Now more than ever, we need physicians and other health workers who can work within health systems that are becoming more and more complex, who can approach health issues by looking through different lenses outside health, and who are willing and capable to get out of the clinic and hospital and champion for better health and greater health equity. These are among the many qualities of a new breed of doctors who will create and sustain health in the 21st century.
A major solution, therefore, is to evaluate how medical professionals are produced, and alter whatever defects exist or supply whatever is lacking. Transforming the education of physicians is an enormous task, as it will entail challenging long-held traditions and institutions. But with the worsening state of health and the growing inequities in society, we cannot afford to be discouraged and to surrender.
We hope that this workshop, Think Global Asia-Pacific Workshop on Global Health in Medical Education, would contribute to the solution.
RAMON LORENZO LUIS R. GUINTO Regional Coordinator for the Asia-Pacific International Federation of Medical Students Associations Over-all Coordinator, Think Global Manila 2011 University of the Philippines Manila Class of 2012
Hosted by the Asian Medical Students Association-Philippines Under the supervision of the Think Global Initiative and the Asia-Pacific Region of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA)
Background
This year, the Think Global Initiative of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) is fortunate to receive substantial financial support from UNESCO that will be used to fund its projects pertaining to global health and medical education. The Initiative chose an NMO-oriented approach as a key strategy to advance the global discussion on these matters. The IFMSA Asia-Pacific Region, through the Asian Medical Students AssociationPhilippines, is fortunate to receive one of the five Think Global-UNESCO grants. The Think Global Asia-Pacific Workshop on Global Health in Medical Education hopes to realize the vision of the Initiative integrating global health in medical education. With the theme Towards a Transformative Medical Education for a Healthy Asia-Pacific Future, the workshop will provide participants a basic understanding of current and emerging global health issues and trends, with a special focus on the Asia-Pacific region. It will also look into ways on how medical education in the region can be transformed in order to produce physicians who are relevant and responsive to 21st century challenges and needs. Finally, workshop participants will explore for ways on how to advocate for substantial medical education reforms to governments, medical schools, training hospitals, and other sectors.
