the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.

Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall

not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein

The ordinances of baptism and the Lord's supper are two monumental pillars, one within and

one without the church. Upon these ordinances Christ has inscribed the name of the true God

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the

disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to

them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for

the remission of sins

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's

feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto

you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.The

object of this service is to call to mind the humility of our Lord, and the lessons He has given in

washing the feet of His disciples. There is in man a disposition to esteem himself more highly than his

brother, to work for himself, to serve himself, to seek the highest place; and often evil-surmisings and

bitterness of spirit spring up over mere trifles. This ordinance preceding the Lord's Supper is to clear

away these misunderstandings, to bring man out of his selfishness, down from his stilts of self-

exaltation, to the humility of spirit that will lead him to wash his brother's feet.

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he

that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the

Lord's body.Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him

guiltless that taketh his name in vain.Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my

thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me...

The communion service points to Christ's second coming. It was designed to keep this hope

vivid in the minds of the disciples.

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like

figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but

the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And

Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all

righteousness. Then he suffered him.

When Christ bowed on the banks of Jordan after his baptism, and offered up prayer in behalf of

humanity, the heavens were opened, and the Spirit of God, like a dove of burnished gold, encircled the

form of the Saviour, and a voice came from Heaven which said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am

well pleased. There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of these three great

powers--the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit--those who receive Christ by living faith are baptized,

and these powers will co-operate with the obedient subjects of heaven in their efforts to live the new

life in Christ.

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are

accustomed to do evil.A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will

take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit

within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not

baptized of him. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said

unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? And said to the

mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from

the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?Verily,

verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the

kingdom of God.

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water:Therefore we are buried

with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. What we need is

the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Without this, we are no more fitted to go forth to the world than were the

disciples after the crucifixion of their Lord.
