urse.Rather,theaimofthiscourseistobetterunderstandhowfirmscanusetheir humanresourcemanagementpracticestoenhanceindividualandorganizationalperformance.Tothatend,wewill examinetheemergingtheoreticalperspectivesinstrategichumanresourcemanagement(SHRM),thecontextualfactors thatinfluencethelinkagesbetweenafirmshumanresourcesandhumanresourcepracticeswithfirmperformance, intellectualcapital,andthegrowingcomplexityoftheemploymentrelationshipbetweenorganizationsandemployees. Grading Participation(15%):Aswithmostdoctoralseminars,thequalityofthecourseisdirectlyrelatedtothequalityofclass discussion.Consequently,classparticipationwillbegradedoneachstudentsdegreeofqualitycontributiontowardclass discussions.Toensureaninformeddiscussion,studentsareexpectedtocometoclasspreparedtodiscuss(notsimply summarize)eacharticle.Eachweektherewillbeaspecifiedlistofrequiredreadings(therequiredreadingsaremarked witha*inthereadingslist).Alistofsuggested/additionalreadingsisprovidedeachweekforthosestudentsinterested inpursuingatopicinmoredetail.Studentsareencouraged,althoughnotrequired,toreadbeyondtheassignedreadings andtobringtotheclasssattentionresearchthatinformsandexploresthedaysissues.Inpreparingforclassdiscussion, youmaywanttoaskyourselfsomeofthefollowingquestions: Whatisinterestingaboutthisarticle? Whataretheinterestingresearchquestionsinthisareaofresearch? Whatarethestrengthsandweaknessesoftheconceptualargumentsandassumptionsofthisarticle? Whatarethestrengthsandweaknessesofthemethodologicalapproachusedtotesttheresearchquestionsin thisarticle? Howdoesthisarticlefitinwithotherarticlesonthetopic? Ifyouweredoingresearchinthesamecontentareaasthearticle,whatwouldyoudonextordifferently? WhatdoesthisarticlehavetodowithSHRMresearch? Inaddition,foreachclasssessionadiscussionleader/classfacilitatorwillbeassignedtohelpclarifykeyconcepts,identify controversialorinterestingissues,pointoutadditionalarticlesofparticularrelevance,andsoon.Thoughallstudentsare stronglyencouragedtocometoclasswithquestionsandissuestodiscuss,itistheroleofthefacilitatortoprepare2or3 criticalquestionsperarticlefordiscussion.However,itisNOTtheroleofthefacilitatortoleadtheentirediscussionall studentsareexpectedtoparticipateequally.Wewilldeterminewhowillbethefacilitatorsforeachclassduringthefirst classsession.Dependingonclasssize,studentswillbeexpectedtolead23classsessions. ArticleCritiques(15%3critiqueseachworth5%):Tofacilitatelearningandscholarship,eachstudentwillconduct3 (three)criticalevaluationsofarticlesthatwereadforclass.These3pagecritiqueswillbebasedonyourassessmentof thetheoreticalandmethodologicalqualityofanarticlethatisassignedforclassreading.Thearticlesthatyouchoosewill beuptoyou.Theonlyrequirementisthatyoumaynotsubmitcritiquesinsuccessiveweeks.Itisimportantthatyou 1

receivemyfeedbackoneachofyourcritiquespriortosubmittinganotherone.Thesecritiqueswillbecollectedatthe endoftheclassperiodforwhichyouhavechosentoreviewanarticle.Ingeneral,thesecritiquesshouldnotbe summariesorarehashofeacharticle(weallhavereadthearticlesalready);insteadagoodcritiqueidentifiesthe strengthsandweaknessesofanarticleintermsofitscontributiontotheliteratureandidentifiesfutureresearchneeds andopportunities. Examination(35%):Therewillbeoneexaminationattheendofthecourseduringthelastscheduledclassperiodthatwill emphasizethethemes,trends,issues,andthelikethatarehighlightedthroughoutthereadingsandclassdiscussions. Therewillbetwoorthreequestionstobeansweredoverathreehourperiod.Answerswillbegradedon:(a)qualityof insightbroughttothequestion;(b)incorporationofrelevanttheoryandresearch;and(c)integrationacrosstopicareas. ResearchPaper(35%):Eachstudentwillinvestigateatopicofhis/herchoiceinSHRMandwriteahighqualityresearch paperthatintegratespastresearchandtheorywithnewideasaboutanissue.Originality,thoroughness,andscholarly thinkingarethemostimportantcriteriafortheresearchpaper.Thesepapersmayinvolvedataanalysisoraconceptual contributiontothefieldofSHRM.Whateverthenatureoftheresearchpaper,itmustbeoftopnotchquality;thisisan opportunitytodevelopapaperthatisofpublishablequality.Allpapersshouldbewritteninaformatandstructure suitableforsubmissiontothetopmanagementjournals(AcademyofManagementReview,AcademyofManagement Journal,AdministrativeScienceQuarterly,JournalofManagement,JournalofAppliedPsychology,PersonnelPsychology, StrategicManagementJournaletc.)andshouldnotexceed30pages.Presentationswillbemadebyeachstudentduring thesecondtolastclassperiod(December7)andwillfollowtheformatoftheacademyofmanagementmeetings conference.Thedeadlinesfortheresearchpaperarelistedbelow. I. ResearchProposals:A35pageresearchproposalisduebyweek5(October3).Asidefrommyfeedbackon theseproposals,eachproposalwillalsobedistributedtoanotherstudentinthecourseforreviewandcritique. Toensurethateveryonehastimetoconsiderandintegratethisfeedbackintothepapers,thefeedbackmustbe returnedtome(viaemail)nolaterthanOctober9.Iwillprovideyouwithmyfeedbackandthefeedbackfrom thestudentreviewerinclassonOctober12.
