BALI THE RIGHT WAY

day again punters and welcome to the last issue for the 2011 year from us. It was definitely a roller coaster ride of a year for the island with one of the biggest things being the swell in visitor numbers helping to make most businesses here very happy with all previous records being broken at the airport. Hotels were jam packed and restaurants brimming with happy, hungry travelers. The number I heard was over 200,000 on average, people per month, are hitting the place and doing what they do. I guess that explains the traffic on different occasions Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com and the beer prices being jacked up again. I think of late the island has been getting a smacking by the Australia media, which has been caused by many fools coming here and doing what they do. I think in the New Year maybe a few of them will wise up and think before they act and just maybe choose another holiday destination to visit. One can only hope what the New Year brings is as prosperous for the Balinese. Ok with the closing of the year comes the countdown parties around town and it's a shame we can't get around to all of them. I can recommend a few with my best choice being the event at Echo Beach, the guys out there have spared no expense to ensure everyone is catered for and enjoys bringing in the New Year. They are using their local resident DJ, Ari who generally does a great job to keep a party rolling, but, the powers that be at Echo beach have two special guest DJs from the UK to really push the night along. DJ Mark Doyle and DJ Shake & Vac are both from The United Kingdom and are here for your New Year's party music mix pleasure. The boss has also put on an extra special BBQ for the night along with fireworks' and a fantastic countdown planned. It's free to get in and there is plenty of room for sitting and enjoying a feed and even more room to hit the dance floor. Get in early and have a swim at the beach before dinner. Check out their advert on page 35, Tear it out and give it to the taxi driver as I'm sure they all know where it is, Echo Beach far away in time. The closest shin dig to town for me is at the Bounty Hotel on Poppies Lane 2. These guys always whack on a brilliant show and have been doing so for many many years. This year the party starts about 8PM, and is an, All you can eat, All you can drink affair. Yes that's right, ALL YOU CAN DRINK and I don't mean the cheap stuff, if you want to drink Jim Beam you will be served Jim Beam. They put on a massive buffet, which is equal to some of the best I have eaten at in Asia covering all tastes and they have a sensational entertainment lineup till the big countdown at midnight. It will, as usual, be a great night. I'm not sure if it's the exotic wet and wild dancers or those sexy Grinder girls they put on stage that catch my eye. It could possibly be the 18yrs plus party games they run all night where someone always ends up in the pool. It will be a great night so get down to the Bounty Hotel and sort out your tickets. Again just rip the advert out on page 6 and give it straight to your transport guy or grab a taxi. Ok folks, there you have it, another year flies past like we were all standing still and we can all look forward to the episodes the new year will bring. I hope the most of you enjoy a happy new year and get everything you wish for in the year to come. Stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege. Get ready 2012, here we come, yeeeaaahhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa. Enjoy Your Week, ALIASJ..

Canadian charity throws doomed bunnies a lifeline

A Canadian charity, appropriately named EARS, is offering to help a Rocky Mountain town deal with its bunny problem, promising to neuter and spay the unwanted rabbits rather than let the city carry out its trap-and-cull proposal.
The estimated 2,000 rabbits of Canmore, Alberta, are the black, white and brown descendents of pets released into the wild. "They are not a native wildlife species," the city said sternly in a news release. Under the new proposal, which has yet to be finalized, Earthanimal Humane Education and Rescue Society (EARS) would trap and spay or neuter the feral rabbits, and then provide a sanctuary for them to live out their lives. "EARS has brought us a sound proposal and we are looking forward to working with them," Canmore Mayor Ron Casey said in a statement. "We want to make sure that any transfer of rabbits is done responsibly. We can't have our problem become someone else's." Canmore had wanted to trap and kill the feral rabbits, prompting protests from animal rights groups. ----- &&& ------

Christine O'Brien, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia police, who helped Hsieh track down the missing instrument, said then came a moment of sheer panic for the student. O'Brien said Hsieh realized she had forgotten the instrument after she was picked up from the bus station. She blamed her absent-mindedness on travel fatigue. Hsieh called the bus company, Megabus, roughly 30 minutes after she arrived but the bus had already left the Philadelphia station, O'Brien said. Hsieh also notified police, making a plea for the instrument's recovery, O'Brien said. The 176-year-old instrument, on loan to Hsieh from a Taiwanese cultural foundation, was found by bus cleaners in the same compartment in which Hsieh left it. They put it in storage, and more than six and a half hours. "Each division has incidents of lost items that rare -- but this is probably one of the most unique," police spokeswoman O'Brien said, adding that Hsieh put on a mini-concert for the officers who organized the recovery. "She is very talented," O'Brien said.

One German string player required medical attention from the stress caused when he left his violin, worth roughly $1.4 million, on a commuter train in 2010. It is not unusual for students at Hsieh's school to have such valuable instruments, Ellen Pfeifer, spokeswoman for the New England Conservatory said. "Most of our string players, whether violinists, cellists, or violists, have pretty expensive, old, rare, instruments," Pfeifer said. "They frequently get them on loan from wealthy foundations." Mystery buyer acquires vatican.xxx web address

The Vatican said on Wednesday an unknown buyer had snapped up the internet address vatican.xxx, a domain combining its name with an extension reserved for pornographic content.
"This domain is not available because it has been acquired by someone else, but not the Vatican," Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said on Vatican radio. It was not clear from his statement if the Vatican had tried to acquire the domain in order to prevent future misuse and had been beaten to the punch by the unknown buyer. L o m b a r d i denied Italian media reports that the Vatican had, like many other organizations including companies, universities and museums, registered the xxx domain to prevent its misuse. The xxx domains are being launched this month for pornographic content and many organizations have preemptively acquired them so others cannot.

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 29 Dec - 4 Jan 2012

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19 There are few things you like less than others making decisions that really should be yours to deal with. But not only is that inevitable, the individual in question has your best interests at heart. While there's good reason they can't give you control, they'd be happy to hear your suggestions. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20
Usually you're able to find a way you can do what you know needs to be dealt with while keeping others happy. However, over the past several days that wasn't just impossible, certain individuals seemed determined to make already tricky situations worse. Ironically, their efforts could just turn things in the right direction.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 Living with unresolved tensions is never easy. However, if you haven't already been able to deal with certain matters, you might be better off doing nothing. Changes in circumstance and, as a result in your priorities, by the week's close, could substantially alter your thinking about the situations in question. Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 Little is more worrying than watching somebody who's determined to say what they have in mind, no matter the consequences of their words. While nobody is more aware what the impact of such outbursts can be, things may not be as bad as you fear. You might even be pleasantly surprised. Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 It's been ten days since the retrograde Mercury resumed forward motion. However, because it was positioned in your sign and still is, you'll still be dealing with both the fallout and the resulting insights from the challenging if illuminating cycle. What you're learning is valuable enough it's worth taking time over this process. Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 While the recent New Moon in your sign will have ushered in worthwhile insights, you may not have spotted them for what they are, at least just yet. In some cases it's a matter of being in the right frame of mind. In others you won't notice them until they're needed. Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 After the challenges of Mercury's retrograde cycle, you and everybody else were relieved when it began moving forward again. But that was on the 14th and you're still struggling with a number of tricky situations. That's because they're unique to you, and will remain tricky until you tackle them head on. Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19 Ordinarily you'd assume the fact you've already discussed certain arrangements with other means everything's been dealt with. But if those discussions took place during Mercury's retrograde cycle, then even simple elements of those plans could have changed. At least review what's been agreed. Once you have, you'll be glad you did.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20

If you're still experiencing the fallout from the Gemini eclipsed Full Moon two weeks ago, it's no surprise. This occurred during a period that was already unsettled, which meant ignoring several developments and doing the minimum about the rest. Now, at long last, you can review what took place at leisure.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22

Don't make the mistake of assuming that, should you have to change your plans, you'll be troubling or upsetting others. True, they may moan. But that's more about the effort required than any real difficulty. Look around you and you'll notice situations are unsettled, and everybody's making changes, not just you.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 One of your great skills, as a Leo, is that you make even the most challenging of situations seem both a pleasure and easy. However, even you might be concerned about what's currently brewing. You not only have little control over the actual events, you're tangling with somebody who's a known troublemaker. Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22
At the moment you're undoubtedly trying to find a way around potentially contentious issues. You quite rightly fear that saying too much will result in a confrontation. While that might be inevitable anyway, the longer you can put it off, the better prepared you and everybody else involved will be.

Penguin poo hits panda watchers

Queues of people waiting to see the UK's only pair of giant pandas are being hit by penguin droppings.
Edinburgh Zoo said the rockhopper penguins, whose enclosure borders the pandas' new home, could be suffering from "monochrome jealousy" of Tian Tian and Yang Guang, who arrived from China at the start of December. The zoo is now considering installing a glass panel to protect the visitors from the droppings. Gary Wilson, director of business operations at the zoo, said the penguins were "extremely curious" about the pandas. He said: "Our rockhopper penguins in particular have been watching the events at the panda enclosure below with great interest, ever since work started on the enclosure. "Extremely curious birds, they often gather next to the wall to see what's happening below. We're hoping it's not a case of monochrome jealousy, but one or two of our rockhoppers seem to have had surprisingly good aim. "As far as we're aware it's just happened once and the person laughed it off good naturedly, but we think it's best to look into a solution, probably in the form of a glass panel so that the visitors' view of the penguins isn't obscured." A 41-year-old, who didn't want to be named said, "We were queuing to see the pandas when a man in front shouted out in surprise that his jacket had been hit by a big dollop of penguin poo. "It was really oily and stank of fish. It was disgusting. "It was quite funny but the zoo should do something so it doesn't happen to anyone else." Tian Tian and Yang Guang are to stay in Scotland for at least 10 years. They went on display to the public for the first time last Monday - and 10,000 people have booked tickets to see them.

Call the vet. A dog lover, whose dog was a female and "in heat', agreed to look after her neighbours male dog while the neighbours were on vacation. She had a large house and believed that she could keep the two dogs apart. However, as she was drifting off to sleep she heard awful howling and moaning sounds, rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together, in obvious pain and unable to disengage, as so frequently happens when dogs mate. Unable to separate them, perplexed as to what to do next and, although it was late, she called the vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the vet said, "Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw." "Do you think that will work?" she asked. Two Dutch TV hosts cooked and ate each other's flesh, sampling fried buttock and fried belly, and pushing the boundaries of bad taste on a program aired by a Dutch broadcaster.
A butcher advised presenters Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno on which were the best cuts of human flesh, and a surgeon removed the strips of muscle from Storm's left buttock cheek and Zeno's abdomen. A chef fried the flesh, and served it to Storm and Zeno with green asparagus on the side. Zeno described the experience as similar to eating a piece of car tyre, and took a while to swallow his food on air. Storm cleaned his plate a bit faster, and jokingly likened his own "meat" to Kobe beef because he takes good care of his body and health. "It's sick," said Anna Mees, 25, who watched the show. Storm and Zeno said they got the idea after seeing the film "Alive" about how members of a rugby team ate human flesh to

After an eight-year break from Twenty20 cricket, Stuart MacGill is finally ready to get on board with cricket's moneym a k i n g phenomenon, the Indian Premier League.
MacGill, who did not play any Twenty20 cricket between a fivegame stint with Nottinghamshire in 2003 and this year's Big Bash League, revealed on Monday that he has nominated for February's IPL player auction. The 40-yearold had long been thought of as a specialist of the longer form of the game but with a s u c c e s s f u l comeback with the Sydney Sixers he believes he can deliver in the IPL - if someone is willing to pick him up.

MacGill, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2008, played some warm-up games with Sydney University and said once he could prove that his body was up to it, the decision to apply was an easy one. " I j u s t wanted to see if I could keep together physically and once I ticked that box I thought 'hey, maybe it's worth my while,'" he said. "Having played a couple of Twenty20 games now, I know I can do it. I don't get too sore. "I know I can run around enough. It's worth a go." He hopes to have generated some interest from IPL franchises after some eyecatching performances for the Sixers, including taking 2 for 21 against Brisbane in the opening match. Champion spinner Shane Warne has been a key figure for the Rajasthan Royals since the inception of the IPL in 2008 and he believes MacGill will also enjoy some success.

California sperm donor at odds with federal regulators

An electronics company engineer who the U.S. government considers a one-man sperm bank has fathered an estimated 14 children through free donations of his semen that he advertises over the Internet.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the San Francisco Bay-area sperm donor poses a threat to public health and has ordered him to stop or face up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. But Trent Arsenault, a healthy, 36-year-old bachelor who professes a strong religious upbringing, sees his sperm giveaways as acts of compassion and insists he's not abandoning his genetic generosity without a fight. "Whatever happens with me sets a precedent, which could mean a lot of childless couples," "Does the government need to be in people's bedrooms?" He and the FDA are now embroiled in what is believed to be the first legal battle of its kind, one that has drawn national media attention and could test the limits of the agency's authority to regulate private donations of sperm offered as gifts directly to prospective mothers rather than through commercial sperm banks. Such donations, often provided by men who are close friends of the recipients, have grown more frequent as single women, lesbian partners and heterosexual couples with fertility problems increasingly turn to alternative sources for artificial insemination. Arsenault's prolific willingness to share his genetic material, which he promotes on a website touting his fitness as a donor, caught the scrutiny of the FDA. During the past five years, he has given his sperm on more than 328 occasions to at least 46 women, resulting in 14 births, according to the FDA's best estimates from documentation Arsenault himself provided. This, the agency maintains, poses a risk to public health. "Under FDA's regulations, sperm donors are required to be screened for risk factors that may increase the chances of transmitting a communicable disease," FDA spokesperson Rita Chappelle explained in an email. Sperm banks must comply with precise requirements that include a battery of tests to ensure that the donated sperm does not carry human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B or C, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, human T-lymphotropic virus, cytomegalovirus or various genetic disorders. Arsenault gets himself screened every six months for that entire list of diseases but cannot afford the specific FDA-approved tests he is supposed to undergo within seven days of each sperm donation, at a cost of $1,700, he said. The stringent, costly testing regimen is the main reason sperm banks charge hundreds of dollars for their services, says Sherron Mills, executive director of the Pacific Reproductive Services in San Francisco. Rates there range from $425 to $600 or more per insemination, and any woman who finds such a sum too onerous to pay is probably unable to afford routine costs associated with being a parent, Mills said. "Once you have kids, it costs every bit as much every month," she said. FDA regulators paid four visits last year to Arsenault's home in Fremont, California, a few miles east of San Francisco, to inspect what they regarded as his sperm-bank operation there, even though he only provides his own semen and does not charge for his services. The FDA's inquiry culminated last fall with one final visit by agency officials to his home, accompanied by police, to hand-deliver the cease-and-desist order. Chappelle declined to say whether the agency is investigating any other freelance sperm donors, many of whom advertise their services on the Internet. But Arsenault has retained a lawyer who is handling his court challenge. Pending the outcome of the case, the FDA has refrained from enforcing its order, and Arsenault said he has continued to donate sperm. Besides providing greater health safeguards, Mills said, sperm banks offer their customers stronger legal protection from donors who might try to assert their paternity rights after a child is born. Arsenault signs forms waiving any parental rights. But Mills said such agreements have been voided in some California cases when a medical doctor was absent from the transaction. Eleanor Nicoll, spokeswoman for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, said the involvement of a physician is beneficial in and of itself. "If you're trying to address a medical problem, you should seek medical treatment," she said. But Arsenault argues that outlawing the kind of free service he provides runs the risk of driving some women to seek sperm donations from more questionable sources. "If you shut out the sperm donors, they are going to have to meet some bar dude," he said. "Spouses would have to cheat on each other." Arsenault said he gets to know couples before donating to them and maintains relationships with many of the children conceived with his sperm, one reason he doesn't want to stop. "I have made a commitment to families I donated to," he said. "It's a big emotional process to partner with a donor.

because my kids thought I was getting old," MacGill said.

Hungary tech firm immortalises Steve Jobs in bronze

A Hungarian software company unveiled what it said was the world's first bronze statue of Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs, calling him one of the greatest personalities of the modern age.
Jobs died on October 5 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 56. The bronze work by sculptor Erno Toth stands in the Budapest campus of architectural software maker Graphisoft. "He was one of the greatest (personalities) in our era, that's what we wanted to express with this sculpture here," Graphisoft Chairman Gabor Bojar said. Bojar said Jobs gave cash and computers to Graphisoft, helping it to become a global leader in architecture software from humble roots as a tiny firm in the 1980s in then-communist Hungary. "In some ways, Apple was a religion," Bojar said at the unveiling ceremony, comparing the experts from Cupertino-based Apple who helped educate Graphisoft's e n g i n e e r s t o evangelists. Steve Jobs represented a technological revolution which can be compared only to the discovery of writing, Bojar said. "We have felt his spirit every day and now it is embodied," he said. "We hope that we can deserve with our entrepreneurial culture in Hungary what this sculpture expresses as a message.

Final strike sees AFL star banned for life

Three-time AFL premiership player Darryl White has been banned from playing football for life.
White, who is playing with St Marys in the Northern Territory Football League this season, received a onematch suspension for striking Tiwi Bomber Donald Mungatopi in last weekend's round of matches. T h e transgression took White's career number of match suspensions to 16. This is one above the maximum allowed under a new AFLNT deregistration policy. If a player is deregistered, he cannot play any AFL-affiliated football. The ban is recognised Australia-wide and could bring to an end the 38-year-old's playing career that has included almost 700 games, including premierships with the Brisbane Lions in 2001, 2002 and 2003. White says he will fight the ban. "I'm a little bit disappointed and downhearted, but the sun comes up every morning I suppose and life goes on," he said. "Hopefully I'll get the right people in place to fight it because I think it's pretty crude. I've been playing the number of games played is not a fair rule." Right to play But AFLNT chief executive Tony Frawley says White may even still be able to play football this season. Frawley disputed the deregistration constituted a lifetime ban. "He is currently deregistered and he now has the right of appeal to go to an independent tribunal to make an assessment on whether he can remain playing." Frawley says there are a number of NTFL players who are in danger of being deregistered. "We have got two players who are currently deregistered, and Darryl is one of those," he said. "We have got 21 other players with a letter of warning. "Those players are on somewhere between 12 and say 14 games suspension, and they actually know that if they get reported again they could be deregistered."

POLE dancing may conjure up images of men in seedy clubs leering at semi-naked women, but it has a growing following in the US as a way to keep fit - and even aspires to be an Olympic sport. The sensual dance form began to appear as a variant of aerobics or "step"-type workouts about a decade ago, changing its name to "pole fitness" to distinguish it from the erotic nightclub version. Since then, some 500 pole dancing/fitness studios have sprung up across the country, and it is often difficult to determine which ones are purely fitness and which ones have elements of erotic dance. "They are almost always both in a studio and very few studios differentiate," Claire Griffin Sterrett of Vertical Art & Fitness magazine said, adding she had seen women as young as 14 and as old as 72 on the pole. "Many fitness routines feel dull, repetitive and stale," she said in praising her sport's "incredible fitness benefits.'' "Pole dancing provides a physical challenge that keeps your mind and body engaged. I also think that women are finding great pleasure in the sensuality of the movement." While Griffin embraces the sensual aspect of pole dancing, noting that women are attracted to the pole precisely for this reason, others prefer to distinguish it clearly from the sexually charged version. Intent on improving the routine's reputation, the Pole Fitness Association stresses that it's also an activity for men and celebrates pole fitness as a "rigorous, tasteful and athletic art". "Over 50 countries worldwide take part in lessons, workshops, conventions, expos, competitions and teacher training," said an online PFA petition for pole dancing to be included at the Olympics, like parallel bars for gymnasts. "This is an international sport that both men, women and those that are on a low income can take part in, unlike sports such as horse riding, sailing and snowbased sports." But the division between sexually

First lesson: take a scarf, walk slinkily up to the pole and encircle it with the cloth. Holding the material by both ends, turn around, arms over head, and rub it up and down the cold metal by raising and lowering your body. "Keep your walk slow... go slow, go around the area, pull away. Hold on. If you're smiling and laughing they will love you. Smile so they know you are also enjoying it," said the instructor, who asked not to be named. "Remember, we are not in a hurry, take your time. Your number one tool: visual stimulation. Make eye contact and keep it. US-SOCIETY-DANCE-SEXREPORTAGE-STRIPPER UNIVERSITY While pole-dancing may have a growing following, feminist critics are less than impressed. P a t t y Bellasalma of the California National Organization for Women dismissed pole dancing's popularity as "symptomatic of a consumer-driven society that constantly reduces women and men into objects". "This latest fitness craze is just the newest version of the Madonna-whore, where mostly white women are told they can spice up their love life by 'playing' the whore for the supposed delight of their lover, and have rock hard abs in the process," she said. "Pole dancing not only perpetuates the objectification of women, but does so through a lens of white privilege, since the only women in this society given the choice to play a whore are middle class and

yesterday by his daughter, WPLG-TV said. The cause of death has not yet been determined. "We're not sure if he fell, had a medical condition or if it was bee stings," Miami Fire Rescue Lt Ignatius Carroll said.

provocative dance and acrobatic exercise routine is not clear cut. In Las Vegas, the number of pole dancing academies has grown in recent years, fueled by the permissiveness for which the Nevada gambling mecca is known. For tourists visiting Sin City, pole dancing is a great attraction, be it sport or dance. "Vegas is when people explore themselves," said Angela Phoumiphat, who runs the Las Vegas Stripper Poles Dance school, one of many in the city offering pole dancing classes. In a studio with wooden floors and mirrored walls, a group of women of all ages, shapes and sizes practised with 4.5m poles. "We thought it'd be fun. I am on a three-day vacation and it's the perfect thing to do in Sin City," said Erin, a 28-year-old Canadian h u m a n resources professional. "I t h i n k m y husband will definitely like what I pick up here." S h e planned on practising at home using chairs. H e r compatriot friend Rhonda, 44, said she took the class for exercise. "It's something different, but anyway I will definitely use it in my sex life," she said.
