely move into a house where we will sleep on beds, couches and on the floor camp style because the training center will be set up for the youth camp for that week We will be serving in 3 locations where we work with the youth, children and their parents to get them excited for a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Linda-a-Velha Baptist Church was started as a home Bible Study in the town of Queijas in 1982. The first official services were held in 1984. In 1986, after purchasing land, a building project began and the temple constructed is still the meeting place of the church today. There were a number of missionaries involved in the leadership of the church, and then a national pastor, Carlos Martins, was called to lead the church in 1997.

The Loures Baptist Church was started in the fall of 1986 by missionaries Dave Southwell and Jon Rust. After having many years with interim national pastors, the church called Alberto Marques as their fulltime Pastor in 1994. He is pastor to this day, and the church has fifty members. In Venda do Pinheiro we will have the use of an adequate sports centre (not the size of a gym) that is surrounded by houses and fields replete with sheep and goats, cats and dogs. We will hold our morning club in this facility unless one becomes available in town (this is outside of the town where we have typically held our activities). There is no church in this town, but we have been evangelizing through English camps since 2006.
http://yfcwoodstock.com/2011/06/volunteer-opportunities-with-open-sky/ To read all about it: http://yfcwoodstock.com/2011/06/the-vision-for-open-sky-bike-co-op/ In setting up for YFC's Open Sky Bike Co-op, one of the things I struggled with was how to get rid of the old sign above the front door. It was the biggest task ahead. Too heavy to lift down with two ladders, and too high to get lots of people up to for lowering it. One day as I was waking up, I began to fret about it. God has been teaching me to trust him in such things rather than fretting, so I chose to ask him to take care of it. So, in the middle of the day yesterday, when I was working at the bike co-op bldg., in comes a man curious about all the bikes. When I explained how I wanted the bike co-op to impact street-involved youth, he loved the idea and offered his services as a carpenter or general handyman. I asked if he had any ideas about how to get the sign down. It turns out a good friend of his owns a sign company and together they took the sign off the next day, free of charge, using his truck with a boom. We put the sign in the store until I could find a way to get 200 lbs. of sign to the salvage yard. The next week I arranged for someone with a trailer to meet me at the shop to move it, but unexpectedly he brought a fellow from another sign company who offered to take the sign in exchange for putting the new sign up. It's amazing how the Lord has been providing. Dave Steenburg
Thank you to the church family for all the prayers and cards we have received during the ongoing battle with my heart condition. At the present time we are doing okay.
Once again this year, Cowapalooza is providing an opportunity on a Sunday morning for churches to come together and worship at Southside. COW (Christians Of Woodstock) are organizing this day and this year the ROCK Community Church is leading the service in worship and preaching. Therefore, there will be NO SERVICE AT HPBC on Sunday August 14th. Instead, the whole church is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and gather together at Southside for worship at 10:00 a.m. Please mark your calendars as a reminder!
I just spent several hours observing teenagers hanging out at the mall. I cam to the conclusion many teenagers are living in poverty. Most young men I observed didnt even own a belt; there wasnt one among the whole group. But that wasnt the sad part. Many were wearing their daddies jans. Some jeans were so big and baggy they hung low on their hips, exposing their underwear. I know some must have been ashamed their daddy was short, because his jeans hardly went below their knees. They werent even their daddies good jeans, for most had holes ripped in them. It concerns me that in a modern, affluent society, there are people who cant afford a decent pait of jeans. I was thinking of asking my church to start a jeans drive for poor kids at the mall. Then on Christmas Eve I could go Christmas carolling and distribute jeans to these poor teenagers. But here is the saddest part..it was the girls they were hanging out ith that disturbed me the most. These girls had the opposite problem of the guys. They all had to wear their little sisters top; it hardly covered their mid sections. However it was their underwear that bothered me the most. They, like the boys, because of their improper fitting clothes, had their underwear exposed. I never saw anything like it. It looked like their underwear was only held together by a single piece of string. (string thong ed) I know it saddens your heart to receive this report on the state of our teenagers. While I go to bed every night, with a closet full of clothes, nearby there are millions of mall girls who barely have enough material to keep it together. The mall is one place where they can find acceptance, so the next time youre there doing your shopping, and you pass by some of these poor teenagers, remember how lucky you are! One more thing..please pray that the guys pants wont fall down and the girls strings wont snap. A concerned Grandmother.
