Voith Turbo Marine presented the concept of the first Voith Water Jet propulsion system at the SMM in Hamburg in September. The new sub-surface Voith Water Jet is being developed especially for ships with a speed between 25 and 40 knots. The design and test phase is expected to be completed by 2007, when construction of the first VWJ will commence.

Voith Turbo Marine GmbH & Co. KG, Heidenheim, Germany Voith Turbo Marine, renowned for the Voith Schneider Propeller, the Voith Cycloidal Rudder and a number of ships concepts, presented the concept of the first Voith Water Jet propulsion system at the SMM in Hamburg in September. In doing so,Voith Turbo Marine is following the strategy of extending its portfolio by further products in the area of ships propulsion systems, which it announced less than one year ago on the occasion of its participation in AIR. The new sub-surface Voith Water Jet (VWJ) is being developed especially for ships with a speed between 25 and 40 knots. It consists of a specially shaped jet, a rotor and a stator. The prototype has a rotor diameter of two metres, a jet length of three metres and an input power of 6.0 MW. It was the marine industry that made Voith Turbo Marine aware of the need for such a ship drive, as modern marine vessels require drives that are not only powerful but also have optimised acoustics. The VWJ fulfills these requirements both in terms of efficiency and noise optimisation, as well as reduction of emissions. The new drive concept is currently being tested at SVA Potsdam (Potsdam Marine Testing Institute). The design and test phase is expected to be completed by 2007, when construction of the first VWJ will commence. At the same time, a new hybrid drive concept for a low-emission and low-noise drive that is particularly economical, is currently being developed in close co-operation between Voith Turbo Marine, SVA Potsdam, Ship-System-DesignConsulting (SSDC) Karl Otto Sadler and Schiffko Hamburg for future European coast guard vessels. This dr ive concept consists of four sub-surface VWJs, two Voith Cycloidal Rudders (VCR) and an Inline Thruster made by AIR, as well as a ships contour specifically developed by Schiffko/SSDC. The co-operation partners are convinced that the Voith Water Jet will find applications outside the military industry. Apart from being suitable for frigates and corvettes, it is also an excellent solution for mega-yachts. The outstanding technical feature of the new Voith solution compared to conventional water jet propulsion system consists of its linear inflow and outflow. As a result, redirections of flow are avoided, which leads to significantly improved efficiencies and lower noise radiation. ENQUIRIES Voith Turbo Marine GmbH & Co.
