How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife, Airez Gamlot, BSA 1-A

In the story, Leon and Maria, the wife, face many challenges along the way, including the passing in the so-called Waig instead of the Camino Real or the paved road. But in the end of the story, both lovers overcome these trials when they reached Leons family house.

What I felt while reading the story is Manuel Arguilla's great love of Nagrebcan (Bauang, La Union).

As a reader, this story shows how true love can surmount all challenges. And as in the case for some women, this story shows how to adjust to their husbands rural lifestyle.

As one of the many stories, this story is very unique because it accurately describes Marias ways of adjusting to Leons hometown. It also has a very powerful impact on the essences of love because it shows that a person from the urban area can be somehow compatible with a partner from the rural area.

Maria represents the a typical Filipino woman or Maria Clara I admire Maria. because despite of those things, she still accept the hardship of the circumstances to prove her love to Leon and though she did not speak or defend herself from the thinking of Leons father, she still prove herself thru actions.

In the line There was no light in Fathers room; Leons father is observing what is happening outside. The absence of light represents how the father knows Maria. But he dont have an perception on how Maia acts as a provincial woman

In the end, father accepted Maria like the last lines said, I watched the waver faintly upward although the author didnt suggest an ending of the story. The story How my Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife, shows the different traits and beliefs of Filipinos, including the roles and practices of women. I could say that Maria and the mother of Leon plays and represents the Filipino women. Maria didnt complain regardless of the treatment she has experienced from Leons father while in the part of Leons mother, she makes no voice in the family. She let the father made the decision on how the couple should be fetch and on what way they should take. It only means that the father or the man is the authority.
