1200-1500 Words

Design Brief. Design a sound system for this medium sized concert hall. The hall has a floor plan of 20m x 30m including a stage that is 10m deep. It offers room for either 725 seats or 1500 standing. A flexible ceiling allows the total height to be variable from 13m to 20m, changing the total volume from 7700 m3 (lowest) to 11500 m3 (highest). In this way the T30 reverb time can be varied from 1.2 to 2.2 seconds accommodating different styles of music. The average background noise is smaller than 30dBspl(A). The sound system design will be limited to a FOH main system (no monitors or additional systems). The system will be a mix of line array and conventional loudspeakers that can be configured as required for different styles and preferred acoustics. The system will comprise of no more than (a total of) 24 Brandx “Powerx” line arrays modules, no more than 6 Brandx “Enforcer” Q1’s and no more than 4 Brandx “Boom” sub woofers. The Brandx range has comparable specifications to Meyer sound’s M2d line array, CQ-1 full range and 650P subwoofer (this will allow you to use MAPP online to support your design. For the rear wall choose ‘acoustic tiles’ and for the floor choose ‘Carpet heavy on concrete’. Don’t just copy and paste spec sheets from the Internet, only describe the relevant specs!) 1) Demonstrate (include a drawing), using for one speaker using 1 omni microphone and one omni-directional loudspeaker: a. PAG b. That this system can achieve NAD at the most distant seat with: EAD =3m; distance to microphone =0.3m; distant seat is 20m. (d1 and d2 as specified in the design). The sound system design will specify three different configurations: 2) Pop Music: (T30= 1.2s) 105 dBspl(A) at a mixing desk position no more than 5 meters from the rear wall. Even full range coverage (for standing audience) is the foremost requirement. Main functionalities are extension of the dynamic range, even distribution of content to all people in the audience and improving the acoustic balance. 3) Electro acoustic music (T30= 1.8s) 98 dBspl (A) at a mixing desk position no more than 5 meters from the rear wall. Even full range coverage is the foremost requirement. A stacked system that can be close to the acoustic source is preferred over a flown system. In addition this system can be used to create spatial sound effects. Main functionalities are improving the acoustic balance, balancing electronic (e.g. computer playback) and acoustic (e.g. traditional musical instruments and vocals) sources. 4) Classical concert with enhanced vocal or speech. (T30= 2.2s). Even full range coverage is the foremost requirement. The system can be used for announcements or introductions to orchestral or other acoustic performances. Main functionalities is to improve intelligibility and clarity of speech.
