Te Lifes A Beach Mid-Winter Potluck
Ready to celebrate winter in all its glory by forgetting
that its there for one night? Feeling an urge to throw on a
brightly-coloured Hawaiian shirt and whip out the shades
and sunscreen? Well, the originators of the local 100 mile
potluck are planning to bring back summer (briefy) and
want you to be part of it. On Saturday, January 28, the Val-
lican Whole Community Centre will be hosting the Lifes
a Beach Mid-Winter Potluck. Te doors open at 5 pm with
dinner at 6 pm.
Itll be an evening where those who show up create the
menu, because the price of admission is a dish for the pot-
luck (hopefully containing some local ingredients).
Tere have been some magical 100 mile potlucks at
the Whole which seem to bring out the best from area
gardens, farmers and chefs. A highlight of the night will
be one of those unique Vallican Whole Silent Auctions.

The West Kootenay District of the Ministry of
Transportation and Infrastructure is now
completing Hired Equipment lists for the
upcoming fscal year.
All individuals or companies who are currently
registered through the ministrys of ces
in Nelson or Grand Forks will be receiving
invitations to re-register their equipment by
mail by the end of February.
Individuals or companies who were not
registered in 2011, but who wish to have
their equipment listed, are invited to visit the
Nelson or Grand Forks of ce to obtain the
appropriate registration forms.
You will be required to have Commercial
(Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance
with minimum $2 million third party liability,
and a WorkSafe BC clearance letter prior to
starting work on any ministry projects. Dump
trucks must provide a current weigh slip, front
tire size, and manufacturers front axle rating.
Equipment can only be registered in one
area in any given year, and must be owned
or leased-to-own in order to be eligible for
registration. Seniority is not transferable from
area to area.
The deadline for new registrations for the
2012/2013 fscal year is March 20, 2012.
Late registrations will be accepted, but may
appear at the bottom of the open list. Note
that there is no charge for registering new
equipment or for changing or deleting

CBAL Community Literacy Award
Eva Kelemen of the Kaslo and District Public Library
was presented with the 2011 Community Literacy Award
on December 18. Barb Szuta of the Columbia Basin Alli-
ance for Literacy (Kaslo/Balfour) made the presentation.
Eva was recognized for her outstanding commitment to
literacy and library services in the Kaslo region.
Eva began working for the library in 2005, in 2008 she
took over as temporary Library Director and in 2010 she
became permanent Library Director. During this time,
Eva has been a strong advocate for improving the servi-
ces and programs at the library. She has worked with the
Village of Kaslo and RDCK Area D to secure more stable
funding and to ensure that this funding is on par with
other libraries in the West Kootenay. She has donated
her time to apply for grants, has increased the number of
hours that the library is open and once she even declined
a pay raise in order to maintain the librarys book budget.
Eva has helped the library keep pace with the many chan-
ges the library has faced in the last fve years and she was
instrumental in linking the Kaslo Library to 55 libraries
throughout British Columbia.
In 2011, the library received the unusual request to
temporarily relocate their entire collection and services
for nine months. Tis was an enormous undertaking and
it meant that the library was actually required to move
twice. Under Evas guidance, this was successfully accom-
plished and it was her excellent organizational and com-
munication skills that ensured that the librarys services
were only minimally disrupted during these major moves.

Support Walk For Memories
Survey results revealed by the Alzheimer Society of
Canada show a treatment gap has emerged for Canadians
living with Alzheimers disease and other dementias. Low
rates of awareness for the early signs of dementia prevent
many people from seeking a diagnosis early in the stages
of the disease because they thought their symptoms were
simply old age.
Early detection and diagnosis is critical to maximizing
quality of life. It allows people to:
Plan ahead and make key decisions about their future
medical, fnancial and legal needs.
Understand their symptoms.
Ensure access to proper support, care and treatment.
Acquire education and information resources.
Develop support networks.
Support the Alzheimer Society of BC Investors Group
Walk for Memories on Sunday, January 29 inside the Nel-
son Community Complex from 1 pm to 3 pm. Register,
pledge or create a virtual walk at www.walkformem-
ories.com. Funds raised will be used for local support and
education programs as well as research.

buf, or musical bum, Ski Bum: Te Musical is a fast-paced,
shredding good time for the whole family. Te Langham
Cultural Centre is proud to present Iron Mountain Te-
aters (IMT) smash hit: Ski Bum: Te Musical on Friday,
February 10 at JV Humphries School in Kaslo. Te show
and laughs begin at 7:30 pm.
I.M.T. is the Kootenays hottest professional theatre
company. Ski Bum: Te Musical tells the story of one ski
bum nearly cresting over the hill, with all of his youthful
energy intact...and thats the problem. Jef Snowden needs
to grow up a little, and act more responsibly if he wants
things to go his way in adulthood. When an old fame at
Big Snow Peak sparks a renewed interest in Jefs heart,
he starts to consider the benefts of gaining a level of ma-
turity. With the help of cultural anthropologist, played by
new cast member Grant Waters, studying the culture and
practices of ski-bummery, and a sometimes-not-so-nice
head of ski patrol, he begins to see that he doesnt have
to give up skiing and having fun in order to evolve. Ski
Bum is jammed packed with hummable tunes that span
a wide range of genres, jokes that run the gamut of hu-
mour from slapstick to high comedy, and eleven inspired
musical performances. Te innuendo alone is enough to
tickle even the most chafed of funny-bones.
So come on out you ski bums, snow bums, skinny bums,
