Think Global Asia-Pacific Workshop on Global Health in Medical Education

Towards a Transformative Medical Education for a Healthy Asia-Pacific Future

December 19-21, 2011 Alvior Hall, University of the Philippines Manila

Message from the IFMSA Regional Coordinator

Today, we medical students and future doctors face serious health challenges in the Philippines and beyond, from the rising costs of non-communicable diseases to the human toll of climate change and disasters. What is becoming more apparent is that these health issues are more social than biomedical in nature, and therefore what we learn from medical school now seems to be inadequate and even irrelevant.

Now more than ever, we need physicians and other health workers who can work within health systems that are becoming more and more complex, who can approach health issues by looking through different lenses outside health, and who are willing and capable to get out of the clinic and hospital and champion for better health and greater health equity. These are among the many qualities of a new breed of doctors who will create and sustain health in the 21st century.

A major solution, therefore, is to evaluate how medical professionals are produced, and alter whatever defects exist or supply whatever is lacking. Transforming the education of physicians is an enormous task, as it will entail challenging long-held traditions and institutions. But with the worsening state of health and the growing inequities in society, we cannot afford to be discouraged and to surrender.

We hope that this workshop, Think Global Asia-Pacific Workshop on Global Health in Medical Education, would contribute to the solution.

RAMON LORENZO LUIS R. GUINTO Regional Coordinator for the Asia-Pacific International Federation of Medical Students Associations Over-all Coordinator, Think Global Manila 2011 University of the Philippines Manila Class of 2012

Message from the AMSA-Philippines President

Mabuhay! With warmest greetings, AMSA-Philippines welcomes our delegates to the IFMSA Think Global 2011. It is about time for us to tackle global health and its social determinants, which have not been given enough attention in previous conferences in favour of more clinical topics. Yet, global health plays a big role in the way we deliver quality health care to our patients. Several medical schools do not even introduce the concept of Universal Health Care until students are at higher year levels. Hence, this short 3-day course will thus encompass all the important essence of health care and delivery, with comparison amongst the different regions. We rejoice to know that at the end of this conference, there will be new champions of global health and will join hands with us in promoting and pushing for universal health care all over the world. Lastly, enjoy your time here in Manila because we have a lot of memories to share with you!

JOANNA MARIE D. CHOA President, AMSA-Philippines 2011-2012

All activities of the IFMSA are linked to one of its six standing committees, which are: Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE), which coordinates medical student international exchange Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE), which coordinates international research exchange Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS (SCORA) Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP)

IFMSA Think Global Initiative

Effective global health education provides students with an understanding of the broader determinants of health and healthcare delivery. It encourages students to consider the ways in which these determinants transcend national borders, and the profound impacts of globalization on health. Think Global aims for all future healthcare professionals to have an understanding of global health and to act as advocates to improve it. The project works with students involved in the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Associations), providing them with opportunities to learn about global health in the context of their clinical and extracurricular activities. As global health education is relevant to all medical students, Think Global integrates comprehensively with all aspects of the IFMSA, working closely with the Standing Committees on: Public Health; Medical Education; Human Rights and Peace; Professional Exchange; Reproductive Health including HIV/AIDS; and Research Exchange. These opportunities include, but are not limited to: global health workshops; input into other workshops and Standing Committee sessions at the IFMSA General Assembly; the IFMSA General Assembly Theme Events; and the provision of reliable global health resources and materials. Students attend a Think Global training or organize their own local events, or attend international conferences such as the World Health Summit or Rio +20 summit. Think Global works actively to include global health education within medical curricula. The project empowers students to act as advocates for global health by training them in global health issues and advocacy. It also aims to build a network of students with similar Global Health interests.
