Royal Selangor produces various types of pewter products. The product that we chose for our study is the Flint photo frame. This product is design and produced by Royal Selangor Pewter Company. There are five important process flow of making pewter based object. The process flows are the melting process, mould and casting process, filing and polishing process, hammering process and finishing process.
which is the impurities of the metal rising to the surfaces. 3. 4. small amount of copper and antimony is added thus creating new material substance. When the tin is melted. Firstly. This is a small example of the molten pewter not same as the one is larger industries. The impurities are removed from the melting pewter using an iron ladle. the first process is the melting process in which tin substance is melted with small amount of copper and antimony. 2. tin substance is put in a big pot which can withstand temperature of up to 300o C. Melted Pewter . The processes are as follow: 1. MELTINGPROCESS Since pewter is an alloy. in liquid state. The pewter emits a burning smells as it melts and dull scum gathers on the top of melted mixture. The melting pewter is maintain at a constant temperature of 250o C to avoid the pewter from harden.1.
The molten pewter is poured into the mould through the holes between the mould. . 6. Each types of mould are designed and made using technical drawing and computerized milling process. the clamp is removed and the solidified shaped pewter is taken out from the mould by hitting the mould using a steel hammer. The two sides of the mould are clamped using a clamp before molten pewter is poured. MOULD AND CASTING PROCESS The second important process is mould process. The mould is flipped upside down to make sure the molten pewter flow to each point of shaped moulds. The molten pewter is poured using metal ladle into designated steel mould. When the mould is cooled. 5. Each type of moulds has two side containing shapes desired for each part. The pewter inside is then allowed to cool and solidified. 4. 1. The pewter inside begins to cool almost instantly when it hits the mould and taking only few seconds. Molten pewter is poured into steel mould n take shape as it cool down. The mould used is steel mould that have high melting point and can withstand temperature of more than 250o C. 2. 3.2.
Some excess materials is determined on the pewter surface. The file teeth is angled by a few degrees so that the excess materials are removed from the main part on each downstroke by the file tools. 3. The file teeth is positioned on the excess parts. . Machine Filling Process The steps for filing process is as follow: 1. Chips are removed from the fiiling area. Then. Rough edges and surface defects are removed by filing. Filing is process in which unnecessary material that effect the shape of product is removed.3. FILING AND POLISHING PROCESS The shaped pewter is filed and then polished. The steps are repeated until the excess material is totally removed. Polishing is the process of creating smooth and shine surfaces by rubbing the object using rough abrasive to removed surface defects like pits. 2. the product is polished. nicks.
So the process goes round and round until a satisfied product is obtained. 3. the hammering process in which special type of hammers hitting a point on the product a little bit to create a dent. The polishing is done until there are no surface defects in the product. If the desired shaped is not obtained or the wrong dent is obtained. 4. Hammer is used to make style dented of the product surface. and scratches. The dents will add an extra hand-made finishing to the product. The frame is hammered at each point of frame to make dents in each point of the product. 2. Step 1 is repeated until a satisfactory result is obtained.lines. In this case. . HAMMERING PROCESS The last process before finishing is hammering process. The hammering process is as follows: 1. The product is polished using fine-grade sandpaper. the product will be melted back.
The surface of product is milled. During this process additional shape is also carved on the product surface. The surface of finished product is also shinier than unfinished product. . FINISHING PROCESS After completed all the process the product then finished using milling machine. The difference in weight can be told.5.
