2011 Report to Customers
JANUARY 2012

2011: The Year UIL Grew Together
Many customers will remember 2011 for its volatile weather and economic uncertainty. Those challenges tested us at UIL Holdings Corporation as well, but we’ll also remember 2011 as the year we truly grew together as a corporation. On Nov. 16 we celebrated one year since UIL completed the transaction to acquire The Southern Connecticut Gas Company, Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation and Berkshire Gas Company. Along with The United Illuminating Company, our utilities have made strides toward adopting common networks, platforms and solutions so that we can easily share information and provide our customers with enhanced service. UIL is now a larger, more diversified company serving more than 700,000 customers in two New England states.

UIL marked another milestone on Dec. 6, when our executives and directors presided over the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate 40 years of being listed on the world’s largest stock exchange. The name “UIL” comes from the corporation’s NYSE ticker symbol. In 2011 we also reached out to our customers through a series of 10 community meetings held in locations convenient to customers throughout our companies’ service territories. As we enter 2012 and continue to grow and mature as a corporation, we look forward to working with you, our customers, as we together meet the challenges and opportunities in the year ahead.

Heavy Weather

In 2011 Connecticut faced some of its greatest weather challenges in decades. On Aug. 28, Tropical Storm Irene brought soaking rains, lashing winds and surging tides that swept away houses, uprooted trees and swamped substations. Nearly half of UI’s customers lost power, along with many thousands across the state. Barely two months later, a freak October snowstorm dumped heavy, wet snow on trees that hadn’t yet shed their leaves, bringing poles and transformers crashing down — and leaving much of Connecticut in the dark. In both events, we brought to bear the weight of the entire UIL Holdings Corporation on UI’s restoration efforts, marshalling resources from all of the UIL companies to safely restore service while continuing regular operations. In all, UI restored service to more than 210,000 of our customers after Irene and another 52,000 after the Oct. 29 snowstorm, then went on to assist with restoration elsewhere in the state and region.

UI won praise for “good situational awareness” in a state-ordered independent review of the October event, and is implementing lessons learned during the course of the storms. We have announced plans to invest $10 to $15 million in technology to improve storm communications to enhance performance in future events. We are proud of the work of our employees, as well as the patience and resiliency of our customers.

Safety First
Nothing should be left to chance when you’re dealing with live electricity and natural gas fuel. That’s why safety is our No. 1 priority at UIL. Our safety-first perspective begins as soon as employees join the team, and it continues throughout their careers. It’s a value that pervades UIL at every level, extending to our customers through outreach and education. Our focus on safety was put to the test in 2011. The year started with a total of more than 5 feet of snow and ice, limiting access to electric and natural gas equipment and making driving hazardous. Later, we faced an earthquake, tropical weather and yet more snow. On each occasion, our employees worked safely — and it wasn’t by chance. UIL’s technical trainers and safety group spent countless hours developing and implementing safety training for employees, contractors and municipal emergency responders. For example, in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, the Safety Department trained more than 1,100 employees from the electric and natural gas operating companies, as well as contractors, so they could safely participate in UI’s restoration effort. Whatever 2012 brings, UIL and its employees stand ready to respond promptly and safely.

Philanthropy
Our corporation and our employees give back to the communities and people we serve through a variety of activities. From 2007 through 2011, UIL, its companies and its employees have contributed nearly $17 million toward a variety of community and philanthropic causes — including arts and leisure, economic development, education, environment and more. During those five years the corporation purchased more than $11 million in tax credits to support housing and neighborhoods. Employees expressed their commitment to their communities through a variety of means, including the annual Employee Giving Campaign, volunteerism and a variety of drives and fund-raisers for specific needs, such as the March 11 Japanese tsunami.

Why Natural Gas?
There’s never been a better time to switch to natural gas heat. In 2011, the cost of heating with natural gas hovered around half the cost to heat with oil. Customers responded: Both SCG and CNG reported record conversions from oil to gas. You, too, can switch now and enjoy the savings and convenience of environmentally friendly natural gas heat. n Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel, which means lower greenhouse gas emissions. n Natural gas is dependable and always there when you need it — delivered safely and reliably to your home. n With today’s high-efficiency gas appliances, you’re helping to conserve our natural resources. n More than 98 percent of our natural gas is produced in North America. In 2011 we continued to expand natural gas coverage to neighborhoods not previously served and rolled out a new advertisement stressing the advantages of natural gas. Strong natural gas supplies from both conventional reserves and emerging sources such as shale gas are expected to keep natural gas prices stable during 2012. To learn about converting your home to natural gas heat, call 866-427-2888 (866-GAS-2888).

Saving Money, Protecting the Environment
Our utilities have long been leaders in offering programs to help customers save money and reduce their impact on the environment. UI, SCG and CNG work in partnership with the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund to offer Home Energy Solutions, which helps customers to reduce energy bills with in-home assessments of energy-saving opportunities and the installation of energy saving products and services. The program reached full participation in 2011, with about 3,500 customers making their homes more energy efficient. On average, customers save about $200, regardless of the heating fuel they use. There’s also an income-eligible version of the program for those that qualify. To sign up, call 877-947-3873 (877-WISE USE).
