Advent Meditation
“THE NEARNESS OF GOD”
How Near?
In the story of the Garden of Eden, we are told that God spoke to Adam and Eve as person to
person. Moses heard specific words from God to write down on tablets. Later, people heard
God’s words through the prophets. Eventually, God spoke through Jesus, whose coming we
celebrate in the Advent season. Do you ever wish that God would speak to you directly? Be
careful! At Ɵmes, people claim to have had that experience with disastrous results. A deranged
person commits murder and claims, “God told me to do it.” Amidst all this, what is a reasonable,
pracƟcal experience of hearing God speak and knowing that God is near?
Many worthy and spirit-filled leaders have spoken of “pracƟcing the presence of God.” This
does not mean pretending or claiming something that is not real. It is more a way of being
open to God. It is like reaching up and discovering that God is already reaching down toward us.
Michelangelo painted a picture of this in his famous “CreaƟon of Adam” on the ceiling of the
SisƟne chapel in VaƟcan City. CreaƟon did not stop with Adam. God conƟnues to reach out to
us. It is an ongoing creaƟvity and we can be open to respond to it.
How does this work and how can we be a part of it? Those who “pracƟce God’s presence” begin
by being open to possibiliƟes. Prayer is essenƟally an openness to feel God’s nearness. Yet, it is
also true that specific prayer requests oŌen find pracƟcal answers. When a problem troubles us
and we ask God’s help, a soluƟon may appear right at hand. Is this merely the result of an open
mind, or is it God’s spirit at work within us? It does not always happen, but many people have
experienced it.
How near is God? We are no longer in Eden, but the pracƟce of prayer and meditaƟon gives
remarkable results. SomeƟmes simply praying, “God, come near!” can be remarkably effecƟve.
Behind it all, of course, is the awareness that God really is near. The God of creaƟon, the God of
the Psalm writer, the God of Peter, James, John and Paul is alive in our midst.

TRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
50th Anniversary Souvenir Program Book
Don’t Miss Out!!!
Every member and friend of Trinity UCC is invited and encouraged to be a part
of our history by sponsoring an ad or lisƟng in the 50th Anniversary Souvenir Photo Book.
This book will be comprised of photos and wriƟngs from throughout the history of Trinity,
and a photographic journey through our year of Jubilee and 50th Anniversary CelebraƟon
experiences.
It has been designed to allow everyone to parƟcipate—name lisƟngs as low as $10 and full-
page ads for $1,000—and provides a great way for you, your family or your business to provide
an anniversary giŌ to your church.
50 years from now, when a new generaƟon of Trinitarians is celebraƟng our 100th Anniversary,
this will be one of the source document treasures they rely upon as a chronicle of our 50th
Anniversary. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to be a part of that history.
Come to the Atrium following each service today to place your ad request, or send your
electronic adverƟsements and checks (payable to Trinity UCC) to Melody Morgan at
mbmorgan@trinitychicago.org. You can contact Mrs. Morgan directly at 773-966-1550.

WE GOT NEXT : CelebraƟng the joys and sacrifices of the past and securing the future of
our Next generaƟon to take our community to the Next level.
LeviƟcus 25:1 - 13 (NIV), Luke 4:18 - 19 (KJV)
January • LeviƟcus: 25:10
10
Consecrate the fiŌieth year and proclaim
liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.
It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to
return to your family property and to your own
clan.
February: LeviƟcus 25:1
1
The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai,
March • LeviƟcus 25:2
2
“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When
you enter the land I am going to give you, the
land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.
April • LeviƟcus 25:3
3
For six years sow your fields, and for six years
prune your vineyards and gather their crops.
May • LeviƟcus 25:4-5
4
But in the seventh year the land is to have a
year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do
not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.
5
Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the
grapes of your untended vines. The land is to
have a year of rest.
June • Luke 4:18-19
18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he
hath anointed me to preach the gospel
to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-
hearted, to preach deliverance to the capƟves,
and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at
liberty them that are bruised,
19
To preach the
acceptable year of the Lord.
July • LeviƟcus 25:6-7
6
Whatever the land yields during the sabbath
year will be food for you—for yourself, your
male and female servants, and the hired worker
and temporary resident who live among you,
7

as well as for your livestock and the wild animals
in your land. Whatever the land produces may
be eaten.
August • LeviƟcus 25:8
8
“‘Count off seven sabbath years—seven Ɵmes
seven years—so that the seven sabbath years
amount to a period of forty-nine years.
September • LeviƟcus 25:9
9
Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on
the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day
of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout
your land.
October • LeviƟcus: 25:11-12
11
The fiŌieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do
not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or
harvest the untended vines.
12
For it is a jubilee
and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken
directly from the fields.
November • LeviƟcus 25:13
13
“‘In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to
their own property.
December • LeviƟcus: 25:10
10
Consecrate the fiŌieth year and proclaim
liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.
It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to
return to your family property and to your own
clan.
2011 Trinity UCC Theme
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be at your back.
May the sunlight of Jesus Christ grace your cheek,
And may rain gently fall upon your field.
May God keep you in the hollow
of God’s Hand unƟl we meet again.
Go in peace.
