TABLE OF CONTENTS
HELPFUL INFORMATION
• Camps and programs are organized first by their DURATION or LENGTH (i.e. 5-day, then 4-day or less). Both full-day and partial-day camps are grouped together, and arranged chronologically by start date. Camps and programs are then grouped by their TYPE or SUBJECT/CONTENT: e.g. Golf, Ice Skating, Inline Skating, Skateboarding, Outdoor Fun, and Tennis, then all our Nature, Science & Outdoor Adventure Camps. Within the camp TYPE sections, camps and programs are then organized in chronological order by their START DATE, and then by their AGE group (youngest to oldest). Montgomery Parks encourages and supports the participation of individuals with disabilities. In order to make reasonable accommodations based on individuals’ needs and abilities, please register at least two weeks in advance of the program start date, and request accommodation at that time.

It’s a week of water-filled fun! Plan to get wet (and dirty) as we explore our way through our bit of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We’ll compare fresh and saltwater habitats through hands-on experiences like sampling for water-dwelling animals, and performing simple water tests. Field trips will take us to see where our water comes from, how water is treated before and after we use it, and on a visit to the Chesapeake Bay. We’ll also spend time boating and fishing as we learn all about water, the plants and animals that live there, and how to take better care of our watershed. FOBH $270 Black Hill Visitor Center

Ancient Pathways

Campers will get a hands-on experience of the ways in which our ancestors used the plants, stones, and bones around them for their housing, hardware store, pharmacy, and grocery. Campers will learn how to: build an emergency shelter as well as more complex variations, make fire by friction and then use fire as a tool, and use available materials to provide not only for needs but comforts. By week’s end, you’ll know the basics of how to survive comfortably outdoors! FOBH $270. Black Hill Visitor Center

Every time you strike a match or light a candle you’re receiving a gift from our ancient ancestors—fire! We’ll explore the remarkable role this gift has played in shaping civilization and how different cultures have used fire to heat, cook, fight, manufacture, and illuminate their world. We’ll start a fire without matches, dissect a firecracker, cook our own food over open flames, and bake our own clay pots—and in the meantime, learn what fire actually is. Most importantly, we’ll hear from experts how to use fire safely. Fee includes the cost of a field trip. Brookside Nature Center

FIELD STUDY FOR ADULTS
Dragonflies for Beginners
Ancient dragonflies (Protodonata) were here before the dinosaurs, with fossils dated from over 325 million years ago. These flying predatory insects had wingspans up to 2½ feet wide! Modern-day dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) are smaller, and beautifully diverse. Dragonflies have captured the imagination of people throughout human history, and appear in the art and mythology of American Indians as well as many other cultures. In this course, we’ll identify local dragonflies and learn their natural history, folklore and mythology. We’ll visit and take short, easy walks at several natural and man-made wetland habitats in Wheaton Regional Park, as well as other county parks. The weather may be hot, so we’ll move at a naturalist’s pace, with ample time for observation and photography. Registration fee includes instruction, van transportation, dragonfly field guide, magnifying lens, and resource notebook. Meet at Brookside Gardens each day; a detailed itinerary will be sent in advance to each registrant. Naturalist: Denise Gibbs. Rain dates: Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27.
