Tips on protection against harsh weather
NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
Winter weather depletes skin,
but not merely because of low tem-
peratures. Low humidity is equally
to blame, so be sure to protect and
replenish skin in the following ways:
nA drop in temperature and hu-
midity can lead to depleted, chapped,
even painfully sore skin.
nThe frst step: Visit a profession-
al skin therapist for a personalized
“baseline” assessment of the skin’s
condition and needs. “A licensed skin
therapist will examine the skin using
visual cues, under magnifcation and
her fngertips, while asking questions
about your lifestyle and product rou-
tine,” explains Annet King, director
of Global Education for The Inter-
national Dermal Institute. “Derm-
alogica’s system for this examination
and skin coaching session is called
Face Mapping and it’s offered at no
charge, at more than 7,000 locations
across the U.S.A., with no obligation
to purchase products.”
n Cleanse with tepid water and
a creamy liquid cleanser. Skip hot
water and antibacterial soaps as they
can damage skin.
nBe aware that petroleum-based
products may exacerbate dryness
and don’t let skin “breathe.”
n While aggressive scrubs can
cause microlacerations to the skin,
resulting in more water loss, micro-
fne powder exfoliants are safe for
even sensitive skin, gently loosening
and lifting dulling cell debris from
the surface without causing irrita-
tion. After cleansing and microfoliat-
ing, blot and pat skin to dry—don’t
rub.
nArtifcial fragrances, especially
in high-foaming bath and shower
products and “perfume-y” body lo-
tions, are drying and possibly sensi-
tizing to the skin.
n Hydrate in layers. Hyaluronic
acid in serum form draws airborne
moisture to the skin. Use it to layer
beneath moisturizers to prevent
dehydration. After bathing, apply
body lotion to warm, damp, freshly
cleansed skin. Add a few pumps of an
aromatherapy massage oil to make
your body lotion extra soothing and
comforting.
n Nourish and protect with bo-
tanicals. Bioactive moisturizing in-
gredients, shea butter, cocoa seed
butter, avocado oil and vitamin E
deliver soothing and hydrating lipids
and hydrators to skin, even in rugged
conditions.
HELP: A professional skin therapist provides a client with a complimen-
tary Face Mapping skin analysis. In addition to a consultation, a skin health
regimen should include reinforcing and replenishing the weakened skin
barrier function.

Winter Itch
About this time of year a lot of people are miserable, not with the winter blues, or cabin fever, but
with Winter Itch. This is a condition of dry, itchy skin, usually with some small red bumps, sometimes little
pustules. Usually this is found on the upper arms, mid and upper back, chest and upper abdomen, and
sometime on the legs.
Most of the time, it is related to a reduction of skin moisture and skin oil. It may also be aggravated by
over heating parts of the body by heavy clothing.
The solutions are fairly simple.
Run a humidifier in your home, especially in sleeping areas. Humidity should be between 45 and 65.
There should be a little condensation on the bottoms of the window panes. Not too much; that might
ruin the window frames.
Drink adequate water (chlorine free). Most adults should have between 40-60 ounces per day. Coffee
and soda pop are not considered water. In fact, they are dehydrating and contribute to the problem.
Reduce the temperature of your bath or shower. Hot water removes some of the skin oils which are
needed to lubricate the skin. Also only soap and scrub the important areas of your body: hair, armpits,
bottom, and privates. Scrubbing the rest of the body removes much needed skin oils.
Add oil to your diet. For adults, two tablespoons of olive oil every day is helpful
(can be mixed in food) and Omega 3 (fish or flaxseed oil) 2000-4000 mg per day with
food in two or three doses are highly beneficial for skin, hair, joints, and arteries.
Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 400-800 units per day may be added with
benefit to your skin and blood vessels. Be careful not to use synthetic Vitamin E (l or
dl-alpha tocopherol) as it may add to the inflammation in your blood vessels.
Finally, in un-sunny Michigan, Vitamin D3 (2000 mg per day) is a good thing. It is not
necessarily needed to control the winter itch, but it is great for helping some other
winter health problems.
