Christina Robinson December 1, 2011 Violetville Elementary School Kindergarten Math Short Description of the Lesson: I am teaching a lesson

on counting, identifying and showing the numbers one through ten using bear cut outs with the numbers 10-20 on them and gummy bears. State your goals and align with the curriculum: Counting and Cardinality K.CC: Count to tell the number of objects. Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted. Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger. Description of the group of students: 27 children in the class 15 boys and 12 girls There are 16 white children, 11 African American children, and 1 Pilipino child that recently moved to the United States from the Philippines. The neighborhood surrounding the school is lower (middle) class families, many of which qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. My mentor teacher gave this information to me. 2 children have speech IEPs. Jasmine and Akasha both receive Speech for articulation. 1 child is in ESOL. Chrislians native language is Tagali he is from the Philippines. There is one child in particular that has daily behavioral issues named Tahron. She normally has to separate him from the group so that the other children can stay focused. He now has his own desk because he couldnt leave the other children alone that were in his group. Preparation: I got the idea for this lesson from Lessonplanet.com. I also got ideas from my mentor teacher. I made this lesson my own by finding the book, Teddy Bear Counting by Barbara Barbieri McGrath to read before we start the math activity. This lesson was engaging and fun so there wasnt much more I could do to improve on it.

The materials I need are one 5 oz. bag of Haribo: Original Gold Bears Gummi Candy and 27 small sandwich bags. I also need 27 sets of 10 bear cut outs with the numbers 10-20 on them. I also need the book Teddy Bear Counting by Barbara Barbieri McGrath. I will call the children to the rug table by table. This lesson will take place on the rug. My planned differentiation would be for Chrislin the non-English speaker in the class. I will make sure to repeat a lot of what I say. I will call on him to participate to see if he understands what I am asking. I will also point to the pictures in the story whenever any of the children or myself talks about them so that he gets a visual of what we are talking about. I will also make sure to give him extra help if he needs it when he has to find the correct bear and place the correct number of gummis on it. I will evaluate the effectiveness of this lesson by looking at each childs bear cut out to see if they have the correct bear and the correct number of gummis on the cut out.

Planning for class management: My mentor teacher uses a lot of classroom management techniques such as a behavior chart, table coins and lots of positive reinforcement. She has all of their names on puzzle piece under the I am having a totally awesome day. Depending on their behavior for the day they can move down to, My day has been a little rocky, or I am having a hard day (Uh Oh, Consequences Given: note home, phone call, loss of privileges). She gives coins to the table, which is by color, for putting their things away the quickest and/or being ready the quickest, etc. For positive reinforcement she uses phrases such as Good boy or Good girl for raising their hands and answering questions. During my lesson, I will be using the same methods that my mentor teacher already uses because the children are already used to these methods. I will be monitoring all of the students behavior correcting them if they call out without being called on. I will first try to give any child that is not following directions non-verbal cues to pay attention. If I have to talk to a child several times I will ask them to stand up and move their name down on the behavior chart. If I have to keep talking to the same child I will ask them to stand up and leave the group by sitting in a chair next to the rug. I will also use plenty of positive reinforcement when the children answer correctly or give great examples. My concerns are that some of the children who normally have behavior issues will think that they dont have to listen to me. I will make sure that children know that I am in charge and they need to have their listening ears on and they need to pay attention to me while I am teaching my lesson. I will handle the misbehaving children in the same manner that my mentor teacher does. Teaching the Lesson: My lesson will take place after the 15-minute quiet time. I will dismiss the students by table to go to the rug according to how quiet they are. The first

table ready will receive one coin. Once all of the children are on the rug I will say, 1,2,3 all eyes on me and they will say 1,2 eyes on you. I will begin the lesson by showing the students a bag of gummi bears. I will ask the students to raise their hand to tell me what animal it is that I am holding. Next I will say, Boys and girls we are going to learn something very special today. We will learn how to count from 11-20 using bears. 1. Introduce the book Teddy Bear Counting by Barbara Barbieri McGrath and ask for predictions about what the book will be about. What are predictions?...What do you think this book will be about? 2. Read the book to the children. As I read the story I will place the teddy bear cut outs on the blackboard, which display the corresponding number. I will also pause while I am reading and ask the children specific questions such as, What number is this? What number comes next? After the story is completed, as a class, we will review the bears on the blackboard by counting aloud together. I will ask questions such as, This bear has the number 10 on it can you hold up 10 fingers? Each finger matches with a number. This finger is one, this finger is two, this finger is three etc. Lets count 10 fingers together. 3. Next I will explain to the students that when they get to their seats they will each be given a bag that has 20 gummi bears in it. I will make sure to enforce the rule that they are not to eat them until it is snack time. I will also show them the bear cut outs they will receive and show them how they each have a different number on them (11-20). 4. Next I will transition the students to their seats by gender. If you are a boy stand up quietly walk to your seat pretending you are a bear! If you are a girl stand up and quietly walk to your seat pretending you are a bear! 5. Once the children are at their seats I will pass out bear cut outs and bags of gummi bears to each student. I will tell students to keep the gummi bears in the bag until they need them. I will tell students to lie out the cut outs so that they can see all of the numbers. 6. Next I will explain each step to the students. After I say a number out loud you must follow my directions. Step one: find the bear with that number on its stomach. Step two: use your gummi bears to show that number by counting them and placing them on your cut out bear. For example if I say the number 11 you must first look for the bear with the number 11 on it (at this time I will hold up the bear with the number 11 on it) then you count out 11 gummi bears and place them on your bear. 11 gummi bears equals the number 11. If I have the bear with the number 12 on it how many gummi bears do we need to have? Step three: Place your hands on your head once you have all of the gummi bears on the paper. 7. After I explain all of the steps I will begin the game by calling out numbers 11-20 one at a time. Now we will begin the game make sure that you are sitting quietly with your listening ears on so that you can hear. I will give the students enough time to complete the task for each number. I will be walking

around making sure that the children are following directions. I will help individual students if they seem to struggle with any of the steps. After each child has the correct the number on their bear I will have the students count the gummi bears out loud in unison. 8. Once the students place the correct number of gummi bears on the cut out I will tell them to place their hands on their head and wait for everyone to be finished. 9. After we go through all 10 numbers I will ask children to place their gummi bears back into their bags and place the bag in front of their pencil box. 10. I will end the lesson by calling out random numbers and having the children hold up the bear that corresponds with that number. Boys and girls each of you did such a great job recognizing the correct numbers on the bears and counting the number of gummies that matches that number. Now lets see how much you have learned today! I will say a number out loud and I want you to find the bear with that number on it and hold it up. Find the bear with the number 15 on it. Who can tell me how many gummi bears we need for this bear? I will do this for a few of the numbers to close this lesson. Boys and girls you each did such a wonderful job knowing your numbers today! 10. Now place all of your bear cut outs inside of your plastic bag. Sit quietly and wait for directions from Ms. Mislack I will monitor the students learning by paying close attention to each of the children throughout the lesson. It will be easy to see if a child does not understand. If this happens I will make a mental note of it and provide them with extra attention to guide them through the lesson. Throughout my lesson I will focus special attention on Chrislin because of his English understanding I will provide extra help for him when he needs to find specific numbered bears and while he must count out a specific number of gummi bears if he seems to be struggling. If there are any behavior issues during my lesson I will first give them a verbal warning if the problem continues I will tell specific children to lower their names on the behavior chart.

Assessing the Lesson: During the lesson I will note what numbers certain children have trouble with. I will then work with those children who seem to be having trouble. I will keep a note card with me to keep track of important information throughout the lesson. At the end of the lesson I will ask the children specific questions such as, Find the bear with the number 15 on it. What number comes after 15 and what number comes before 15? To see if they gained any new knowledge from my lesson. My planned differentiation for Chrislin the non-English speaker in the class I feel was sufficient enough. I paid close attention to him throughout the lesson.

I guided him to find some of the numbers by saying individual numbers of the number. He didnt have much trouble counting the gummi bears. I made sure to spend one on one time with him to see how well he was at recognizing and counting the numbers. Reflecting on the Lesson: The lesson went very well much better then I thought it was going to go. I was surprised at how excited the children were once I showed them the gummi bears. It was a great experience watching the children think and search for the correct numbers. This was one of the few math activities that I have seen them partake in and they were very enthusiastic and every student wanted to participate and follow directions. Some of the children even created patterns with the different colored gummi bears. Yes it was very easy to motivate the children for this lesson. My motivating hook was gummi bears for the children to use to count the number on the cut out bears that I provided. This was the most excited I have seen some of these students in my class. I dont know if I would do anything differently. All of the children were really excited and the only thing that went sort of wrong is that we ran out time so we couldnt go over the last number (20). The management strategies that I needed to use were saying childrens names to get their attention or to tell them to stop chatting while I was reading the book to the class. I also had them put their hands on their heads after they completed each step to make sure that all of the children completed each task and that they were following directions. A few times I said, 1,2,3 eyes on me to get their attention after getting a little loud. I was extremely satisfied with their behavior and my ability to work with these kids. I love coming into the classroom and the children run up to me talking about a past lesson that I taught them. The children kept asking me if they could eat the gummi bears. I told them that they needed to wait and it was a great motivator to keep them engaged and participating. Other children asked for help with counting the correct number of gummi bears so I would use their nametag to help. Each of their nametags has a number chart to 20 on it and we would point to the numbers and use it as a reference. I was definitely prepared for teaching this lesson I made sure that I had the correct number of gummi bears and bear cut outs. I also got the book, Teddy Bear Counting ahead of time from

the public library to make sure that I was completely prepared for this lesson. My supervisor and mentor teacher both expressed to me that I am a natural in the classroom and that I did a wonderful job. The only suggestion my supervisor said that I needed to work on was saying the word, okay. She said that everything else was great. I received a 98% on this math lesson. What did you learn about the children from teaching this lesson and reviewing the assessment? From teaching this lesson it was obvious to me which children are somewhat struggling with math concepts and recognizing their numbers. Some children were advanced and were making patterns while they were counting out their gummis. One child even skip counted by 2s when they were counting their gummis out loud. Seeing things like this made me so proud and happy for these children because they have learned so much since I have stared in this class in the beginning of the semester. This was my last lesson this semester and each prior lesson gave me more and more confidence in my abilities and myself. I am so appreciative to have this opportunity to be in the field and work with a mentor teacher and also to get ideas from her. Hearing my supervisor tell me that I am a natural made me even more confident in myself, which I believe I need to be a successful teacher.

Rationale for the lesson Title: Activity 5: Math Date: December 1, 2011 Course: EDUC 621, Integrated Curriculum in ECE Rationale: I have chosen to use this artifact that reflects my knowledge of promoting early childhood learning and development in order to enhance my students experience in the classroom. This artifact indicates my ability to engage and motivate children in a math lesson involving counting, identifying and showing the numbers 11 through 20 using bear cut outs with the numbers 11-20 on them and gummy bears. The assessment that I used showed me that the children were engaged and could recall the numbers and put them in the correct order. Their ability to stay engaged and place the numbers in the correct order indicate my growing competence in ECE to help me grow professionally to promote and enhance childrens development and learning.
