We re so glad to be a part of the modern world where everything seems possible with just a wink of an eye. It was such a nice feeling too, that in the ANIME world, they seem to be more alive than ever. Thanks to the technology made possible by electricity. Let s join Dragz the dragonfly and Jazz the jazzy sunflower in their e-power adventure.
Hello there friends how are you doing today. I just can t wait to tell you that Here comes Dragz. I wonder what news he brings this time.

That come on tell us, we re excited to know what it is.

That it s my birthday today (joke). Kidding aside, I am happy today because at last our community will have electricity of its own. Isn t that something to celebrate about?

That s good news. Now I can dance all day. We really have to celebrate. And for you dear friends enjoy the activities prepared for you while I and Dragz will enjoy the day.

Correct! So what are you waiting for? Get started and later on you can join us in our celebration.

Introduction Electricity is a convenient form of energy used at home. It is what makes our appliances and gadgets works. It cannot be mined as coal nor drilled from wells like oil. How is it produced? Matter consists of tiny particles called atoms which are composed of two electrically charged particles protons and

electrons. The protons are positively charged, while the electrons are negatively charged. This learning material as part of our PROJECT SMILE (Science Made Interesting for Learning Enhancement) aims that you achieve the following after going through all the activities: a. Describe how electrical energy is formed and used.

Activity #1

Look at the picture below and identify how electrical energy was used and utilized. Include also into what forms electrical energy can be transferred. Complete the table below. An example was given for you.

Activity #2

Try performing this activity.

1. Tear a piece of paper into very small pieces. 2. Comb your hair several times. Then bring the comb near the pieces of paper but do not let the comb touch the paper. 3. Observe what happens. 4. Repeat steps 2, but this time, bring the comb near one of your arms. 5. Observe what happens to the hair of your arm.

Analyze and Conclude: 1. What happened to the pieces of paper when you put the comb near to it? 2. Did the same thing happen when you place it near the hairs of your arm? 3. What form of energy cause this attraction?

Activity #5

Electrical Energy Generation

1. One of your classmates will stand near the switch of your classroom lights. The teacher will signal him to switch on the light. Observe what happens. 2. Your teacher will plug the electric fan to an outlet. Observe what happens. 3. Using your teacher s cell phone, he will let you listen to a stored tune. Your teacher will then remove the battery pack of the cell phone. What do you think will happen? Will the phone still operate? 4. Your teacher will then return the battery pack to its place and switch on the unit. Observe what happens.

Analyze and Conclude:

1. What happens to the fluorescent bulbs as the main switch is turned on? 2. What happens to the electric fan when it is plugged into an outlet? 3. What happens to the cell phone when the battery pack was removed? Can it operate without the battery pack? 4. What is stored in the battery pack that can be converted to electrical energy to be used by the cell phone? 5. What can you conclude in this activity?

Activity #6 List down electrical devices that you think are most important. From your list choose the five most important devices. Rank them from the most important (1) up to the least important (5). Compare your choices with your classmates and come with the list of the first five. Use the table given below.

Rank

Electrical Devices

Rank 1 2 3 4 5

First Five Electrical Devices

Analyze and Conclude 1. Do you have the same list with that of your

classmates? 2. What are the fist five electrical devices that

were chosen by the class? 3. Why are these devices very important?

Are you enjoying yourselves? You re almost there keep it up.

One of the most important forms of energy in today s highly technological world is electrical energy. Electric current provides the energy of labor saving appliances such as the electric iron, washing machines, and others. Electrical activity takes place constantly everywhere in the

universe. Electrical forces hold molecules together. The nervous systems of animals work by means of weak electric signals transmitted between neurons (nerve cells). Electricity is generated, transmitted, and converted into heat, light, motion, and other forms of energy through natural processes, as well as by devices built by people. Electricity is an extremely versatile form of energy. It can be generated in many ways and from many different sources. It can be sent almost instantaneously over long distances. Electricity can also be converted efficiently into other forms of energy, and it can be stored. Because of this versatility, electricity plays a part in nearly every aspect of modern technology. Electricity provides light, heat, and mechanical power. It makes telephones, computers, televisions, and countless other necessities and luxuries possible.

Dragz and Jazz had a good time celebrating their stardom. But time flies fast that its time to say good bye at least for the time being.

That s it for today my friends. It s time for me to go. I had a nice time with you.

That I will do. I hope too, that the STCS teachers will keep up with what they started.
