CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.

1 Background of The Study Everyone must use language to communicate each other, in order to they can understand what people say. Besides, language is also a tool of communication. According to Morris (1969: 736) states that language is an aspect of human behaviour that involves the use of vocal sound in meaningful pattern to form, express and communicate thought and feeling.

Language can not be separated by the role of community in the world, because the existance of language really supports all people to communicate with another person. Moreover, language and society are one of the branches of linguistics knowledge. The subject is called as ³ socioliguistics´ furthemore, sociolinguistics is the study of the ways people uses the language in social interaction (Sabilah Fardini,2001:7). Sometimes people use different languages in a certain situation or another situation even the lecturers, when they are teaching in class. And it can be called as the system of communication. The lecturers use two language while they are teaching leraning in class, it was called bilingualism, bilingualism is tend to mix his/her code other language when she/he communicate with other bilinguals and monolinguals in their speech community. In bilingualism there is also speech community that have correlation with bilingual, where is speech community is one whose member share at least a single speech variety and the norm for its appropriate use (Fishman,1972:28). It means that someone use a language in many speech varieties depend on the situation. In order to the audience can understand what are they are talking about. And sometimes they are using code, code is system of words, letters, symbols,ect. That represent other, is used for secret message or for presenting or recording information briefly (oxford advance leraner¶s dictionary, 1989:218). There are two kinds of code. Firstly, code mixing and the Second is code switching. In this case language is studied; Arabic language is the second language for students in arabic courses. The lecturer usually use a language more than one and as an alternate method to explain the material, to the students, especially for arabic lecturers. They usually do not only use arabic but they also try to translate into indonesian language. In the processing teaching and learning the lecturer occasionally employ two languages either indonesian and arabic to make their students understand the leson by themselves. The usage of language varieties to themselves adapt to the role and the situation, because of the existance of another participant. In class, lecturer face various student with different backgroung knowledge, langage mastery, language learning and environment. He classroom there will be some interaction happen between the lecturer and students. As we know the success of teaching and learning

To know the factors influencing the lecturers of arabic courses using code mixing at the first grade students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Based on the descriptive above. Arabic courses is provided to all people that want to know how to speak arabic well. 2.2 Statement of The Problem 1. Thereforewhen a lecturer adapt to different language varieties. because of the writer wants to know how the processing of teaching learning there. What are the forms of code mixing used by the lecturers of arabic courses at the first grade students in University of Muhammadiayh Malang? 2. One of the examples of code mixing that it was employed by the lecturers is in arabic courses. for example he/she mixes the language between arabic and indonesian together in single utterance. What are the factors influencing the lecturers of arabic courses uusing code mixing at the first grade students in University of Malang Malang? 1. .code mixing is a communication strategy used by bilingual in which the speaker of language A transfer element of language B to A (Hammers and Blanc. the lecturers or bilingual are to able to select the usage of code mixing exactly to support easygoing the material that instructed by them. so it is hope that the result will present something importance of significance as bellow: 1. this study focuses on the code mixing employed by the lecturers of arabic courses at the first grade students in university of Muhammadiyah Malang. To know the forms of code mixing used by the lecturers of arabic courses at the first grade students in University of Malang Malang. Exactly it will occur code mixing. when the lecturers are empleying it they do not determine the time. Furthemore.so when the lecturer explains the lesson the students are supposed to be able to understand it well. Arabic Courses is one of the subject that it provided by university of muhammadiyah Malang in campus 2.3 Purpose of The Study The result of this study is expected to give a clear descriptive of the code mixing terms. as a result. In addition by the understanding of code mixing. Moereover.1989:266) it means that the speaker use the second language then he/she translate it to another language. It was not just for students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang only.process depend on a good communication both of them. So the writer is interested to discuss the study undertittle´ A STUDY ON CODE MIXING USED BY THE LECTURERS OF ARABIC COURSES AT THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIAYH MALANG. 1.

Practically.5 Scopes and Limitation This study focus on code mixing used by the lecturers of arabic courses at the first grade studentts in University of Muhammadiyah Malang is a scope. Arabic courses is one of the providing course in university of Muhammadiyah Malang in campus 2 . 1. 1. code mixing and code switching and to enrich our knowledge and insight of sociolinguistics subject. And the limitation of this study is focus on the the lecturers of arabic courses at the first grade students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. this study is expected to the students to know and understanding various language that it was delivered by the lecturers of arabic courses at the first grade in University of Muhammadiayh Malang.4 Siqnificant of The Study Theoritically. 3.1.6 Keys of The Terms To avoid mis interpretation it is necessary to define the key terms as follows: 1. this study is aimed to help in explaining code where there are two codes. Bilingualism is tend to mix his/her code other language when she/he communicate with other bilinguals and monolinguals in their speech community. Code Mixing is the usage of both languages together by the conversant to the exter that they change from one language to the other in the course of a single utterance 2.
