2011-12 Utah Mens Basketball Game Notes

Note the Time Change

Utahs home games vs. Arizona on Jan. 19 and
Stanford on Feb. 25 will now tip off at 6:30 p.m.
MT to accomodate television broadcasts.
Utes Capture First Pac-12 Home
Game in Overtime
Thursday was a night of firsts for Utah basketball.
The Utes 62-60 victory over Washington State,
marked Utahs first Pac-12 Conference victory,
first Pac-12 win at home, first home game as
members of the newly expanded league and
first overtime win since the 2008-09 season. It
was also Utahs first ever Blackout game in mens
basketball.
Watkins Among Pac-12 Leaders in
Scoring, Assists
Watkins is averaging 15.5 points per game, sixthbest in the Pac-12, including all games played. He
has scored double figures in 11 of his 13 games
this year and in 16 of his last 18, going back to
last season. Watkins has scored double figures in
35 of 44 career games as a Ute and has eclipsed
the 20-point plateau 10 times, including a careerhigh 26 against Portland on Dec. 19.
Watkins has posted at least five assists in eight
of his last nine games and is averaging 5.2 assists
per game, second-best in the league. He has led
or tied for the team lead in assists 12 times this
season.
Farr Continues Upward Scoring Trend
Junior forward Dijon Farr has proven to be a
solid and efficient scoring option over the last
five games. Since scoring a career-high 16 points
against Idaho State on Dec. 16, he has averaged
11.2 points and raised his season scoring average
to 6.4 points per game.
Most recently, Farr scored 10 points on 5-of-9
from the field against Washington State. Over the
last five games, Farr has shot 55% from the field,
knocking down 24-of-44 field goals, including
4-of-9 from 3-point range.
Farr is currently Utahs best 3-point threat among
players with at least 10 attempts, shooting 42.9%
for the season (6-of-14).
Martin Has Career Night Doing
The Dirty Work
Junior wing Cedric Martin posted career highs of
eight rebounds and five assists Thursday against
Washington State, while playing a career-high 42
minutes. He also added five points and made a
steal, while playing a key role in Utahs defensive
effort that allowed only 60 pointsincluding
just 54 in regulationa season-low by any Utah
opponent.
Washburn Consistently Scoring
Double Digits
Coming off 11 points against Washington State,
Washburn has scored double digits in 10 of 14
games this season and ranks among the top 30

scorers in the Pac-12, coming in at No. 29 with

11.1 points per game.
Washburn is shooting a very efficient 60% from
the floor for the season (60-of-100), which is
highest on the team and third-best in the Pac12. He is also knocking down 78.3% of his free
throws (36-of-46), best on the squad and ninth in
the Pac-12.
Washburn is averaging 6.9 boards per contest,
leading the Utes and ranking sixth in the Pac-12.
He is well ahead of his career average of 4.1
rebounds per game and is just four boards away
from eclipsing the 100-rebound mark for the
second time in his career. He is on pace to get his
100th rebound in game 15 against Washington
on Saturday, six games faster than last year.
Head coach Larry Krystkowiak has stated that
he would like Utahs big men to maintain a
rebounding pace around one every four minutes.
With 96 boards in 397 minutes this season,
Washburn is right on that pace.
Utah vs. the Pac-12
With the win against Washington State, Utah
improves its all-time record against the Pac-12
to 147-115 (.561), including a 1-1 mark as a
member of the league.
Watkins and Storey Dish It Out
Watkins and freshman guard Kareem Storey have
combined for 41 assists and only 21 turnovers
over the last four games, an assist-to-turnover
ratio of 1.95.
The two have combined for 101 assists on the
season. Twice they have each posted five or more
assists in the same game (vs. Idaho State and at
Boise State).
Utes in Overtime
With Thursdays victory, Utah improved to 50-35
in overtime, including a 23-10 record at the
Huntsman Center. It was Utahs first overtime
win since defeating Colorado State, 89-79, on the
road on Feb. 18, 2009.
The Utes at the Huntsman Center
Utah owns an all-time record of 530-128 (.805) in
its current home, the Jon M. Huntsman Center,
including a 4-3 mark this season.
The Utes have posted a winning record at home
in 38 consecutive seasons, beginning in 1973-74.
In conference home games over the last 18 years,
Utah is 105-22 (.827), including a 1-0 mark as
members of the Pac-12.

the Utes head coach and his first as a head coach

in the Pac-12. For his NCAA coaching career,
Krystkowiak is now 46-30 (.605) in his third year.
Krystkowiak (pronounced krist-KOH-vee-ak), who
has prior head coaching experience in the NCAA,
CBA and NBA, left a position as an assistant coach
with the New Jersey Nets to become the 15th
head coach in Utah mens basketball history.
In his previous collegiate head coaching post,
Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University
of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA
appearances as the Grizzlies from 2004-06
before joining the NBA coaching ranks.
Utes Ink Five for 2012
Utah opened the early signing period by inking
five players who will join the Utes for the
2012-13 season. The signing class includes high
school seniors Josh Hearlihy (North Hollywood,
Calif., Harvard-Westlake HS), Jordan Loveridge
(West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) and Justin
Seymour (Marietta, Ga., Wheeler HS), along
with Southern Utah transfer Dallin Bachynski
(Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Sir Winston Churchill
HS) and returning LDS missionary Jeremy Olsen
(Lawrenceville, Ga., Collins Hill HS).
Utahs Blocks Leader
Out Indefinitely
Senior center David Foster underwent foot
surgery in November and is out indefinitely.
Foster is Utahs career record holder in blocked
shots with 219. He also holds the top two
single-season marks with 115 in 2009-10 and
99 last season. Foster led the Mountain West
Conference in blocks the last two years and
finished among the top five in NCAA Div. I both
years as well. He was the 2010 MWC Defensive
Player of the Year and was also named to the
MWC All-Defensive team in 2011.
