Dear God-Fearing Brothers and Sisters !!!...

The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) says: "It is probable that I will be called soon, and I will respond. So I leave behind me two weighty (very worthy and important) things: the Book of Allah (the Qur'an), which is a string stretched from the heaven to the earth; and my progeny, my ahl al-bayt. Verily Allah, the Merciful, the Aware, has informed me that these two will never be separated from each other until they meet me at the Fountain of Abundance (the Hawdh of Kawthar, a spring in heaven). Therefore, be careful how you treat these two in my absence." This hadith has been narrated by more than twenty companions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) and has also been narrated by over 185 narrators mentioned in Sahih Muslim, 2:238; Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal, 5:181-182; Sahih Tirmidhi, 2:220, and others. (M.Ticani) The Holy Prophet(pbuh&hp) says that:" Those who die without recognizing the IMAM (One of the 12 religious leaders appointed by God) die as unbelivers." The Prophet (pbuh&hp) also says :" There will be 12 imams (appointed religious leaders) after me (after my demise) and they will be from Quraysh. Islam will be eminent as long as they exist." Some Verses & Ahadith About the Ahl al-Bayt by Sayyid Mustapha Qazwini The best way to introduce the ahl al-bayt to the Muslim nation is to recall what the Holy Qur'an says about them. "Allah only desires to keep away uncleanliness from you. It does not refer to all of his blood relations. so shower Your blessings and favors upon the Al-i-Muhammad just as You showered them on the Al-i-Abraham. You are the Praiseworthy. While the previous and subsequent statements to the wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) are in the feminine pronouns and gender. and this verse occurs in the middle of Allah's commands to the wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). [66] Tabarani narrates from one of the respected wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). this verse referring to the ahl al-bayt is in the masculine or mixed gender and thus is . saying: "You are also on the right. Whenever the Holy Qur'an refers to the ahl al-bayt. his cousin. and to make you as pure as possible. Several verses of the Holy Qur'an refer specifically to the virtues of the ahl al-bayt and their outstanding position in Islam. but the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) took it from her hand."[65] The prominent scholars of Islam and the narrators of the Prophetic tradition unanimously agree that ahl al-bayt (the household of the Prophet (pbuh&hf)) which Almighty Allah uses in the Holy Qur'an refers to the daughter of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). Hasan and Husayn. 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (pbuh). it excludes them from this particular statement. it refers to a specific group of people who were related not only by blood but most importantly by ideology and faith to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf)." Um Salamah says that she raised the cloak to join them. and the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) defines who they are himself as will be seen. and said: "O Allah. nor his friends or his wives. Um Salamah. and their children Hasan and Husayn (pbut). the Glorious. these are the Al-iMuhammad (the family of Muhammad). Lady Fatima al-Zahra' (pbuh). When they came. the Messenger of Allah (pbuh&hf) covered them with a cloak. O People of the House (ahl al-bayt). that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh&hf) once told his daughter Lady Fatima (pbuh) to call her husband 'Ali and their two sons. put his hand on them."[67] The Verse of Purity (taharah): Although the beginning of this verse addresses the wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf).

This is a well-known fact of all chains of narration. to prayer."[68] Imam Anas ibn Malik adds that the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) did this for six months every day on his way to the morning prayers at the mosque. and Husayn. when passing his daughter Lady Fatima's house on the way to the mosque for the dawn prayers. even without the grammatical evidence. Hasan." Thus. Fakhr al-Din al-Razi says: "Without doubt. How could he be related to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf)? The Imam then recited to him this verse. It has been narrated that the 'Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid asked the seventh imam of the school of ahl al-bayt. However.[69] "Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it (preaching the message) but love for my relatives (qurba).namely. 'Ali. and to make you as pure as possible. Lady Fatima. 'Ali. Imam Musa ibn Ja'far. and spiritual purity of the family of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). To emphasize that the phrase ahl al-bayt in this verse refers only to five people . Lady Fatima alZahra' (pbuh). and Husayn. Allah desires to keep away uncleanliness from you. O ahl al-bayt. used to stop there and call: "To prayer. how he could attribute himself to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) while he was the child of 'Ali with Lady Fatima only carrying the children in her womb. Lady Fatima.narrators say that the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). [70]" (Qurba here refers to the ahl al-bayt [71]) When explaining this verse.clearly not addressed to the wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). and these are his 'al'. Hasan. 'Ali.Muhammad. the relationship between some of the wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) does not fit the spirit of this verse which asserts the physical. O ahl al-bayt. 'al' or 'ahl' refers only to the immediate family of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) . which speaks of the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) and says: "And . no one was as near to the Prophet (pbuh&hf) as Lady Fatima. Hasan. and Husayn . mental. The Verse of Affection (muwaddah): Some argue that Hasan and Husayn are not sons of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) since they are sons of Imam 'Ali (pbuh) and traced their direct lineage to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) through their mother.

" This milestone event in Islamic history has been narrated by all the historians.thus do We reward the good-doers and Zachariah (Zakariyya). a prophet. he was fatherless.each one of them was of the righteous. The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) proved to them that Jesus (pbuh) was the son of Mary .a human being."[72] The Imam then asked the caliph who the father of 'Isa was. and Jesus ('Isa)."[73] In many instances. and let us beseech Allah and invoke His curse upon the liars'.and that regarding him as the son of God is blasphemy since Allah.Allah revealed this verse which was a major challenge to the Christians to pray and invoke Allah that a curse may overtake the party that insists on falsehood. The narrations say that a delegation of Christians from Najran came to the city of Madinah in order to meet with the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) to discuss his prophethood and the new religion he was bringing. the Exalted. and a servant of Allah.from his progeny were David (Dawud). such as when he says: "Fatima is a part of me. on the 24th of the lunar month of Dhul Hijjah. Job (Ayyub). and commentators of the Qur'an and is an event which reveals the exalted status of the Family of the Prophet (pbut). the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) arrived at the meeting holding Husayn in his arms and leading Hasan by his hand. in accordance with Allah's command." "But whoever disputes with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge.namely. when the Prophet (pbuh&hf) found them still deliberately persisting in their false beliefs and traditions .

second this invocation. But if you. then make peace with the man (the Holy Prophet) and return to your land. behind whom came 'Ali. in this Qur'anic verse. The Christian delegation backed away from the maledictory confrontation and agreed to retreat back to Najran." The Pontiff of Najran. states his views as follows.that it is better to reach a compromise with the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) rather than challenge his truth and perish . He would move mountains for them. for their sake. otherwise. in his Tafsir al-Kashshaf. no nation ever dared to challenge a prophet with malediction but that woe befell them. you would all . By God. know that Muhammad is a God-sent prophet who has brought you the final message from your Lord. behind whom came his son-in-law and cousin 'Ali ibn Abi Talib carrying the banner of Islam. all the commentators. Do not accept their challenge for malediction." The next day. Seeing that the Prophet (pbuh&hf) was accompanied only by his immediate family. narrates the event in this way: When this verse was revealed. "So if you persist (for a confrontation) we will all perish. to keep your faith.daughter Lady Fatima. addressed the Christians: "O Christians! I am beholding such faces that if God wishes. the Christians were convinced that he was truthful. 'Abd alMasih.'Abd al-Masih advised his party to stop hostilities and retain their religion by submitting to the Prophet's terms. refuse (to have a showdown) and remain as you are. entered the appointed place and was heard saying to his family: "When I invoke Allah. narrators. for if you do. Not only would they perish. and historians agree that. The Christians held a discourse among themselves that night in which their leader. Although other women were present in the family the Prophet (pbuh&hf) at that time. but their children would also be afflicted with the curse. followed by his daughter Lady Fatima." Saying this . leading Hasan by the hand. the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). he would never have dared to bring his dearest kin along. Zamakhshari. upon seeing the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) and his family. He said: "O Christians. "our women" refers only to Lady Fatima al-Zahra' (pbuh). the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) asked the Christians to the malediction to invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars. carrying Husayn in his arms. and "ourselves" refers only to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) and Imam 'Ali (pbuh). "our children" refers only to Hasan and Husayn (pbut).

When we send blessings on him. and we will keep ours. Allah the Almighty reminds the Muslim nation that He has chosen the ahl al-bayt for the role of leading the Muslim nation. 'O Allah. "Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet. proposed a treaty asking for peace." The Christians delegates. Lady Fatima. O ye who believe. saying that they had no desire to fight the Muslims. You are the Praiseworthy. during the tashhahud (testimony). and there would remain no Christians on the face of the earth till the Day of Resurrection. then what need is there for our blessings? He answers his own question by saying that when we send blessings on the Prophet. By asking the believers to exalt them. the Glorious'.perish." The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) told them: "If you refuse to hold malediction. The emphasis on the Prophet's family in salutation is another indication of their pivotal position after the Prophet (pbuh&hf). Allah will send blessings on him ten times. we send them to glorify Allah and also to reveal our gratitude towards Allah so that He may have compassion on us and reward us." [74] Heeding his advice. he does not even require the blessings of the angels. The Prophet of Islam (pbuh&hf) accepted. the Christians said to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf): "O Abul-Qasim."[76] Al-Razi comments that if Allah and His angels send their blessings upon the Prophet. we have decided not to hold malediction with you. You keep your religion. and their righteous descendants. then submit to Allah. those offering their prayers must salute the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) and his progeny (pbut) ." The Verse of Prayer (salat): . send blessings on Muhammad and on the progeny of Muhammad as you sent blessings on Abraham and on the progeny of Abraham. and you will receive what the Muslims receive and contribute what the Muslims contribute.a term exclusively reserved for 'Ali. narrates the response of the Prophet (pbuh&hf) when he was asked by some of his companions how to send blessings upon him. Thus. One of the most prominent commentators of the Qur'an. the Prophet (pbuh&hf) says: "Whoever sends blessings on me once. Husayn. Hasan. Fakhr al-Din al-Razi. it is not because he is in need of them. since he already has the blessings of Allah."[75] During the five obligatory prayers. He said: "Say. and salute him with a becoming salutation. call for divine blessings upon him. And send grace on Muhammad and on the progeny of Muhammad just as you sent grace on Abraham and on the progeny of Abraham.

And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and the captive. as stated in the chapter Ya Sin. distressful Day. Surely. We showed him the way. flowing in abundance." This introduction prepares our minds for the big sacrifice of the Family of the Prophet (pbut) . Verily. a fountain from which the servants of Allah drink. Humanity would be rightly guided by their parable. Hasan. The chapter begins: "Has there not been over man a period of time when he was nothing to be mentioned? Verily.'Ali.Another verse in the Holy Qur'an asserts the same teachings when Allah the Almighty sends His blessings on the family of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) by saying: "Peace be upon the Al-i-Yasin!"[77] According to some commentators. the righteous drink of a cup tempered with camphor..' so Allah will ward off from them the evil of that Day and cause them to meet with splendor and happiness and reward them for their steadfastness with a garden and with silk. The incident provoking these verses began when Hasan and Husayn fell ill. the evil of which is widespread. whether he be grateful or ungrateful. Qur'anic commentators have a consensus that these verses speak of the ahl albayt and place them at the top of piety and show them as models for the generosity of mankind.described in verses 5-13: The Verse of Feeding. seeing. We desire from you neither reward nor thanks. so We made him hearing. we fear from our Lord a stern. Lady Fatima. 'We feed you for Allah's sake and pleasure only."[78] Chapter 76 in the Holy Qur'an descended to honor a sacred gesture performed by the ahl al-bayt. and their maidservant Fiddah . by the Qur'an full of wisdom. Husayn. Allah entitled this chapter "Mankind" to draw the attention of people to the beauty of mankind's deeds on earth and to tell them that they should not be selfish or greedy but rather should be caring and thoughtful people who spend their time thinking of other human beings around them. Truly. and .. truly you are one of the messengers. They (the Family of the Prophet) fulfill vows and fear a Day. when it addresses him: "Yasin.. We have created man from drops of mixed semen in order to try him. Yasin is one of the names of the Prophet (pbuh&hf).

Hasan and Husayn. her stomach sunk into her back. refer it to Allah and the Messenger. and obey the Messenger. Lady Fatima. the rest of the ahl al-bayt. and their two sons. at the time of breaking the fast. His wife Lady Fatima ground one measure into flour and baked it into five loaves of bread. "O ye who believe! Obey Allah.Lady Fatima al-Zahra' asked her father what to do. a prisoner of war (who had been captured in the defensive wars of Islam and was living in the city of Madinah) came to their door and asked for some food. As he was asking them for the reason. and he saw that they were trembling from hunger."[80] This verse. The The Verse of Guardianship: . On the first day. Hasan and Husayn were cured. on the third day. so Imam 'Ali (pbuh) went to a Khaybarian Jew named Shimon and borrowed three measures of barley. subsequently. refers to the guardianship of Imam 'Ali (pbuh) and.and gave it to him. Lady Fatima herself was sitting hollow-eyed on her prayer mat. On the second day. the entire family would fast for three days. one for each of them. 'Ali. as explained in the previous section. again. at the time of breaking the fast. and they again gave him all their food. At that time. They took the food they intended to eat . and the process of fasting began. fasted for three consecutive days. the Messenger of Allah (pbuh&hf) came and saw his daughter Lady Fatima al-Zahra' and her two children Hasan and Husayn were pale and too weak to speak. breaking their fast for the third consequtive day only with water.a loaf of bread each . at the time of breaking the fast. if He cured them. a destitute (miskin) person came to the door asking for some food. Once again. and those vested with authority over you ('ul ul-'amr minkum)."[79] These verses not only translate the generosity and steadfastness of the ahl al-bayt but also reveal the total submission of the Family of the Prophet (pbut) and their immaculate and pure personalities. The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) has said about 'those vested with authority over you': "Those are my successors. and the leaders of the Muslims after me. saying: "O Muhammad. an orphan came to their door. The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) advised her to make a vow with Allah that. Jibril came to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) with Chapter 76. they took all five loaves of bread and gave them to that man. And if you quarrel about something. along with their maidservant Fiddah. They then broke their fast only with water. Allah congratulates you for the sacrifice of your household. At the time there was nothing in their house to eat.

So I leave behind me two weighty (very worthy and important) things: the Book of Allah (the Qur'an). the ahl al-bayt. why would the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) associate the ahl al-bayt with the Holy Qur'an and place them second in importance to it?
