KATHMANDU UNIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES (KULS XXIV) Interaction with Prof.

Sung-Hoon Ahn On

Vision and Limitation of Technologies in the 21st century

CEPTE has been organizing the Kathmandu University-Lecture Series (KULS) at Kathmandu University since 2005 with the aim to give practical information on current issues of R&D, policy for their implementation and sustainable management infrastructure development to the students, faculties and invitees. Prominent experts in the field are invited to share their knowledge with KULS participants. For this twenty four -round of KULS interaction we have invited Prof. Dr. Sung-Hoon Ahn from Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea. KU has signed a MOU with SNU in 2010 for mutual cooperation in education, research and development. Dr. Ahn will be here for one week with his 12-people team for the installation of 2 kW PV system for village electrification at Lama Hotel in Langtang National Park in collaboration with KU through CEPTE. The installation will begin from 12 August 2011. Dr. Ahn is a Professor of Aeronautics and Austronautics at School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of SNU. He did his Doctorate in Aeronautics & Astronautics from the Stanford University in 1997. Dr. Ahns research interests are in Rapid Prototyping, Internet-based Design and Manufacturing, Micro/Nano Fabrication, Nano Composite, Design for Manufacturing, Appropriate Technology, and Green Manufacturing. He published over 90 journal-class articles in these areas. For his research accomplishments he has been honored with the Highly Commended Awards. Dr. Ahn is the editor of several distinguished International Journals and member of different professional organizations including ASME. Abstract:
We live in the 21st century with the most advanced technologies ever and face some critical issues to be resolved for the sustainability of human kind. In this seminar, leading edge technologies especially in design and manufacturing will be reviewed briefly. With the knowledge on technology and environment surrounding us, we can predict the future and see the vision of these technologies. Audiences will catch the concepts such as computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), 3D printing, tissue engineering, smart materials, and appropriate technology. Finally, possible limitation in the advancement of technologies will be discussed.
