SYRIA, A BLOODY REPRESSION

The popular uprising in Syria, part of the wider movement knows as the Arab Spring, began in mid-March 2011 in the frontier town of Daraa, 10 kilometers from Jordan. From the start the demonstrations were brutally suppressed. According to the UN, as of late November, there have been than 3,500 victims. The small amount of audiovisual evidence that has emerged from the country seems to point to the Syrian army and government security forces use of indiscriminate violence against demonstrators. For this reason, and because of the months-long repression, President Bashar al-Assads government has been the object of almost unanimous international condemnation and sanctions (with the exception of Russia). In mid-November the country was suspended by the Arab League, which led to attacks against several Western embassies in Damascus by pro-government demonstrators. Among those protecting the regime's interest is a roving, armed militia of shabiha or thugs, set up by the president's brother, Maher al-Assad. The images on these pages were recovered from the mobile phone of a shabiha.

I want to tell you my story, because people need to know what's going on in Syria Quiero contar mi historia porque la gente debe saber lo que est sucediendo en Siria

What is happening in your country?

Shellings, bodies in the streets, the smell of blood, people who disappear and are tortured and then killed, women raped under the gaze of their husbands or fathers and the self-satisfied laughter of the soldiers who lord over us while they threaten us. This is whats happening in Syria. The army and shabiha wear civilian clothes and shoot at anyone who leaves their home. There is no drinking water or bread in Homs. The younger children have been drinking water with sugar for months, because theres no milk either. In my neighborhood, Bab Amro, all the houses have been destroyed. The armed forces knock down the dividing walls between houses to pass from one to another, while the outside walls remain intact so that state TV can film them. The hospitals have been turned into prisons or torture centers.

fled Homs last night with my daughter and my husband. We crossed the Lebanese border on foot and crawled through the mud with a Syrian army tank at our backs. I hadnt left the house for months. We arrived here in Lebanon at night and knocked on several houses until we found hospitality at U.Y.s home. Two other families from Homs are staying here as well. Our house is destroyed. The army reduced it to ruins in an hour. It had cost us the sacrifices of a lifetime.

would have been difficult for her. I promised her that I will go back soon.

What will you do now? Who will look after you?

I arrived here empty-handed. I didnt bring anything with me, nothing for my daughter or husband either. I was lucky to find hospitality in this house. I will stay here until I can go back home. Even if my house has been destroyed, it will always be my home.

Who have you left behind in your country?

For months now I have had no news of my relatives. We cant get in touch with anyone since we dont have electricity; we cant even charge our mobile phones. My son Ibrahim is in Damascus because he is in the army. The last time he came to Homs he couldnt believe it when I told him what was happening. Unless they are actively engaged in the repression, the soldiers have no information. They live in barracks without electricity or the Internet and are completely isolated. I left my mother behind in Syria, too. She cant walk and the journey

Do you feel safe here?

I would like to be in my own house and in my own country. There is nothing in the world worth more than your own country. I dont feel safe here. They are looking for us now, but for me its enough to be able to breathe the clean mountain air here instead of the smell of blood in the streets of Homs.

Qu vas a hacer ahora?

A quin has dejado en tu pas?

What happened to you?

MEXICO
In less than five years, Mexico has witnessed over 35,000 drugrelated deaths. The trafficking of narcotics from South America to the US is one of the countrys most prolific activities and is managed by seven drug cartels who have carved up the country between themselves. The narcotics trade to the US has an estimated turnover of around US$13 billion a year. Thanks to the corruption of local authorities, the Mexican drug trade allows the cartels to lay down the law in large swathes of society. The capital accumulated by the narcos is an attractive proposition for US banks as well. Between 2004 and 2007, cartels laundered US$378 billion the equivalent of a third of Mexicos entire GDP through just one US bank, Wachovia.

SOMALIA, AT WAR FOR 20 YEARS

Somalia has been in the grip of civil war for 20 years. After 1991, when the authoritarian regime of president Mohammed Siad Barre was overthrown, the clan-based opposition groups were unable to agree on how to distribute power and territory. What followed has been an endless, devastating civil war with the division of the country into three separate countries: Somaliland, Puntland and Somalia. Currently the biggest conflict is between the Transitional Federal Government, which has the military support of the African Union, and Al Shabab, an Islamist, al Qaeda-linked group, which controls large parts of the center and south of the country. Much of the most violent fighting and deadly terrorist attacks have taken place in the Transtional Federal Goverment's stronghold of Mogadishu. The 20 years of fighting and subsequent famine the most recent of which, according to some humanitarian agencies, is the worst since the late 1960s are believed to killed up to 1 million Somalis.

Letter from the Ndrangheta to Gaetano

Soon your body will be riddled with 45-bullet holes and youll be gone not only from Palmi but also from this Earth.

You are all in good health and could find honest work get on with it! To work isnt dishonorable. If you dont want to do it for yourselves, do it for your children. And if youve reached a certain age ask yourselves if you can honestly say that your life has been worthwhile. Ask yourselves what sort of life you want your children to have as they grow up. A life spent hiding, filled with bereavements and tragedy?

Reply from Gaetano to the Ndrangheta

WHAT IS THE NDRANGHETA

With an annual turnover of 44 billion (US$58 billion or the equivalent of Slovenias GDP), the Calabrian mafia, or Ndrangheta, is now the most powerful criminal organization in Italy. Its tentacles have spread across the entire country and, in particuar, to the wealthy north. Operating like a genuine multinational company, with close links to the business and political worlds, its power is founded on the enormous profits it makes from drug trafficking, infiltrating public-works contracts, illegal waste trafficking, and prostitution. Protection racketeering and usury alone earn the Ndrangheta about 5 billion (US$6,5 billion) a year.

Letter to Gaetano from a supporter

Gaetano, first of all my name isnt Giuseppe Rossi. We know each other and I hope to be able to tell you who I am one day. You deserve a monument in your name for what you did Gaetano. Only heroes do this sort of thing. Unfortunately we live in a dishonest world, Gaetano and honest people are always the ones that pay. We are not protected by the state. The state knows everything about those people, what they do and what they shouldnt do. The state is corrupt and does not protect us. If it did it would have intervened so you didnt have to end up in this mess. Nevertheless Gaetano, I wish you all your hearts desires, to you and your family, because you deserve it. I hope God helps you and I hope there are more heroes like you in the future. That way we can all live in peace. Best wishes, from a fan.

Enhorabuena! Un admirador.

Letter from Gaetano to the Calabrian people.

Being afraid of the criminals only gives them more power. I have chosen not to leave the land of my birth or change my identity because I want to convey a message of real change. Going to the police doesnt have to mean giving up your life, on the contrary. Other people are starting to stand up for what they believe in, like me, and if each and every one of us plays our part, you can rest assured that things will change dramatically.

COLOMBIA, FARC vs ARMY

Colombia is home to one of the longeststanding armed conflicts in the world. In 1964 the Bogota government bloodily put down the uprising of a group of peasant farmers and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (or FARC) was born. An armed guerrilla movement inspired by Marxist ideology, it does not shrink from financing itself through ransom kidnapping and the drug trade. The FARC operates across the country and regularly battles the national army. Ordinary citizens often get caught in the crossfire and the conflict has caused over 300,000 deaths and forced almost 5 million farmers to abandon their land. FARC leader Alfonso Cano was killed in November 2011 in a military raid.

NASA RESISTANCE: AGAINST THE GUERRILLAS AND AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT

The Nasa are a 120,000-strong indigenous people living in Colombia who speak nasayuwe, not Spanish. Their ancestral culture and heritage is based on a strong relationship with nature. In order to preserve it they have chosen a path of non-violence. Their defense strategy relies on the Indigenous Guard, men and women who patrol the land, try to protect the community and form alliances with both sides in the combat. Members of the Nasa Indigenous Guard are armed only with wooden staffs decorated with colorful ribbons that are a symbol of peace.

Our gods are the spirits of nature Nuestros dioses son los espritus de la naturaleza

We bring harmony to the community

with this ceremony [resguardo]. We invoke the spirits of nature and ask them to help us and give us strength. The Earth is our mother and we are the children of water. Everything possesses life, from stones to trees. During resguardo we spit to purify ourselves and get rid of everything dirty. Afterwards, we feel better.

EGYPT, THE INCOMPLETE REVOLUTION

Dont worry, mother, the revolution is coming No te preocupes mam, la revolucin est llegando
Thats what he always said. He didnt
want anyone to worry about him; he just wanted to be free to follow his beliefs. Over the past two years he was shot in the face and leg by army bullets, but it didnt stop him. He continued to take part in protests because he said that it was not right that churches were being burned down.

Bread, freedom and social justice! This slogan was chanted by hundreds of thousands of Egyptians in Tahrir Square in central Cairo in January 2011. Their demonstrations forced President Hosni Mubarak, who had been in power for nearly 30 years, to resign. After a revolution that cost 1,000 Egyptians their lives, power is now in the hands of military rulers despite the presence of a civilian government. All new attempts at protest in Tahrir Square have been severely repressed. Elections for a new parliament began in November. The overall results will only be known in January, when all areas of the country have voted. So far the Muslim Brotherhood, a party banned under Mubarak, is in the lead with 65 per cent of the vote.

Things dont seem to be going the same

way for Egypts bloggers. The most popular hashtag at the moment is #Free@alaa. Alaa Abdel Fattah is a 29-year-old who was imprisoned post revolution (on 7 November 2011) for refusing to be put on trial by a military tribunal. He is accused of instigating violence during the demonstration by Christian Copts in the Maspero area on 9 October 2011, where Mina Daniel also lost his life. In 2006 Alaa and his wife created manalaa.net, the first aggregator of Egyptian blogs, a window on the world of youthful e-dissidence. The project cost him a few months of prison at the time. The letters he sends his pregnant wife are being posted on their blog and read by people all over the world. In the letter dated 5 November Alaa speaks of a heavy conscience: I have left my wife alone to prepare our son Khaleds room. They chose that name in memory of Khaled Said, the Alexandria-based blogger who has become a symbol for the Egyptian revolution after being beaten and killed by two policemen in June 2010. On the third day of his detention he wrote: I never thought I would have to relive the experience I went through five years ago. After a revolution that brought the tyrant down, being sent back to prison? veiled critiques about the limits of freedom of expression in her country. They were the remarks of a young student. But for a regime used to controlling everything, they were dangerous.

This is my new e-mail. Dont use the old

one, it isnt safe, Slim Amamou, a 33-yearold Tunisian man, warned his online followers after leaving prison. During the questioning he had been forced to reveal his Twitter password but he quickly created a new profile. In the first days of the revolution against the Ben Ali regime Slim posted messages that the authorities didnt appreciate. Now hes the Under-Secretary for Youth Policies in Tunisias first democratically elected government. You can find him on Twitter at @slim404. For a female perspective on the Tunisian situation we recommend atunisiangirl.blogspot.com, a trilingual blog in Arab, French and English. Its author, 28-year-old Lina Ben Mhenni, has been exposing the regimes corruption (and getting around censorship) since 2008.

Young Egyptian blogger Aliaa Magda

Elmahady has been a lot more explicit in her defiance of the authorities. On her blog (arebelsdiary.blogspot.com) she proclaims herself a secular liberal feminist vegetarian individualist Egyptian and says her nude photographic self-portraits are screams against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy. Aliaa Magda has already earned herself the epithet of Egyptian Lolita and her story has sparked furious debate.

ARGENTINAS VILLAS MISERIA

There are 41 million Argentinians and 30 percent of them live below the poverty line. And two of the 11 million people living in the so-called Greater Buenos Aires area (which extends out from the capital for over 300 kilometers) live in slums. These unofficial suburbs have grown up without any sort of urban plan and lack the most basic services, such as drinking water, electricity or sewers. After the Argentine economic crisis of 2001, it was estimated that 11 families a day moved to Buenos Aires villas miseria or shantytowns, doubling their population in just five years.

THE RISE OF PACO IN LOMAS DE ZAMORA

The high-quality cocaine is exported to European countries, the by-product is turned into Paco. This drug for the poor, as it is called in Buenos Aires, is sweeping the streets of Argentina. A dose costs very little, between ARS$2-5 (around US$1). Mixed with harmful substances such as kerosene, it is smoked in a metal pipe. In Lomas de Zamora in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, loads of kids and young people aged between 10 and 22 roam the streets of this shantytown like wolves. They are after the two pesos they need to score a dose. But one hit is never enough because Paco is instantly and dangerously addictive.

PALESTINE

We are men without horizons

The Israelis attack us because they say we are terrorists.

But we are just fishermen who want to work and lead a normal life and spend time with our families. When I go out to sea in my boat I cant see the skyline. I am locked in here, in this bit of land, without reason. We are ordinary men, but also men without horizons. Sami Ali Al Ghuga, 33

Take away our sea and you condemn us to death Si nos quitas el mar, nos condenas a muerte

Of course fishing in this sea is dangerous. But what are we to do?

Fishing is our only livelihood. And this is the only sea we have. The 20 nautical miles they accorded us on paper in the Oslo agreement have today become three. What can you catch in three miles? Not fish, thats for sure.

PALESTINE-ISRAEL, A CONFLICT WITH NO END IN SIGHT

The state of Israel was proclaimed in 1948 on land that had been part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries and a British Mandate since the end of the First World War. An increasing number of Jewish settlers arrived during the British Mandate (1920-1948). They were mainly supporters of the Zionist movement, whose aim was the return of Jews to Palestine, and this growing population triggered tensions with the regions Arab inhabitants. The Jewish exodus accelerated further after the rise of Nazism, spread of anti-Semitism in Europe and the eventual Holocaust. When the new state was proclaimed, a number of neighbouring Arab countries (Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq) jointly attacked Israel but were defeated. A huge number of Arab-Palestinian refugees fled the Zionist state, giving rise to the Palestinian question, a conflict that remains unresolved to the present day. In spite of peace agreements between Israel and Egypt (1978), Israel and Jordan (1994) and between Israel and Palestinian organizations (1993-95), successive conflicts between Israel and its Arab neighbours (in 1956, 1967, 1973 and 1982) have made the Middle East one of the most volatile regions in the modern world.

THE GAZA STRIP

Gaza is a narrow piece of land 40 kilometers long by 10 kilometers wide that is home to 1,5 million Palestinians. Its borders were established in 1948, following the creation of the state of Israel. The Israeli army, which had occupied the Strip ever since the Six-day war of 1967, withdrew definitively in 2005 after evacuating the Israeli settlers who had moved there, but maintains control over its border crossings, airspace and territorial waters. Since 1994 the territory had gradually passed under the control of the Palestinian Authority. In 2007, elections were held and won by Hamas, an Islamic party considered to be a terrorist organization by the European Union and the US. The Israeli government placed the Strip under embargo and closed all border crossings. The Palestinians launched rocket attacks on Israeli cities in 2008. Israel responded with two military invasions, air strikes and the use of tanks.

AFGHANISTAN, AN ONGOING THEATRE OF WAR

Its remote and strategic geographic position has made Afghanistan a key country in the Euro-Asian geopolitical space since the cold war and the stage for numerous conflicts. The last of these began in 2001 after the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers (attacks that Afghanistan-based Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for). It has seen UN troops supporting Hamid Karzais government battle it out against the Islamist Taliban militia. With over 50,000 casualties in 10 years, of which 2,000 NATO soldiers, the war has tried the international coalition forces to the limit and they are gradually withdrawing their troops. Today, Afghanistan is the victim of regular terrorist attacks.

Love is the founding principle

of all religions, but nobody lives by it in reality. Even more than love, I think its important to show sympathy and understanding towards others. Thats why people trust and appreciate us outside the hospital as well. Thats how Emergency manages to operate in such high-risk areas.

At times you get angry and feel a huge sense of powerlessness

This happens after youve worked for hours in the operating
theatre and the patient dies. The anger just takes over because youve tried everything, put your heart and soul into it, and then it all comes to nothing. We arent interested in knowing if our patients are Taliban: every person deserves the same treatment and care.

You see, Qaddafi wanted to exterminate us all

Misurata. A fenced-off area measuring 400m2 that is destined to become a memorial.

If you see how many weapons there are here, any doubts you
might have had just disappear. Qaddafi wanted to destroy Misurata and would have been capable of razing Libya to the ground. He was prepared to commit genocide. I have no idea how he managed to get hold of all these arms. He governed us for over 40 years and destroyed all our dreams. Abdakader Mahmad Hassan Shuedy, 53

LIBYA, THE UNCERTAINTIES OF THE POST-QADDAFI ERA

The tide of so-called Arab Spring uprisings has also dramatically impacted on Libya. In February 2011, a group of rebels took up arms against the Muammar el-Qaddafi regime, which had been in power since 1969. The fighting lasted over six months and spread across the entire country because of the fierce resistance of the regime and the troops faithful to the Libyan leader. In the end, thanks also to NATOs military intervention, the rebels were able to take control. Qaddafi was captured and killed in Surt on October 20, 2011, but his death did not put an end to the tensions. There is great uncertainty surrounding the future of the country and its oil reserves, which are now in the hands of the National Transitional Council. The Council has promised free elections. It is estimated that the war has cost over 30,000 lives.
