Building a computer Abdelraouf Djellal COMP251
Scientists have built a language that operates on that one principle. to keep them protected. Apart from that. Java for example. motherboard. that language is called binary. the case. . The processor does subtraction. flows through all the parts and exits from the exhaust in the back. but at the most fundamental level all the processor is dealing with is an electrical signal being on or off. because computer parts tend to get hot. addition and multiplication. on or off. Heat is the enemy of computer parts. and having enough airflow is vital to the proper functioning of a computer. The computer needs a case to put all the parts in. The second part is called the power supply.Building a computer A computer as a whole might seem complex and intimidating to a lot of people. processor (CPU). Generally in a case the air enters from the front. storage and optical drive. The power supply does not affect the performance of a computer. A case not only protects the computer components that are inside but it also provides adequate ventilation. all sorts of languages have been built on top of that and eventually languages that work on the highest level. these 0s and 1s simply correspond to electrical signal being on or off. memory. and 2 electricity has only two states. The power supply's function is to take regular AC power and convert it into usable power for the various components in the case. Computers operate on electricity. power supply. I will explain at the most basic level how a computer works. video card. There are many complex languages between binary and Java. these parts are. Binary is solely 0s and 1s. These 0s and 1s are referred to as bits and a group of eight of these bits is called a byte. There are seven main parts that are necessary in building a computer.
The fifth component of a computer is the memory. . AGP). power plugs. It resides on the CPU socket on the motherboard. add-on slots (PCI. Intel uses the LGA socket. the program loads information onto the RAM. Once plugged in.Building a computer 3 The next part is the motherboard. the function of memory is basically to allow a repository where data can be stored and needs to be access very quickly. which allows you to plug in your mouse and keyboard. PCI-e. RAM in its most basic form looks like a flat stick that is know as a DIMM (dual in-line memory module). memory slots. Essentially a motherboard will have a socket for the processor. The heatsink fan is very necessary. subtraction and multiplication that the processor does. and under the CPU heatsink fan. AMD is using a more standard method for processors that has been around for a while. which uses non conventional CPU contacts and not pins. There are two main companies that manufacture desktop processors. as well as your speakers. The motherboard performs the essential job of tying all the different parts in the computer together. also know as the central processing unit. The fourth component is the CPU. that information will eventually be processed by the CPU. because in doing the addition. and finally at the back are ports that are exposed at the back of the computer. network cable and anything else that would go into the input output. also know as the random access memory. When you load up a new program on your computer. and that is that they have the pins on the processors themselves. so you have to make sure that you vent that heat off of it. it produces a lot of heat. AMD and Intel.
An optical drive will basically allow you to read. because some motherboards have video integrated on board. that is another option for people who need storage. or HDMI. They are very fast.Building a computer The next component is the video card. data loaded onto it will stay there regardless of the state of the computer. solid state drives. but there is a new development called SSD.5'' for laptops and 3. there are no moving parts inside. usually its either DVI. data loaded onto it is only there as long as the computer is on. DVDs. The memory that I referenced to earlier is temporary.5'' for desktops. usually on the PCI. They come in two sizes 2. it will generally come on an optical media . especially price per gigabyte when compared to the bigger and older mechanical hard drives. also know as a discrete video card. Some Optical drives will you to write to optical discs as well as reading them. but since the technology is newer they are generally a bit more expensive. A monitor plugs into one of those ports and translates that signal into video. Bluray and much more. CDs. SSD. The second option for storage is the much newer technology. The last component of a computer is the optical drive. These video cards have different outputs on the back. A discrete video card has much better performance when compared to the integrated video module. The main important reason I listed the optical drive as a necessary part is when you initially load an operating system onto your newly built computer. AGP and more recently the PCI-express slot. SSD uses NAND flash memory. The video card is not necessarily essential. Usually computers have the option 4 of installing a standalone video card. A mechanical hard drive has spinning platters inside and a reading head that will go over them and read the data off of it. Hard drives on the hand are permanent storage. a couple of years ago I would have called this category hard drives instead of storage. VGA. The next components is storage.
because they spin at a lower RPM. which means that you only plug the cables needed. At the top of this case there is a 200mm exhaust fan. you notice that there two latches that help removing the side panel. and as I mentioned earlier in this essay. This case retails at around $180. This PSU is . For the power supply I chose the Thermaltake ToughPower 1350W. I really like larger fans. DVDs. air enters from the front. you can use the optical drive to playback CD. For the case I chose the Corsair Obsidian 650D. moves through the inside of the case and exists through the exhaust fan either on the back or top of the case. I will go back to the main topic of this paper. Apart from that. there are holes in the case itself that will allow you to hide the cabling and allow greater cooling. there aren't any screws. in my opinion this is the most fun part of building a computer. Another thing to consider is just your cooling in general. There are a few things that I really like about this case. and still move a lot of air. it is a statement for many computer enthusiasts to have a nice looking case. This is a modular power supply. Also after installing the operating system. 5 I will go over the components I described earlier and will choose the best parts available in the market right now. which is how to build a computer. So now that I have gone over all the necessary parts of a computer. this case has a minimalistic profile which looks great. so it is very user friendly. thus avoiding a cluster of unused cables blocking airflow and diminishing the overall beauty of the system. keeping in mind a budget cap of $2600. and install programs. The first step in building a computer is choosing your components. This case has a great wire management system. Starting with the side panel.Building a computer disc. so they stay really quiet.
It has 4 DDR3 RAM sockets that support up to 32GB. I chose this RAM because it quiet affordable and very fast for the price. The core components. This motherboard is highly customizable one.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB. The RAM that I chose is G. unless if bluray is necessary. For the Optical Drive I chose a simple LG 22X Super-Multi DVD Burner/Reader. which could easily quintuple the price.Building a computer rated a 1350 watts. This optical drive can read and write both CDs and DVDs. It seems like a small sized drive. a 160 GB drive. which is more than most computers need. it allows greater control on the CPU in terms of overclocking and voltage control. this isn't a component one would spend a 6 large amount of money one. I chose SSDs instead of the conventional mechanical hard drives to not have a bottleneck at this level.0 ports and HDMI ports. The SSD I chose is the Intel 320 Series. The price for this optical drive is $16. CPU. This motherboard has an excellent onboard sound which is there to avoid buying the extra sound card. This SSD is . This CPU is an LGA 1155 type socket and the motherboard I chose to go with is the ASRock Z68 Extreme7. It also has the latest USB 3. but the computer I am building will be mainly used for gaming not storage. the motherboard $350. that cost in the upwards of a $100. RAM.40 GHz. which are 4 DIMMs of 4GB. but I picked this unit to future proof this computer and to also have enough power to juice all the components involved. which I believe is the best deal out there. and 5 PCI-E 16x slots which will allow me to install plenty of video cards and extra goodies. The price for the CPU is $320. and motherboard that I chose are an Intel Core-i7 which has a clocked speed of 3. and the RAM $80. and an L2 cache of 8MB. This PSU retails at $300.
This card is rather unique because of its X2 label. because this is a component one would actually build a gaming computer around. The price tag on this video card is $500.Building a computer incredibly fast. I already had in mind what the graphics card would be. and all of the components cost added up to $2096. a traditional hard drive reads and writes at around 80 Mbps. A similar computer from Dell or Asus would cost more than double this price.newegg. I did my shopping on www. There is one component left and that is the operating system. and speakers. monitor. . I chose Windows 7 Ultimate edition because of its phenomenal gaming support and capabilities. I chose the VisionTek Radeon HD 6870 x2. and yet costs just $250. it reads and writes at speeds above 200Mbps. 7 I kept the video card last. A copy of windows 7 Ultimate editions costs $100 dollars. There is $500 left that will be used to buy a mouse. My computer is now built. keyboard.com. X2 means that there are two graphic processing units on it. the performance would be equal to two separate 6780. This car has HDMI and DVI ports on it which are necessary to take advantage of its superior quality.
