Gregory, Laflamme 93 Horowitz, Maeda 01 Reall, Choptuik et al

r z

s-wave

1. Universal instability of black objects (string, brane, ring, warped string…) 2. Get strong in high-d 3. Nobody knows endpoint

BH M/Ld-3

M/Ld-3

1. 2nd order trans. from Uniform String to Non-Uniform String above dcr 2. Stability of NUS changes at around dcr 3. dcr depends on ensemble, charge, and momentum

Conclusion
• Fluid/Solid analogue can be a useful guiding tool to learn about high-D BHs
– Linear (in-)stability – Bifurcation structures in non-linear regime – Dynamical evolution of instability

• The similarities b/w Fluid & BH seems to go beyond analogy w/ < Λ
Navier-Stokes Eq. + appropriate EOS  Finite energy BHs in AdS

Future prospects
• Stability of Non-Uniform Tubes… (w/ R.Emparan) • Final fate of RP instability in AdS-Fluid context
– Self-similar pinching (a la Eggers, in progress)

• Final fate of GL instability: Numerical GR?
(SACRA N-D: new code by M. Shibata, H. Yoshino…)

• Restricting BH topologies…
