a problem for many years in Parkgate.
But now Neston Town Council has
completed a project to dredge the
marshes so hopefully this will stop the
mosquitoes breeding. You can read

bespoke, state of the art fltration systems, to look after not only yourself but
our fsh aswell.

NestoN town Council has completed
a project to dredge and de-silt the main
drainage gutter and create two new
ponds within the marshes at Parkgate
following a grant from Cheshire West and
Chester Councils Rural support Fund.
the marshes were in need of
management in order to reduce the
growing mosquito menace which has
been affecting the local community and
visitors to Parkgate.
Phases 1 and 2 of the scheme costing
15,000 have been met by a 7,500
grant from the Councils Rural support
Fund, with the remaining funds being met
through a grant of 3,000 from Cheshire
West and Chester Councils Regulatory
services
Neston town Council, Parkgate society
and the Royal society for Protection
of Birds also contributed 1,500 each
towards the project.
Despite regular spraying of the marshes
the problem was still escalating. the
increase in stagnant water areas on the
marsh is due to the lack of dredging of the
main gully in the River Dee, which then
provides an ideal breeding ground for
mosquitos. the de-silting of the gutters
and pool creation works will reduce the
mosquito breeding population.

Council and project lead said: For many
years the local community has suffered
greatly from what is locally referred to as
the mosquito menace.
Neston town Council, in partnership
with Parkgate Civic society and RsPB,
wish to thank Cheshire West and Chester
Council for supporting us with this project
which will improve the lives of local
residents as well as improve the visitor
experience.
We are also keen to see environmental
improvements with regard to the overall
biodiversity of the marsh.

proposals to install viewing platforms
along Parkgate front in partnership
with the RsPB and Cheshire West and
Chester Council.

Roses tea Rooms, based at Ness
Botanic Gardens, won the prestigious
taste of Cheshire Award 2011.
the awards were held at the new West
Cheshire College late last year and were
hosted by Marketing Cheshire with special
guest Diane oxberry from BBCs North
West tonight.
Roses tea Rooms, a family run tea room
opened in 2005 in Heswall. Husband and
wife team Andreas Constantinou and
Michelle Foulia wanted to provide the
quintessential english tea room with a
Mediterranean twist which refected their
Greek Cypriot heritage. specialising in
homemade food and patisserie all made
on site using locally sourced ingredients
their small friendly tea room was soon
a frm favourite with the locals and won
many awards over the next four years.
In August 2010, they relocated to Ness
Botanic Gardens at the invitation of its
Director, Kevin Reid.
Having won the taste of Cheshire Award,
Roses tea Rooms will now go on to
represent Cheshire in the North West
regional competition and if successful, the
National Awards in london.

group in Neston, offers her top tips to stay on track with your resolutions this
year.
New Year can be a good time to make the decision to change your lifestyle
and lose weight. But there are some common traps that people fall into,
especially at this time of year when there are so many faddy dieting ideas fying
around. By being aware of these obstacles you can give yourself the best
chance of a successful weight loss, she says.
tips to avoid weight loss traps:
1. losing weight just because its January. Make sure your motivation to lose weight is more
than just because its the New Year. think about your reasons for wanting to lose weight.
Making small changes will increase your chances of success.
2. Going on a fad diet. Following the latest fad diet or Hollywood craze may work in the short
term, but these diets are usually very restrictive and impractical in the long term. theyre often
based around extremes such as banning whole food groups or replacing them with liquid foods.
3. Going hungry. slimming doesnt have to mean
starving. slimming Worlds healthy eating plan,
Food optimising, encourages members to eat lots
of satisfying and naturally low-fat foods like pasta,
rice, potatoes, lean meat, fsh and plenty of fruit
and vegetables so theyre never hungry and its
easy to enjoy all their favourite dishes like spaghetti
Bolognese, roast dinners and even chips.
4. Joining a gym. Many people join a gym in the
mistaken belief that exercise alone will shift their
excess pounds. But research shows that exercise
combined with a healthy eating programme is the

5. setting unrealistic targets. set yourself achievable

tHe long wait is fnally over for 15-year-
old sophie Roscoe, a year 10 student
at Neston High school as her badge,
designed specifcally for the 2012
olympics, went on sale in John lewis,
liverpool and on the John lewis website.
sophie was one of the thousands of
North West students who entered the
competition via her school to design a
regional version of one of the olympic
Mascots Wenlock or Mandeville. 12
Regional winners would be chosen and
their design turned into offcial 2012
merchandise to be sold at all offcial
202 outlets in the UK and online with
proceeds going to the olympics.
A judging panel of former athletes
chose sophies design along with that
of another Neston High school student,
Jonathan Helm. Both students produced
background material describing their
design and why they felt that their design
represented their area (the North West).
After presenting this to a panel of olympic
representatives in london a winner from
each region was chosen with sophies
design being chosen as winner for the
North West Region.
Part of sophies prize was to return to
london to work with a top graphics studio
to fnalise her design ready for production
into offcial merchandise.
sophies original design captured her
view of the North West and was of
Wenlock, coloured in Red to refect a
dominant colour for liverpool and the
colour of one of the Beatles well known
albums. she had also drawn the Beatles
on her design and a number of other
well-known Beatles logos along with the
liver Birds. the centre badge of Wenlock
represented a drum and Wenlock himself
is holding drum sticks to represent the
famous Mersey Beat.

In November members had a lunch at

In December they went to a Christmas
carol concert at Chester Cathedral and
had their Christmas dinner at the Grange.
In January the group will go to the Winter
Warmer social evening at thornton Hough

R.M.S.titanic Remembered
local maritime charity Friends of the sea will be hosting a Gala Dinner at the Grange,
thornton Hough on Friday 27th April. Wine and dine to the accompaniment of a string
quartet, while going back in time to 1912 and being part of the scene as the dramatic events
of the sinking of the titanic are re-told by author and historian Ken Pye.
Friends of the sea is a local charity raising funds for those involved in maritime activities. It
is a major sponsor of Chance of a lifetime Venture for young deserving sixth formers, giving
them the opportunity to experience sailing and working collaboratively. It also raises funds for
the sea Cadets, sea scouts, Maritime Volunteer services, UK North Blind sailing Association

Non Fiction: the Secret Life of Bletchley Park by Sinclair McKay
Bletchley Park was where one of the wars most famous and crucial achievements was made:
the cracking of Germanys enigma code in which its most important military communications
were couched. this country house in the Buckinghamshire countryside was home to Britains most
brilliant mathematical brains, and the scene of immense advances in technology indeed, the birth
of modern computing. the military codes deciphered there were instrumental in turning both the
Battle of the Atlantic and the war in North Africa. What was life like during the war for the thousands
of men and women who lived and worked there an odd, secret territory between the civilian and
the military? Sinclair McKays book is the frst history for the general reader of life at Bletchley Park,
and an amazing compendium of memories from people now in their eighties of skating on the
frozen lake in the grounds (a depressed Angus Wilson, the novelist, once threw himself in) of a
youthful Roy Jenkins, useless at codebreaking, of the high jinks at nearby accommodation hostels
and of the implacable secrecy that meant girlfriend and boyfriend working in adjacent huts knew
