IS4835 Information Management of Financial Services

IS4835 Group Project


Requirements: This group project is to be done by groups of 5 students. In this course, we examine the application of information technology for information management in the financial services industry. In this group project, you will conduct your own research in this regard. In particular, you will: (1) Identify and describe an area of application of information technology for information management in the financial services industry. (2) Discuss how this application of technology enables the associated business processes and address various aspects of information management in the associated domain. (3) Examine the need for information security, and how it is addressed, if at all. (4) Consider the risks and challenges associated with this use of technology, and suggest feasible solutions to circumvent these. (5) Conceptualize and design possible expansion or extension of the application of information technology for information management in the specified domain. Deliverables and Due dates: There will be THREE deliverables for the group project. ALL deliverables should be well written, free of typos, and logically organized, printed on A4 paper with 1 margin around all sides, 12-point Times New Roman font size and 1-line spacing. A cover page should be included in each deliverable with project title, group name and group member list, which does not count into the page limit. * Note: No late submissions (both hard and soft copies) will be accepted. A. Proposal (3%) Start early! Start by identifying areas in the financial services industry where information technology is being used. Remember that the financial services industry deals with the management of money. Consider different ways money is used, transferred, or even transformed. Once you have identified an application domain, conduct your research. Try to find out as much as possible in this area. In the proposal, include: - Background - Discussion of relevant aspects of information management - Description of the use of information technology in the proposed application domain Deliverable: One cover page, and NO more than 8 pages of proposal contents stated above, including tables, figures and references, etc.

Final Report (12%) Your final report will extend your proposal and address each of the five areas listed above. Your final report will include: - Introduction of the proposed application domain. What is its relevance and significance in todays financial services sector? - Discussion of relevant aspects of information management. What types of data and / or information arise in this domain? How are they managed (collected, analyzed, )? - Description of the role of information technology in key business processes and / or decision processes. What technologies are used? How do they help? In what ways are they improvements over traditional methods, if any? - Analysis of the specific information security needs in this application domain. Which aspect(s) are particularly relevant? How are these addressed? - Examination of the risks and challenges with the use of technology in this domain. Are there any potential negative impacts with continued widespread use? Will changes in external environments post threats to these uses of technology? How can these be addressed? - Design of possible extension and expansion of current infrastructure. Can you think of potential improvements over existing technologies or their implementation? How feasible are they? Deliverable: One cover page, and NO more than 20 pages of final report, including tables, figures and references, etc. Due date: Soft copy: submit via the group project final report submission link in Blackboard by April 17, 2012 (Week 13) 9:30 A.M. Hard copy: submit before class start on April 17, 2012 (Week 13) 9:30 A.M. C. Oral Presentation (15%) Conduct an oral presentation in the week 13 tutorial for not more than 20 minutes, including 2 minutes Q&A. Presentation sequence will be determined by drawing lots in week 12. All group members must contribute to and participate in the presentation.
