Friendship Festival 2011:
more than 5000 people during the week end!
9th and 10th December, Phare Ponleu Selpak hosted the 3rd edition of the Friendship Festival. Two days of entertainment for everyone: community members, Cambodian citizens from Battambang and abroad, expatriates, tourists, young and old people. On these 2 days, famous and rising stars shared the stage with well known artists. Thanks to all artists who were involved: Preap Sovath, Pou Klaing, Khemara Sereymon, Dub Addiction, Mr Kroen, PPSs artists, DJ DTonn, Dj Chase, Dj Matoo, Dj Edwardowski, Dj Gorimaa and many more. Thanks also go to all volunteers and staff members who helped us make this event possible. A special mention to the PPS musicians who accompanied during 2 days and without much preparation the biggest pop stars of Cambodia. See you next year for the 4th Friendship Festival!

December our artists did a lot of outside performances: several shows at the Paul Dubrule Tourism School in Siem Reap, our long-time partner, in Phnom Penh at Sparks, with a new aerial silk number choreographed by John-Gunnar Field, and at the French school Lyce Descartes, where our show Happy Time was the Christmas event offered to the amazed children. On New Years Eve, we will have shows both in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh with performances created for these events at Victoria Hotel, while other students from the group 5 will perform at Raffles under the stage direction of our teachers Huot Hieng and Kim Tina. of our students got scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia for a 3 month training in the Vietnam National Circus School started the 10th of December. Cheam Vanny, Kong Tida, and Neam Mann participated to this workshop with artists from 2 others countries: Laos and Vietnam. The Ministry covers all costs dedicated to this project which aims to improve exchanges between these 3 countries.

During December, we had the visit of Lee Sang Joon, Director of Culture and Tourism of the city of Geochang, Professor Mijung Im, Executive Director of Music for One, and members of the Music for Ones board of directors. This new partnership includes: - training for Phare Ponleu Selpak musicians - production of concerts in Cambodia by Korean and Cambodian musicians - production of concerts in Korea by Korean and Cambodian musicians The first step of this project will lead to concerts in Battambang in February 2012. PPS will prepare a memorandum of understanding to finalize this partnership.

Exhibition at University of Battambang

tion opening of 25 artworks of PPS visual arts school students, with live painting, music, and sponsoring gift. This exhibition stayed until the 20th of December. It was seen the first time during the Friendship Festival by a large audience on the 9th of December. Those artworks are a part of an awareness campaign called Masculinity, violence against women and gender, commissioned by Paz y Desarrollo (pazydesarrollo.org) and produced by Phare Ponleu Selpak. Because this campaign is dedicated to a young audience, PyD chooses the University of Battambang to encounter students aged from 15 to 24. This is the first step of this 9 month project which includes this exhibition in 11 different cities, theatre performances in 24 provinces and the creation of a calendar and comic books.

rak Ke, an illustrator at Sonleuk Thmey studio and Lon Lao, co-founder and visual arts teacher, left on the 28th of December to follow a 3-month training at the Ecole Pivaut in Nantes, France. 5 of our students have already participated in this training which enables professional development. Sou Sophy and Pen Robit came back from Ecole Pivaut on the 23rd of December 2011. After their 3 months training, they were also able to spend some time in Paris to visiting museums and friends. Sophy is a teacher in PPS Visual Arts School and specializes in perspective and structure. Robit is a young artist with exhibitions planed in Phnom Penh and Singapore.

Poy Chhunly wrote the synopsis and a workshop was organized with Ang Choulean and Preap Chanmara to explore the beliefs, rituals, costumes and customs of the 12th, 13th and 18th centuries in Cambodia. PPS starts to do the 10 first minutes of this long movie called Visit Angkor. he 7th of December, the troupe of theatre came back from tour in France where there played The Terrible but Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia, piece from Hlne Cixous. More than 30 artists spent one month and a half to perform this piece co produced with le Thtre du Soleil and in collaboration with the Festival Sens Interdit.This piece is directed by Delphine Cottu and Georges Bigot. It was a great success, a lot of good feedbacks from audience and artist, and also huge press coverage in the national newspapers.

Ponleu Selpak will reposition itself in a very dynamic way in social issues in Battambang. New partnerships will lead to a huge work focus on the family support and fight against poverty. To do this, PPS will work closely with the Municipality of Battambang and all the social partners of the city, with a support of the European Commission, the World Childhood Foundation, UNICEF and Friends International. hare Ponleu Selpak will strengthen its vocational training programs. From this perspective, we will open an applied arts school especially with the support of CCFD and the Ecole Pivaut of Nantes, France. A new curriculum will be set for the Visual Arts School. New partnerships are also in progress for the music school, circus school, and acting school.
