Kinhaven’s 60th Anniversary Celebration
Friday, July 13th - Sunday, July 15
Kinhaven is currently in its 60th year and we have many reasons to celebrate! To unite alums of all programs, staff, parents, and friends, we will hold a festive gathering on campus from Friday, July 13 through Sunday, July 15, 2012. It will be a time of music-making, renewing old friendships, making new connections, enjoying the beauty of Vermont, and breathing in the Kinhaven Spirit. We hope you will join us! Plans are still evolving, but will include arrival and registration Friday evening, informal chamber music ensembles, opportunity to listen to student orchestra rehearsal, madrigal and choral singing, hill sitting, and much much more! We will select a piece for orchestra and chorus to rehearse for a combined performance with current students and all are invited to sing, play, or provide an enthusiastic audience. Saturday will provide opportunities for chamber music, relaxing with old friends, and taking advantage of the many activities in the Weston area. Following the Saturday evening faculty concert will be Kinhaven’s own inimitable folk dancing. Continued on page 7 By Elizabeth Gombosi - Junior Session Quilting Project -
Warmth in More Ways Than One
by Marty Knieriem, Junior Session Co-Director
Many activities comprise a typical afternoon at Junior Session. This year, as in years past, one of the favorite ways to spend some quiet time on The Sitting Hill with friends old and new (or even by oneself) was to do it while knitting. Junior Session faculty, staff, and students were fortunate that Amber McPherson, violin counselor, is not only an extremely talented musician, but also an expert knitter. In previous summers she taught campers to knit, and this year she took it one step further and asked any student or staff member who wanted to - even if they had never knitted before - to contribute a square, or rectangle, or flower. Her plan was to piece these creations together to make a quilt to present to Nancy Bidlack. Junior Session faculty, staff, and students wanted to be sure that Nancy knew that even without her daily presence at Kinhaven this summer, she was never far from their hearts. Piece by piece, the offerings to the quilt came in. As each item was given to Amber, she tacked it up on the bulletin board in the Dining Hall. You could not imagine a more motley collection of objects! Towards the end of the second week of Junior Session, Amber began to organize the various unique pieces into the whole that they would soon become. It was an immense undertaking, which took on an added urgency as Hurricane Irene forced Junior Session to end a day early.

Report: Senior Session 2011
by Deborah Buck Director of Senior Session Hello, Kinhaven family! What an honor it is has been for Tony and I to lead such a fabulous team of faculty, staff, and the ninety-four high school students who came together for our first Senior Session as Executive Directors. We proudly maintained all of Kinhaven’s cherished traditions: chamber music, madrigal singing, folk dancing, (Molly Bidlacks’s great butterscotch brownies), and - because our dedicated faculty continues to go above and beyond to bring the highest level of music-making to each student - some of the best performances that we have heard in our fifteen years at Kinhaven!
by Sandy Dennis and Marty Knieriem Directors of Junior Session Junior Session 2011 was indeed historic from beginning to end. Newly appointed Junior Session Directors Sandy Dennis and Marty Knieriem assembled an outstanding group of talented young students who hailed all the way from Belgium, California, and Washington state to Mississippi and most of the East Coast. Our faculty and staff, from as far away as Germany, Colorado, and the West Coast, once again led campers in two weeks of intense music making, walks to Weston, folk dancing, hill sitting, Echo Lake, ping pong, knitting, and (of course) delicious butterscotch brownies. The orchestra sounded better that ever and families and friends were treated to highly polished performances of Mozart’s “Magic Flute Overture” and Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony”. Our former director, Nancy Bidlack, continued to be a part of Junior Session by coaching many of our chamber music groups and attending the concerts. Former students were overjoyed to see Nancy and to work with her again, and new students felt honored to finally meet this much talked about legend.

Senior Session 2012 welcomed six outstanding conductors to its rolling hills, beginning with Simon Lipskar who led the students in an impassioned performance of Dvorak's Eighth Symphony. Jeffrey Grogan followed with a refined and joyous rendition of Mozart’s Overture to Così Fan Tutti, while Timothy Weis masterfully led the orchestra through Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite. Ankush Bahl brought the ensemble alive during the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, and our beloved Jerry Bidlack brought the full Kinhaven experience (as only he can do) during a week of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. At summer’s close, Lawrence Loh capitalized on the seasoned group with a brilliant, polished performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture. Senior session also enjoyed four inspiring master classes - including an Alexander Technique seminar led by Dr. Kristin Mozeiko – from Cellist and alum Raman Ramkrishnan, pianist, Gilles Vonsattel, and clarinetist, Alan Kay. Each inspired and entertained as our Kinhaven family listened, laughed, and learned together in the intimate setting of the concert hall.

A unique highlight of our session this summer was the creation of a knitted patchwork quilt for Nancy, a joint project of students, staff, and faculty. By now you’ve all seen photos of this extraordinary creation, crafted by master knitter and Baroque violinist, Amber McPherson. Some of the contributing knitters were quite experienced, others had begun to knit in previous summers at Kinhaven, and some were creating their very first knitted masterpieces. As the pieces were finished, one by one, they were proudly displayed on the bulletin board in the Dining Hall. Several staff and faculty members helped in the final piecing together of the quilt; tweaking, arranging and re-arranging the pieces, occasionally filling them in, to create a glorious whole. Needless to say, Nancy was very moved in receiving this gift of love and appreciation. Continued on page 7
Daniel Katz S’78 piano: I have been awarded the Daniel Jeremy Silver Fellowship for research at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard for the fall semester 2011. I am working on the music of Hirsch Weintraub (1813-1882), an important although not well known synagogue cantor and composer in Koenigsberg. Andrew Hollis S’98 viola: After Kinhaven I received my BM at the University of Miami. I have been working as an audio professional in music and television (Aspen Music Festival, New World Symphony, Solid State Logic) ever since! Dominik Landowne S’02, '03, '06 violin: Will be finishing violinmaking school in Chicago in the spring.
I attended Kinhaven for four summers, and my experience there was truly life-changing. I fell in love with playing chamber music which has been my passion ever since, and it was also the first place where I had the opportunity to play in a full orchestra which is now the new focus of my career. It is such an amazing place to spend the summer, and the faculty and staff are extremely caring and dedicated. I look back on my time at Kinhaven with only fond memories!

A Giving Legacy
An alumna recently left Kinhaven $10,000 in her will, and we will ask you to also consider providing us with a giving legacy for our school. If you wish to name a person or persons to be honored, Kinhaven will be delighted to acknowledge the honoree. It can be someone who was important to you at Kinhaven, a composer, or even a work of music (“The Silver Swan”, perhaps). Whenever you do or redo your own will, please consider being generous to Kinhaven, as all gifts really matter!

Come spend a weekend with us this summer!
Renew old memories and make new friends to rekindle that Spirit of Kinhaven!
Concerts every weekend! Student concerts on Fridays at 4 pm & Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Faculty Concerts on Saturdays at 8:00 pm. Hope to see you this summer! "Senior Session" (Continued from Page 2) Tony and I would like to thank first the Bidlack Family and Caroline Dawson for helping us through this year of transition, as well as Jay Popailo and his family who were absolutely superb with all matters maintenance. Nancy Bidlack remained ever in our hearts and lives this summer as we carted the students down Lawrence Hill to her home for coaching. A special thank you, also, to former Board President, Susan Mesner, for passing on the invaluable history, guidance, and information that we needed order to carry Kinhaven forward through this enormous change. We truly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of our students and their families. From Tony’s first instruction on the finer techniques of handling a broom, to my salon-like styling sessions on the Knoll, we felt the Spirit of Kinhaven alive and well, just as it has been for the past sixty years.
"Quilting Project" (Continued from page 1)
On what would have been the final Sunday of the session, only the staff remained at Kinhaven. As the rain beat down outside, Amber McPherson, Adaiha MacAdam-Somer, Emily Breines, Sara Wolfe, and Angi Blaine all gathered in the Main House for the first ever Junior Session Quilting Bee. After many hours of organizing, careful placement, stitching, filling in, and even creating a bumblebee, the result was a glorious patchwork of different colors, textures, skill levels, and personalities; a true reflection of Junior Session itself. By Monday afternoon almost all of the staff had left. Marty Knieriem and Sandy Dennis, Junior Session Co-Directors, their daughter, Emma, and Ken Kwo, viola faculty member, jointly delivered the quilt to Nancy, who received it with much gratitude and joy. She immediately put it on her lap, where it has been a fairly constant presence ever since, lending warmth to her body and soul.

Dear Kinhaven community,
Letter from the President, Board of Trustees
These are indeed exciting times at Kinhaven Music School. We are busy making preparations to celebrate our 60th Anniversary next summer. In reflecting on our 60-year history, one indelible fact stands out: throughout its history, whether led by the Dushkins, the Bidlacks or Kinhaven’s newest directors, Kinhaven has stayed true to its mission of giving musicians the opportunity to focus on making music in a supportive and nurturing environment. Last year was a year of transition for Kinhaven. The summer of 2011 was our first summer in three decades without Jerry or Nancy Bidlack at the helm. The Kinhaven community will be forever grateful to Nancy and Jerry for their decades of commitment to Kinhaven’s successful musical and educational development. In their honor, the Board of Trustees has created the Jerry and Nancy Bidlack Fund, which will help ensure that the Kinhaven spirit will be preserved for future generations. Additional contributions to the fund are welcome - please see the sidebar on the back cover for information on how to contribute to this fund. While we celebrate the past, we are also excited for the present and the future. The Board of Trustees applauds new Executive/Senior Session Directors Deborah Buck and Anthony Mazzocchi, new Junior Session Directors Sandra Dennis and Martha Knieriem, and faculty and staff from all summer sessions, for helping make the transitional year of 2011 a great success. Not even Hurricane Irene, despite her best efforts, could significantly upset the spirit of Kinhaven; although we were forced to end Junior Session one day early, we suffered minor damage compared to some of our neighbors. As a former student (Senior Session, 1989) and faculty member (Senior Session violin, 1997-1999), Kinhaven is a special place to me. It is an incredible privilege to be actively involved with Kinhaven once again, as President of the Board. On behalf of students, staff, faculty, and the Board, thank you for your continued support of Kinhaven. See you at the 60th Anniversary Celebration! James Wallick
Sunday lunch will provide a forum for discussion of Kinhaven’s future with presentations from the board and our energetic new directors. There will also be an opportunity to tour the splendid new cabins, renovated rehearsal areas, and many improvements to the barn and other buildings. We expect to offer some camping on the Kinhaven grounds and will list area inns and motels on the Kinhaven website. We will be providing increasingly detailed information at www.kinhaven.org after the new year, so be sure to keep checking there. Registration will be online. If you have any questions, or would like to help, please contact Elizabeth Gombosi (flute 55-57) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
"60th Anniversay" (Continued from Page 1)
And finally, Junior Session 2011 will go down in the books as the shortest Junior Camp ever - by one day - due to Hurricane Irene. Although the initial forecasts were scoffed at by those from Florida and Mississippi where hurricanes are the norm, the worriers among us sensed that we needed a plan, just in case. One was hatched and all three final concerts were performed as planned, 24 hours ahead of schedule, full of excitement and beautiful chamber music and orchestral playing. As the last notes of Vivaldi’s “Gloria” resonated in the air, hurried, tearful goodbyes were said as parents and students literally sprinted to their already packed cars and headed home safely.
"Junior Session" (Continued from Page 2)
An historic Junior Session that we will all remember for many years to come!
TRUSTEES: Hello and Goodbye
The Board of Trustees welcomes two new members. Ruth Gerson (Flute ’98-’99) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist currently finishing her professional training in New York City. Ruth attended Kinhaven following her father Stan and Aunt Stephanie, and paved the way for her younger brothers James and David. Ruth hopes to ensure that young musicians will continue to exploit the unique musical and cultural education that Kinhaven provides. Alex Kadvan (Cello ’89) is a graduate of Columbia University and Manhattan School of Music. Today, he is co-owner of artist management company Lever and Beam as well as a small real estate company that handles residential and commercial properties. Alex is looking forward to contributing his marketing and business experience to the Kinhaven Board.
