The Karnala fort pinnacle around which the sanctuary is located The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located in Panvel Taluka of Raigad District, outside Mumbai, India near Matheran and Karjat. The sanctuary is quite small with an area of 12.11 square kilometres but is one of the sanctuaries except the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tungareshwar sanctuary to be within reach of the Mumbai city .
It lies just off the Mumbai-Pune National highway to Goa. It is 12km from the Panvel. It is home to over 150 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds who visit the sanctuary during winter. Three rare birds i.e. Ashy Minivet, three toed kingfisher and Malabar Trogon have been sighted here. It is one of the more popular destination for avid bird-watchers and hikers in the Mumbai area. Karnala Bird Sanctuary is centered around the historic Karnala Fort which stands 475 metres high. The sanctuary is open to visitors throughout the year. The resident bird and animal population can be seen at any time of the year, especially the monsoons, while the best time to see migratory birds is from October to April.Four nature trails exists in the sanctuary 1) Hariyal nature trail-1km 2) Mortaka Nature trail-6km. 3) Garmal Nature trail-3km. 4) Karnala pradakshina trail- 10km. The nature trails pass through various habitats of the sanctuary. It is better to hire a youth from the neighbouring Kalhe village for the long trails.

 It later fell under the command of the Gujarat Sultanate but in 1540 was taken over by Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar. It remained under the command of killedar (garrison commander) Anantrao until a colonel Prother won the fort and established the rule of the British East India Company there in 1818. He ordered 500 of his soldiers to Karnala fort and they were able to capture it. The fort was left in charge of the Gujarat Sultanate but with Portuguese garrisons. After this the Mughals occupied it for some time after which it in 1740 with the rise of the Peshwas of Pune it went to them.

Its exact date of formation is not know but likely it predates 1400 CE as under the Devagiri Yadavs(1248–1318) and under the Tughlaq rulers (1318–1347).000 of his men. Take All the Drinking materials from the base. Two gateways one at the foot and the other at the top of the rock-hewn steps lead to a dual gateway with a chamber in between. Apart from being a place of interest to the naturalist.which is available throughout the year which may or may not be hygienic. As there is no water available on the Hill/Fort. one in Marathi and the other in Persian. This path can be taken from Man made Steps near the entrance. Karnala is a paradise for bird watchers. Try to avoid camping at this site. Mudhan and Peshwas until 1818. so it's better to go with group. The Karnala Fort engulf a steep rock in the midst of greenish surroundings and has been a challenge to many adventurous trekkers all through the past and continue to be a great attraction among the fans of trekkers. by which time British rulers have taken over the grand old fort under their control. almost behind the fort. There are many water tanks on top which does not have good water. Karnala Fort stands as a specimen of the 13th century constructions. I have been there more than 10 times & never encountered any trouble though. If we walk around the pinnacle from left we reach a small cliff. One can see cute water reservoirs developed naturally in the rocks.Take Lots of drinking Water along with you during the summer trek. but there is a water tank cut in the rock.
. Lot of problems tend to occur during Camping. The fort doorway is adorned with many carvings of elephants and tigers. Top pinnacle has huge honeycombs.
.The cool surroundings and the beautiful landscapes make this region a place for calm weekends.
