1. About the Competition


1.1. The ILS Law College, Pune and the Indian Law Society are jointly organizing the 6th Professor S.P. Sathe Memorial Annual National Moot Court Competition 2011-2012 in memory of Professor S. P. Sathe, former Principal of the College, and a renowned scholar of Constitutional and Administrative Law.

2. Schedule
2.1. Following is the schedule for the competition. 3. Participation and Eligibility


3.1. The host team will participate in the Competition. 3.2. An institution can send a team of three members, who shall be students of the five-year or three-year full time LL.B. degree course. 3.3. Each team shall be allotted a code on registration, which shall identify the team throughout the competition. Teams must not reveal the identity of their Institution or any other personal details in the written submissions or at any time during the Competition, or at the request of the judges. Revelation of identity shall ensue such consequences as the authorities may deem fit. 3.4 All team members are required to carry their college/university identity cards at the time of registration and during the competition.

4. Moot Proposition
4.1. Requests for clarification of the proposition by the participating teams may be sought before 6th February 2012 by email addressed to sathefoundation@gmail.com with subject 6th Sathe MootClarification. Clarifications issued by the drafters to the proposition shall be communicated to all participating teams, to the email address indicated in the registration form.

5. Team Registration
5.1. Each team shall send duly completed registration form (enclosed) to the following address by post / courier as well as by email

Page 3 of 7 (sathefoundation@gmail.com) with subject Sathe Moot-registration which must reach the Coordinator on or before 30th January 2012. The Coordinator, Prof Sathe Moot Court Competition, C/o The Principal, ILS Law College, Law College Road, Pune 411004. All communication about the competition must be addressed to the Coordinator. 5.2. A Demand Draft of Rs. 2000/- drawn in favour of The Principal, ILS Law College drawn on any nationalized bank and payable at Pune must be enclosed with the registration form towards registration fee. 5.3. Registration of teams from outside Pune is restricted to 20 on first come first basis. 5.4. Any change in the composition of the registered team shall be informed by an email addressed to sathefoundation@gmail.com by 14th February 2012, by the Head/Registrar of the participating Institution.

6. Oral Rounds
6.1. The competition will be held in three rounds: preliminary, semi-finals and the final. 6.2. In the preliminary round, each team will have thirty minutes to present their case. This time may be divided between the two speakers, but each speaker shall speak for a minimum of twelve minutes. In the semi-final and final rounds, each team will have fortyfive minutes to present their case, and each speaker must speak for a minimum of twenty minutes. 6.3. In the preliminary rounds, each team will be presenting arguments twice, once for each side. Four teams will proceed to the semifinals, on the basis of win points and score points. 6.4. Memorial marks will not be counted in the preliminary rounds. They will be counted as part of the team score in the semi-finals and the final. 6.4. Winners of semi-finals in each court shall proceed to the finals. Winners will be determined on the basis of marks.

7. Written Memorials - Contents


7.1. The written memorials shall contain the following: 1. Cover page stating: i. Name of the Court, ii. Title of the Competition, iii. Name of the Case iv. Title of the Document

Page 4 of 7 v. A separate page at the end of the memorial stating the name of the institution, and names of participants (This page will be removed from the memorial)

8. Written Memorials - format


8.1. The memorials shall be in Times New Roman, font size 12 pts for text and 10 pts for footnotes. Except for the cover page, table of contents and table of authorities, the text of all parts of the memorial shall be spaced at 1.5. All citations of authorities must be given only as footnotes and not in the text of the arguments. 8.2. Footnotes may be single-spaced, and shall contain only citations. Footnotes shall not contain any explanation. 8.3. Quotations of 50 words or more shall be block quoted (i.e. right and left indented) and may be single-spaced. 8.4. Pages in the memorial should be numbered. Reference to corresponding page numbers should be given in the Table of Contents and Index of Authorities. 8.6. In the memorial teams shall observe a uniform mode of citation. Teams may refer to (i) Basic Legal Citation available at http://www.law.cornell.edu/citation/, or (ii) OSCOLA: The Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities available at http://denning.law.ox.ac.uk/published/oscola_2006.pdf. (iii) any other standard legal citation 8.7. Memorials not fulfilling the above formatting requirements shall be subject to penalty points.

9. Submission of Memorial
9.1. The last date of submission of memorials is 3:00 pm of 14 th February 2012. Memorials received later shall be subject to penalty of 2 marks per day. Memorials received after 16th February 2012 shall not be assessed. 9.2. Environment concerns compel us to prescribe that teams shall avoid use of plastic sheets or covers, or spiral binding or any other plastic material in their memorials. Memorials shall be printed on both sides of the sheet.

Page 5 of 7 9.3. Each participating team shall prepare memorials for both sides i.e. Petitioner and Respondent. 9.4. The teams shall send a softcopy of the Memorials to sathefoundation@gmail.com under subject Sathe Moot-Memorials. The soft copy shall be in MS Word Document [2003 or 2003 compatible version (docx)] for Windows. Each memorial shall be a single file/document. The two files shall be named Memorial for the Petitioners and Memorial for the Respondent respectively. While sending the softcopy by email, the subject shall be Memorial Name of the Institution. e.g., Memorial ABC Law College, Pune. 9.5. The team shall send eight (8) paper copies (four for each side) printed on A4 size paper by post/courier. Please send memorials sufficiently in advance to reach us before the deadline. The paper copy must correspond with the soft copy in all aspects. 9.6. Memorials must be properly bound or tied.

10. Scoring
10.1. Oral Round Scoring 10.1.1. There will be a panel of two Judges for the preliminary, and three judges for the semi-finals and the final round.

Memorials shall be marked with respect to contents and compliance with rules. 10.2.2. Each memorial shall be marked for a maximum of 50 marks. 10.2.3. 11. Conduct of Proceedings and Competition


11.1. The judges decision shall be final as to conduct of proceedings in the oral rounds. Any grievance in the conduct of the competition may be addressed to the Coordinator of the Competition, whose decision shall be final.

12. Awards and Certificates

13. Accommodation
13.1. Accommodation shall be provided only for three members of each team. 13.2. Accommodation will be provided from the 24th morning to 27th morning. 13.3. The details of accommodation facilities will be provided on confirmation of registration and participation.

14. Miscellaneous
14.1. Dress Code: Gentlemen: Western formals, i.e., white shirt, black trousers and tie. Ladies: Indian formals, i.e., white sari or salwar-kurta, or Western formals, i.e., white shirt, black trousers/skirt. Wearing a coat is not compulsory, but recommended. Teams shall not wear bands and gowns. 14.2. Copyright in the moot proposition and Rules vests with the ILS Law College, Pune. 14.3. ILS Law College can use, communicate or otherwise publish any material (contents of memorials or arguments of participating teams) for educational purposes in any manner and in any medium. 14.4. The organisers reserve the right to change these rules as may be necessary for effective completing of the moot. 14.5. The decision of the Coordinator Dr. Nitish Nawsagaray, Faculty, ILS Law College, Pune, regarding any aspect of the Competition shall be final. 14.6.
