Secession was an idea thought up by John Calhoun which said states had the power to secede from the union when they felt that the current government was unable to be effective. 2. Formed from the 11 southern slave states at the time with Jefferson Davis as their president. They seceded from the union because the north and south had become violent over the debate over slavery. 3. Senator Crittendens attempt to satisfy the needs of the north and the south through compromise in 1860 before the civil war. It consisted of 6 additional amendments to the current US constitution. 4. The first shot fired in the Civil war was fired at this union owned fort at Charleston, VA. The shots marked the start of the war, and showed how merciless and brutal it would become. 5. Allowed every family in the Union to have 160 acres allowed to each as long as they paid the registration fee, for free, which was used to either boost the economic status of the people that started to live there, or gave money to private speculators. 6. Gave money to the state governments, also boosting the Norths already strong economy compared to the South. 7. Acts in the Union which allowed private and state banks to invest in the government to then be able to issue greenbacks, which only caused up to 80-90% inflation in the union. 8. Meant to meet in the middle, Lincoln built these finally with the resources of the North, with no chance of opposition from the South, making transportation significantly improved in the North for goods, and to go west.

Paper money that cost about 37% of a dollar in the South, and over 60% in the north, creating negative, economy destroying consequences for the South, and significantly good consequences for the North economically, allowing them to hold out in enemy territory. 10. Issued by Lincoln, which successfully drafted about 60,000 men at the start, and later volunteering made it easier for more troops to enlist. 11. Riots in the south forged primarily because they blamed the initialization of the war on black slaves in the south who were consequently hanged, totaling over 200. 12. The right to a speedy trial was temporarily suspended in the union, allowing over 13, 000 jails. 13. S 14. Peace Democrats in the North went by this name, the most famous of which was Vallindigham who was banished to the confederacy. 15. This election consisted of Lincoln against McClellan with Lincoln winning easily in the Electoral College, and McClellan later becoming Lincolns first general. 16. The union passed the confiscation acts to free slaves, which successfully happened to many slaves in the north, and later all owners were compensated accordingly. 17. Famous for announcing the abolition of slavery in the confederate states as well as America, immediately freeing more than 20, 000 slaves successfully, but not all of the southern slaves were liberated. 18. Lead by Robert Gould Shaw, this regiment was primarily made of black soldiers, whether they came from being free or slave. This regiment didnt win many battles, but helped other legions by leading battles. 19. Created by womens rights activist Dorothea Dix, this commission helped bring women in to the nursing field, and also decreased deaths in the war.

This was enacted by the Confederacy to counter the growing and much larger union forces, which resulted in 500, 000 soldiers that the south had at their disposal, even though still not enough, which they didnt realized until it was too late. 21. First general under Lincoln that lost a lot of battles, and lost to Lincoln in the presidency, soon to be replaced by other generals that climaxed at Grant. 22. Appointed him as a king-like figure that was elected to serve 6 years. Overall, he was a bad military leader and too timid to lead the south against the very powerful, and very able north. 23. Vice president of Davis that supported his countrys leader, and did more for the confederacy, but still weak militarily and strategically. 24. Arguably the best general for the union during the civil war that beat Robert Lee, one of the best generals in US history, and served as the first reliable general to Lincoln. 25. Most successful general in the South that won more than 3 battles in row against the overpowering union. Losing a major battle cost the confederacy the small chance it had at winning the war. 26. Wooden ships plated in sheets of iron that made the ships better suited for combat against more primitive cannons. 27. The now southern Virginia/Merrimac easily was destroying older union ships until the extremely durable Monitor came along and stopped it. 28. Battle Technology of the north was better than the south mostly because of its better, more productive factories, which produced higher quality, more accurate weaponry. 29. The common belief in the South that cutting off cotton from Europe would make them submit into helping them during the civil war, and the Europeans easily had leftover cotton to keeps its mills open.

30. This battle contained the bloodiest single day in American history with over 23,000 casualties, with McClellan being crushed during this battle. 31. The first major battle after Fort Sumter that showed how long and bloody the war was going to be. 32. Strong confederate general that was under Robert E. Lee that was able to fight against staggering odds and still win. 33. Major turning point in the war with a union victory able to finally turn the war around.
