A word with so many intimate and intricate definitions that it is hard to even begin to define the word. Literacy is a collective combination of an individuals thoughts, ideas, and experiences that have progressively grown over a period of time. One person, one experience, or one object cannot define literacy. The collection of experiences, people, and objects come together to make an accurate assumption of what the word literacy means to you. As I stated before, literacy is intimate and individualistic which means that it is simply up to the individual to decide how he/she wants to define it. There is an unlimited amount of genres that you can use to effectively display how you view literacy as an individual. With that being said, it is one hundred percent up to the specific person how to convey and display their concept of literacy. Within the concept of literacy the person will find an assortment of interesting, yet complex experiences and ideas that have shaped and formed the persons individuality within the concepts. The concepts of literacy are borderless, meaning that, you create your own boundaries and guidelines. Literacy in everything that we see, hear, touch, and feel. It is simply how we as individuals chose to define the experiences that make our literacy individual from any other. With that being said, I will introduce the genres and the topics of the genres that I, as an individual, chose to use to display, in the most effective manner, my true definition of Literacy. The genre that I felt would convey my concepts of literacy was an autobiographical video/speech that sums up a relatively large part of my life. I also created a power point that sums up the parts
of my life that I missed in my speech. The combination of the two selected genres really helped me to exploit my literacy through different stages of my life. Now I am going to inform you on the many ways that my genres helped me to effectively connect my ideas and produce something that would make sense to anyone who tried to interpret it. I want to give my best effort to show you how I wanted to convey my narrative, explain how the conventions of the genre are used, and make it easy to see the connection between my genre and the content that was in it. Secondly, I will produce the advantages and disadvantages of the genre, and I will explain in detail the decisions about the content of the genre. My idea behind conveying my ideas and my literacy through a video was that it would be much more intimate and gripping if it is coming straight from my mouth. Using the method of a video I believed that I could successfully articulate my ideas of communication. I am a firm believer that when you can see the persons face that it is easier for you to pay attention to what they have to say. I find it difficult to truly understand a persons feelings and understand the depth of what they are trying to say in a paper or an essay. In the video I tried to get across the point that communication is a key part of literacy and that communication has been the most important form of literacy that I have come in contact with. During my short lifetime I have had important people in my life that have shown me the importance of communication. Ranging from coaches, teachers, parents, siblings, pastors, teammates, and most importantly myself. These people have taught me valuable lessons that I still use today. When I was younger my mother would always push me to do my best at everything, and of course that carried on with me until this day. In the video I tried to get the point across that my mother was the most influential person in my life. She taught me more than the importance of communication. She taught me the importance of life and how I could use the gifts of literacy that I had been blessed with to do
great things. My coaches have also influenced me. I have had a great assortment of coaches over the years and they have all displayed a different form of communication. As a young child the coach’s job is to simply tell you what the game is about and teach you the basics of the game. To do this job the coach must have a well-rounded form of communication. As you progress in the sport the coach has to use communication to become a coach that is tough and teaches you many skills that must be learned to win games. In many ways I feel that the job of a teacher, and the job of a coach correlate directly. Many concepts of teaching as well as coaching have to do with communication. This communication comes in a variety of different ways. From being around teachers and coaches for such a long time I have taken that they must have a profound form of communication to get the students to understand what is trying to be taught. Teachers start the same way as coaches and continue up the ladder by teaching you more and more important concepts as you progress. I have also been through problems with teachers. It has taken communication between the teacher and the student to overcome the differences to reach the goal. All it took was me picking up the courage and going time my teacher and letting him or her know that I am having trouble. One hundred percent of the time the teacher has been willing to help me. Teachers and coaches have had a profound impact on my view of literacy and communication. By using the video it helped me to express the way that I have been influenced by communication and literacy by expressing it in a conversation like manner! It helped me to feel comfortable and relaxed while I was producing my product. That comfort and relaxation also helps me to define my literacy in many different ways. I have always been a laid back type of guy who likes to hang out with his friends and have a good time, but staying appropriate and being reasonable. I had a strong feeling that the video would help to convey the type of person
that I am. I was in my room with comfortable clothing on because I would much rather wear something that is comfortable than something that is uncomfortable. That is also an advantage of the video. The critique can get an idea of the person’s personality, and help to use that idea to judge the concepts that they are trying to convey. My laid back personality has helped me to stay level headed about important decisions. The video allows the attentive viewer see how the presenter looks. It also gives the viewer a feel for the person that is presenting and trying to articulate their point. The power point is utilized to reiterate the ideas that might not have gotten across in the video as well as I expected them to. So to avoid any sort of confusion I gathered my thoughts again and produced a Power Point that would help me to effectively display my literacy in a different way. The Power Point is more traditional and it provided me a written way to convey my thoughts about how individual people have influenced my life. It also allowed me to elaborate on specific ideas about how school, work, peers, and home have helped to form my opinion about what literacy’s definition is. The difference in the video and the Power Point gives me a nice contrast that improves the overall quality of the message that I am trying to convey. That message is that communication is the main part of literacy to me. I believe that without communication no one would be able articulate their ideas and express them with any success. My video and my Power Point allowed me to show how communication has affected my life in many ways. The most effective form of communication in my life has been through sports. To effectively play, coach, or referee any sport, one has to have the ability to communicate. Hand motions, eye contact, body language and verbal communication are all types of communication that are used during a sporting event. I tried to gather all of the information about communication and put it in the video that I made. As you can see in the video I use a small amount of hand gestures that help me to get the point across. I also feel like
there is a profound importance that is often forgotten when trying to communicate with someone. That forgotten importance is undoubtedly the effects of eye contact. The use of the video gives me an advantage because I can communicate my ideas with spoken words, with hand gestures, and with eye contact. These are the three main principals of effectively communicating with someone. Knowing this fact has helped me as I have progressed in my literacy. Going in the other direction, my Power Point offers a different form of communication. It offers the reader the ability to pick apart and study the words on a page. Often times when we are not comfortable with someone we will write him or her a note and tell them how we feel. Communication has taught me that the more ways that you can get your point across, the better chance you have of getting to your audience. The video helps me to convey how face-to-face communication helps to display different aspects of my life. It allows me to show the many advantages of verbal and visual communication. The video and the Power Point combine to give me a vast array of advantages and disadvantages. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages but there is a fair amount of both of them. The advantages of the video are completely obvious to me. Number one, it is completely unconventional and not very expected. It allows you to get your ideas across verbally rather than just writing them down on paper. Video gives you the opportunity to utilize many different actions that you would not be able to utilize if the viewer could not see me. It helped me to express my topic in a calm and conducted manner. The video is more intimate and gripping than any other project that I could think of. But along with the advantages you have the disadvantages of the video. It creates a cramp for space and time because as a presenter you do not what to bore your audience with a long and extended video. It is extremely hard to get every single point across in the time frame. This cramp for time helped me to come to the conclusion
to add another dimension to my project. I felt that the power point was an effective way of centralizing my thoughts so that you could not only hear them come out of my mouth from the video but you could also read my thoughts from the screen. The Power Point has its disadvantages also, and the main disadvantage is that it is extremely conventional. It seems like every time a student is assigned a project the first thing that comes to mind is a Power Point. I felt that the video and the Power Point would be a creative way to combine creative and conventional styles. It is a nice contrast and it gives great information while maintaining the creativity that it needs. In summary, I would like to reiterate the fact that I believe that the best definition of literacy is undefined. It is up to the individual to define and extract ideas from experiences that one goes through. With that being said, my personal definition of literacy is how you effectively use communication to teach, learn and adapt to the many aspects of life that involve reading, writing, and communication. I feel that communication has had a major impact on my life and that I would be in a lost and scary world without it. My coaches, teachers, parents, family, friends, and peers are responsible for the development of literacy. This assignment has taught me many things about myself that I needed to learn. I have grown as a person through this process and the same can be said about my literacy. I hope that I have effectively shown that I understand the genre that I used, and have the evidence to back it up. The last thing that I will mention is that even through this process, I will continue to pick up skills to advance my skills in communication. Communication is a vital part of life and literacy and I hope that this paper and my genre has assisted you in understanding that concept.
