Dream on President

by Reece Ayoub, Darryl Dizon,

David Samaan, Zack Kaltoum and Adrian Lee
Akkiki still remembers the horrific day where guns were fired
violently and screams of agony and excruciating pain were heard.
Akikki remains traumatized since he was 3 as he witnessed the
brutality and gruesomeness of his parents being axed by two
merciless rebels. It has been 10 years since the devastating event
and Akkiki has studied overwhelmingly hard at school to hope-
fully achieve his ambition of becoming the president of Uganda.
He promises himself everyday that when he becomes president
he shall protect all civilians by eliminating rebels, crime and most
importantly, abolish poverty.
However, Akkiki’s dream appears seemingly unattainable
due to one unfortunate day. He was participating in a soccer com-
petition held at his favourite field known as ‘Lolonga’. The com-
petition began as he faced and battled against the greatest teams in
Uganda. His team epitomized hard work, dedication and pride as
they stood victorious in the qualification rounds, quarter match and
additionally the semi-final match of the annual competition.
His team qualified for the grand finals where he was des-
tined to face the challenge of his life- versing the Redganidans who
were remarkably deemed unbeatable. Akkiki was not frightened
or pressured at all as he was regarded as the boy with the biggest
heart amongst his little village.
Whistles suddenly went off and the grand finals had been
officially commenced. Almost immediately, the Redganidans had
amazingly scored 3 goals in one minute in the arid and desert
like field. Soon after, Akkiki found himself in a situation he had
never encountered before- he had an open shot to score a goal.
This was his first opportunity for him to score as he was terrible at
soccer, primarily because he frequently daydreamed about being
a president on the field. Screams of anticipation and excitement
began as Akkiki attempted to kick the ball. He struck the ball with
confidence and pride and suprisingly the ball had been kicked so
tremendously strong that it flew 150 metres off the field. Akkiki
was obviously extremely embarrassed and he sequentially ran after
the ball to comfort himself and to get way from the field. He was 2
metres away from the ball until a loud explosion occurred- Akkiki
had sadly stepped on a detrimental land mine.
Everyone at Lolonga soon realised that Akkiki had stepped on a
land mine and most people had bursted into tears due to the demor-
alizing situation. His distressed teammates had instantly called the
ambulance. Minutes later, the reckoning and disheartening sounds
from the ambulance whizzed past around the villiage as the strong
hearted and distressed Akkiki is driven to the hospital with life
threatening injuries.

Momentarily Akkiki opens his eyes and witnesses a monstrous and

unforgettable sight of blood spewing from his arms and legs, and
saw eyes of uncertainty from the paramedics in the ambulance. Ak-
kiki was unconscious as he arrived at the hospital. The doctors had
conversations that were principally about the doubt and uncertainty
of Akikki surviving such harmful injuries. The doctors immediate-
ly had operated on Akkiki and the results were surprisingly posi-
tive. Akkiki woke up escaping with just an amputated leg. He suc-
cessively continued to study incredibly hard which was necessary
if he wished to achieve his life long dream (i.e. become president).
He overcame numerous obstacles throughout his next 5 years. For
instance he was denied enrollment to universities where he wished
to continue his essential studies and practice skill necessary for the
presidential role. Akkiki persisted and persisted until he eventually
was accepted to the best university in Uganda after being rejected
by inferior schools. After attending the university for approximate-
ly 5 years he successfully completed his courses and degrees with
exemplary attendance. He was immediately recruited by politicians
of the State House. After years of being mentored and tutored by
the politicians of Uganda, he was ultimately given the green light
to participate in the presidential election. Akkiki was exceedingly
excited and exhilarated that his dream is almost attained despite
having just one real leg. He spent weeks practicing for the debates,
speeches and campaigns he would inevitably complete. The day in
which he would present his first speech eventually came and was
literally gazing at the intimidating podium where he would give
his speech. Akkiki strongly believes that he had prepared a highly
effective and possibly memorable speech that all voters would ap-
preciate.
I was confidently striding onto the stage. Amongst the vast crowd,
the flashing camera lights were flickering before my eyes. The
cheering was immense as the energy filled up the state house. The
smell of excitement and happiness arose in the air as I walked up
to the podium and proudly stood in front of my people. I cleared
my throat and began my speech to my people. “ To the citizens of
Uganda! Your next president is in your hands! But, you may be
lead into a faulty president such as Kigongo! How can Uganda
trust the doings of this filthy man? It is up to us to change the hap-
penings of this country. We will take in control and make a better
country for us and for you! It is your decision that could make the
difference of great and disastrous. I have made many mistakes in
my life but I can promise you this, the guarantee of a better, greater
country is up to you if I become your next president. There will be
no more poverty, wars and lack of supplies in this country! I thank
my people for a great opportunity to make a fantastic, leading
country.” The crowd went tremendously wild as there was a chant
going on amongst the people. “Akiiki for president! Akiiki for
president!” The chant now filled the room and posts saying “Akiiki
number 1” was swayed about. I raised my hand up to the crowd in
honour and sat back down.
The opposition was intimidated by my speech and the positive
roars of the crowd. Consequently, Kigongo and his cohort filled
with extreme jealously and anxiety, slowly rose to deliver his
speech.

Before he could start, the crowd was booing him from the moment
he stood up. “ The people of Uganda!” The crowd settled down
when he commenced. “ How do we know that this man can guar-
antee such a promise? He is manipulating you people for his own
doings! We cannot trust this man to be our next president. How
do I know this? It is because I’ve seen and had many experiences
with these elections. I cannot let this cunning man take over our
country! We cannot take the risks of Akiiki being our president. The
country and the world might go corrupt! I say, that the promises
isn’t the way to go. One or two of the promises may sound possible
but it is extremely hard to manage all those things.
So think about the risks that we might suffer from, think about if
it is possible that he can guarantee all those promises! People of
Uganda, I ask once again to re-think about how those promises
are going to happen! I can promise that we will strive further as a
country!” The perspiration on Kigongo was noticeable as it was
sliding down from his forehead to the cheeks. Half the crowd was
booing and the other half was cheering Kigongo on. The state
house looked delicate as the wildness of the crowd was rampaging
the room. They came to settle down when the host of the election
came forth. The cameramen at the front brightened up the room
again with those flashes flickering in the background. The host of
this election shook both Kigongo and my hand for a great effect.
Kigongo offered a handshake and I accepted. Kigongo mumbled,
“Good luck in the election”. He smirked and walked off the stage.
I was so confident that I would won the election and became the
president. A couple of days later, Akiiko made the news of using
propoganda.

Kigongo and his fellow party wish to reclaim the reputation and
votes which was theirs to begin with . Kigongo ordered an unex-
pected meeting with his party. As all of Kigongo’s men were seated
at the large circular table, Kigongo ordered that there be silence so
that he may begin. He cleared his throat and addressed his audi-
ence will the following statement ; “ All of you before me today
must wake up and realize what is happening, Akiiki is nothing but
a beginner in politics and he is raking in the votes! We must come
up with manipulative ways or actions in which we can take back
the respect and most of all the votes of our own people !“ Kigongo
ordered his men to think up some different methods in which they
can lower the votes for Akiiki and raise the votes for their own
party. Kigongo dismissed all of his men leaving them with many
thoughts upon their minds. Days passed and Kigongo called his
fellow party together once again. He ordered his party to be seated
and waited for silence in the room. Kigongo then stood up and
turned to the white board positioned behind him.
“ I’m sure that all of you seated before me have come up with
some great plans to bring Akiiki down, down low where he first
started! “ Kigongo started pacing around the room anxiously wait-
ing for one of his members to address the party with some plans.
Minutes passed by and nothing was said as the room was dead with
silence. In good time one of the fellow members of the party stood
up and cleared his throat as he started to speak nervously, feeding
his audience with ideas and plans. The palms of his hands began to
sweat as he announced “ My fellow congressmen, I have put great
thought into plans that we may use to bring Akiiki down, I believe
that by making false accounts and documents that show that Akiiki
has been involved with crime in his past life we can manipulate the
gullible community bellow us!“ As his speech concluded another
one of the members of the party stood up and began to share his
ideas with the rest of his party “ By falsely accusing Akiiki of as-
sassinating someone from our own party and keeping them hos-
tage in Akiiki’s house” “ by doing this my fellow congressmen we
can easily convince that Akiiki is nothing but obsessed with getting
the votes of our people. Kigongo stood up, with a large grin upon
his thin and bony face. “ My Fellow party, I cannot congratulate
enough about the thoughts put into these plans, Go forth now and
remove these thoughts from your mind into the real world” All of
the men were dismissed and the room was filled with emptiness as
the door was shut. The following day Kigongo strolled through his
party’s headquarters to check that the plans were being perfected.
He was impressed and ordered that all the plans are put on his desk
by the end of the day. Time is of the essence and Kigongo began to
worry as there were no folders consisting of all the sabotage plans
on his desk. kigongo’s heart rate started to rise as he was pacing
around the room waiting for a knock on his door. Minutes passed
by and Kigongo heard the first knock on his door for th day. He
ran rapidly to open the door and was very impressed as he saw
one of his Congressmen holding a folder out to him. He shut the
door and began reading. The smirk on his face grew bigger and
bigger as he came closer to the completion of the report. The door
knocked yet again and Kigongo jumped from his seat and opened
it.
It was only a matter of seconds until the door was shut again and
Kigongo had another folder is his hands. He opened the second
folder and began reading. Minutes passed by and Kigongo had
finished reading both of the reports and seemed quite pleased. The
following morning was the day in which Kigongo and his party
put their manipulative plans into action. The whole of the party
were called in the meeting room so that they may be briefed and
have an understanding of what will be happening for the day. All
men were seated at the popular circular table, and were briefed on
what will be happening. As the briefing ended Kigongo was certain
that he would win back the votes of his community. Kigongo got
to work straight away and headed down to the local police station
with a stash of money in his jacket pocket. As he makes his way in
to the police headquarters front desk he removes the bag of money
and places it on the desk. The Police officer seated behind the desk
stared vigorously at the stack of money sitting on the counter. He
picks it up and notices a yellow note sitting on top. The note was
opened and it read the following

Take this money but in return I need you write me up a false

criminal offense under the name of Akiiki Mrumba... Nothing
ever happened

Signed Kigongo.

After the officer finished reading the note he stood up in silence

took the money and went into the back. Minutes passed and the of-
ficer returned with a folder containing all the false information that
will be used to manipulate the ugandan community. Kigongo took
the folder and walked out heading back to the party’s office. As he
enters the office he orders his party to get ready to make a trip to
Akiiki’s house. Kigongo’s party fit in two cars and made their way
to Akiiki’s house. On the arrival to Akiiki’s house they made sure
that he wasn’t around. They all exited their cars and entered his
house via a side window that had been left open.
The one member that was chosen to act as hostage in akiiki’s house
had his clothes torn up and was made as if he was there for days
in complete starvation. After setting up the false hostage the party
left the house leaving the hostage behind. Hours went by and a
town meeting was announced to occur in half an hour. All pers-
onel of the community were asked to attend. As the majority of
the community had come to town square Kigongo stood upon the
microphone cleared his throat and began by saying “ My beloved
people, I have called you to this town meeting to inform you of
some bad news about one of the politics within our society. I am
reffering to Akiiki Mrumba , the man who has made himself out
to be loving and caring towards this community, but I must tell
you all something that may shock you” Kigongo was feeling more
powerful then ever as he had his audience under his control. As he
leaned forward to continue his speech the whole of the community
gasped “ I come before you today to tell you that akiiki Mrumba,
the man who is in running to be president of our community has
been involved with criminal offenses throughout the history of his
life. I will not name these offense in front of you as i dont want to
embaress the poor man. All of this is in hard copy evidence for you
all to see!” Kigongo paused and looked upon his audience. In the
far distance he could see Akiiki making his way to the meeting.
Kigonga started to get nervous, sweat came upon his body. Kigon-
ga took a deep breathe and continued to adress his audience about
the second issue. “ I know you people may be in some shock, but
i have not finished with the bad news, we have found one of our
missing members of our party kept as a hostage wihtin akiiki’s
house! He has been in complete starvation for days !” The Gull-
ible audience were astonished with the speech and looked at akiiki
in a strange manner as he would walk past. His mind was full of
thoughts as to why everyone was acting this way. Kigongo stood
infront of the Microphone for the last time “ I Now dissmiss you
all my beloved community and I hope you are all alright, I know
that I myself was in great shock when these matters caught my
eye” All of the community left with people Groaning and whisper-
ing as they made there way home. Akiiki was left there with no
clue what so ever as to what had happened that day.
The following morning Akiiki made his way to one of his friend’s
house for some company. Akiiki knocked on the door. As he’s
friend opened the door and saw who it was his friend spoke “ What
are you doing here? I dont want to see you after what i heard yes-
terday!” Akiiki felt so lost and upset and asked his good friend to
tell him what had happened the previous day.

After days of Kigongo’s successful attempts to sabotage Akiiki’s

political career, he knew that he was going to win easily, because
of the recent news that Akiiki had not been seen for weeks and
weeks. Akiiki was made out to be like he ran away scared like a
dog with his tail between his legs. As the day of the final election
and the voting drew near kigongo’s body filled with excitement as
he new this election was his. All this propaganda and manipula-
tion he had used had helped him succeed in his quest to become
president. There was only three days before the election and Akiiki
was situated in the harsh and dangerous bushland not far from his
village of Yoocooba. Akiiki sat in the sands and was contemplat-
ing on weather or not he should return and attempt to take over the
corrupt country and turn it into a democratic utopia. He thought of
all the things that Kigongo did to win the hearts of all the African
voters, he was just using a lot of lies and telling the people what
they wonted to here to make them feel better, he used at lot of false
facts like those sheet with all the expenses that I had suppository
used, I knew it was fake but the people of this country didn’t. Then
suddenly it hit him! Like a bullet through a rebel fighters body. The
only way he will win this is by using propaganda and manipulation
his self, so he ran, ran like the wind! As he got to the government
house he began writing some fact documents he was typing so fast
the his fingers were like a huge blear, when he was done he ran to
Kigongo’s home were he was having a electorate party with all his
friends and guards, Akiiki ran in and stood on the podium he began
to sweat, and he gulped his throat and began to speak. “Fellow
voters and all the people of Africa I have here a written confession
that Kigongo has been lying about all the things he has said about
me in the last few weeks”.
A man spoke out in the crowed and said “hay, if kigongo is lying
why does he have written documentation?” Akiiki was so angry
he had veins popping out of his head “ It wasn’t true!” he yelled
at the top of his voice. Another voice from the distance began to
speak. “ We all like Kigongo he his a good leader so why don’t
you crawl back the hole you came from” The rest of the crowd
began to laugh. Akiiki was filled with rage, he stood still and took
a deep breathe and listen to the cool breeze of the African winds,
and then something clicked to him and he began to speak. “ my
fellow Africans have you ever stopped to feel the beautiful African
breeze”. Everyone stopped. “Its so nice and cool and refreshing
isn’t it. Do you know what kigongo is doing to our nice breeze he
is polluting it with all the mining factories and the iron and the coal
factories to.” Some people stopped and thought about what he had
to say and realized he was right, but most of the people thought
and said “no one cares about what you have to say” then they all
started chanting “Kigonogo, Kigonogo, Kigonogo” then they look
at him and seen kigonogo stand up and approach the podium and
walk up to Akiiki and said with his very high and mighty voice
“ good work son you have done what no one else could have....”
The crowd look at him like the things Akiiki said was true and the
document was real, then he began to speak again with a sly and
shifty little smirk on his bony face and kept on speaking “... you
have made yourself look like a total idiot in front of all the commu-
nity.” he began to chuckling like Santa. Then Akiiki erupted like a
science fare volcano and swung as hard as he could at the man who
smeared his political carer, and hit his fat cheeks he drop to the
flaw like a bag of potatoes. Then Akiiki smiles and says you make
a very bad president and spat in his face, as soon as he did that
vial and very disrespectful act the guards jumped up and grabbed
him so hard his arms went purple and Kigonogo said “take this
disrespectful scum bag around the back, and I never wont to see
him again” As he did this he slipped a 100 dolor note in his pocket,
and the crowed began to cheer and say very rood and disrespectful
things to Akiiki.
Akiiki was yelling out to them all “ All I wonted to do was to save
your lives you have been corrupted by this man has been taking
over our country from the start of his Candace you don’t under-
stand all you people have been corrupted bye this man he will take
more of your money to fund his little holidays and he will lie about
it and say that it was about the benefit of the country that he went
and found out new ideas from the other government types, you
people must fight back, Rebel and win our beautiful land back”
as they dragged him away a tire dripped from his eye and he, they
through him against the wall and then he closed his eyes and said
quietly “make it quick” and then a large BANG noise chilled the
bodies all the people of the party. As Akiiki’s head was splattered
against the wall like a painter splashing paint onto a canvas, that
was the last time anyone had ever heard from Akiiki in the African
community.

Beep Beep Beeeep, the sound of the electrocardiogram starts to

shows signs of life. Doctors and nurses rush to the surgery room
and to their amazement, find Akiiki rise from the medical bed,
showing great strength since just having recovered from a coma.
Doctors stressfully urge Akiiki to rest, “you have been in a coma
for a month” said one of the Doctors. But but? Akiiki stumbles for
words, how could I have been in a coma for a month he thinks to
himself. In the whole suspense of the moment Akiiki hadn’t even
realised he was missing a leg. Suddenly a doctor’s shadow falls
over Akiiki and as Akiiki tries to rise out of bed and investigate
what is happening, he is restrained by nurses and the doctor gives
him a shot of morpheme.

Later that day after Akkiki’s morpheme had worn off, he spent
time contemplating over the last few days of his life which he had
believed were real. He couldn’t quite grasp the idea of being in a
coma after he had so vividly experienced all these events over the
past month. He remembered every day as clear as a crystal in his
mind. He can’t help but feel feelings of resentment that his dream
had literally become a nightmare.
Dream on President

Akkiki is extremely angered how one individual cannot overthrow

the current failed systems and corrupt government of his country.
Akkiki despises the abuse of power and propaganda by the govern-
ment. He sadly concludes in solemnly saying, “I give up, I can’t do
it, their too strong and powerful, sorry mum and dad, I just cant do
it”. He soon bursts into tears and exclaims, “I’m SORRY!”.
