According to The Economic Antidote by Brian Wesbury, Washingtons latest legislation the one extending the payroll tax cut may be the worst piece of legislation ever passed. The payroll tax cut does nothing for anyone unemployed. The 2% cut in Social Security tax does not boost economic output. This means the government must make up any revenue loss by cutting spending (which it never does), borrowing more money, or raising taxes on someone else. At best, taking money from one group to give to another is a zero sum game. The initial payroll tax cut was in place for all of 2011 and comparing consumption of 4.3% in 2011 to consumption of 4.2% in 2010, the cut did nothing. Two year unemployment benefits have done nothing to create jobs. The reason unemployment is so high these days is because government is so big. The US needs to cut spending, not increase it. Every bill Congress passes is supposed to be paid for by offsetting cuts in spending or tax hikes. This explains why Congress was unwilling to do more than the two month extension on the payroll tax. Two months is cheaper to fund than a full year. Even two month cuts need to be paid for, so Congress levied more fees on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This just adds more fees to home ownership. So what do fees on mortgage providers have to do with social security tax cuts? The answer is nothing. This tax cut just makes our already underfunded Social Security plan even more underfunded and makes home ownership and refinancing more expensive. Back in 1997, Congress passed a balanced budget act that was supposed to control spending, partly by holding back the growth rate of Medicare spending. Medicare payments to doctors were supposed to be held down by a formula. Congress passes a Doc Fix every year avoiding the formula being applied. President Obama promised roughly $500 billion of future Medicare cuts based on a similar formula to help pay for Obamacare. What are the chances the formula will never get applied? If the formula is never applied, where is the $500 billion coming from? The President and Congress when faced with the choice of cutting spending or making a constituent madthey always choose the constituentsand not the ones who pay for it all. The President and Congress kicked the can down the road on eleven other items as well. Republicans used this bill to force President Obama to make a decision within 60 days on the Keystone Pipeline extension. This project would have already been put in place if private businesses and private money were the only deciding factors. But no, President Obama has embraced subsidizing unprofitable solar and wind power, while holding up and penalizing traditional, privatelyfunded, carbon-based fuel sources. From an economic point of view the pipeline is a no-brainer, making this the only economically sane part of the bill. Any business that ran their business like the government currently does would be out of business. Margaret Thatcher said, The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples money. That is exactly what is happening in Europe right now. The Welfare State has come to its logical conclusion bankruptcy. Our governments seem unwilling to deal with issues that are relatively straight-forward. Its not hard to understand. Spending needs to be paid for by taxes, but taxes undermine the incentive to produce and invest and push business to other countries. The United States is in the car with Thelma and Louise headed for the Grand Canyon. We are not at the Grand Canyon yet. We can change course before it is too late. The 2012 election is a very important election. We need leaders that are for Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets, and Limited Government. Pay very close attention to the man behind the curtain!
